Windows Server Backup (2008R2) deleted ALL previous copies when backup disk (1TB) was full

Hi all,

As the title says, 2 days ago my Windows Server Backup erased ALL of my previous backups when the disk was full. I was under the impression it was supposed to only delete the oldest backups first to make room for more copies. I have attempted to recover backups from before 2 days ago, but there is nothing available for dates older than 30 November 2016.

On the 7th September 2016 I had the following backups:  221 copies available  Oldest available: 25 February 2016.Capacity: 931.49 GB Total used space: 928.71    Space used by backup items: 300.04 Gb, Space used by backup copies: 628.67 Gb

Today I have the following:  2 copies available   Oldest available: 30 November 2016. Capacity: 931.49 GB Total used space: 309.65  Space used by backup items: 303.44 Gb, Space used by backup copies: 6.22 GB

Can someone please explain why this would occur, and if there's any options that I can select/un-select so that in future, when my backup disk is full, Windows Server Backup doesn't automatically erase ALL of my backups again?

Also, is there any way I can get these backups back?

Regards,

Michael

Hi,

Using Windows 2012 R2 Server.

Trying to create a backup of everything, which comes up to <1TB. However whenever I try to do the backup I receive this error "Volumes larger than 16777216 megabytes cannot be protected." The volume is 6TB in size but there is less than 1TB of data there...

Any way to get around this issue?

Thanks

Hi,

Since some time now i have not been able to use the Windows server backup tool anymore.

I cant really tell since when this started, but for all i know the windows server backup service worked fine.

I even created a backup schedule and it made some backups.

I am running this windows server 2012 Standard at home with just a couple of basic applications.

The server is used to host several websites with IIS, it manages my local DHCP and is used for locally shared storage.

There are no other security applications installed yet, because i am trieing to get rid of this error first. (so no symantec or whatever)

Since some time i am having trouble opening the windows backup snap-in.

When ever i trie to open the Windows server backup snap-in i get the following error:

A fatal error occurred during a Windows Server Backup snap-in (Wbadmin.msc) operation.

Error details: The Windows Server Backup service has stopped.

Close Wbadmin.msc and then restart it.

Whenever this error occures the folowing error is show in the windows logbook:

I tried to find simmilar cases over the internet but i cant seem to find a solution for the problem.

I already tried to remove and reinstall the Windows server backup feature, this did not help.

Is there anyone here that can help me find a solution for this problem ?

Thank you !

best way to backup a sbs 2011 (Active directory users) with exchange and 1tb files on it

hey, what do you propose to use to backup the above scenario.
time window would be around from 08:00 in the evening to 5:00 in the morning.

would it be good to use the internal windows Backup software and RDX Tapes - usb 3.0. Or is my time window to small?

a full backup would be best. so would could in recovery situations (fire, theft) restore the whole System.

"Windows Backup cannot read the backup destination" when trying to backup to Backup Once to Samba share on NAS

$

Environment:

Windows Server 2012 R2 Essentials running in VirtualBox in a Windows 7 host. Networking is configured and works fine.

Background:

My only backup needs are to copy the contents of two folders to a NAS folder every day at 2 AM.

I configured a backup schedule in Windows Server Backup (wbadmin) to a network location which is hosted as a Samba share on a Synology NAS.

For authentication, I created a backup user which has the same username and password as a user on the Samba share, with permission to read and write the backup folder. I added this user to the Backup Operators group.

Problem:

When I try to run the Backup Once operation to test my backup, I get the following error message:

"Windows Backup cannot read the backup destination."

What I've tried:

I verified that the location is directly accessible in Windows by copying and pasting the address from the Windows Server Backup destination into explorer. Providing the backup user credentials opened the location and creating/reading files worked fine.

Adding the backup user to the Administrators group did not have an effect.

Update 2014-02-18

I checked the backup destination and was surprised to find that the scheduled backup actually completes successfully.However, Backup Once always results in the above error message. So the problem is confined to the "Backup Once" operation.

Hello,

I have a 2 virtual Windows servers (one SBS2011 and one 2008) that I would like to backup on two Qnap NAS. (one is located in the room than the servers and teh other one is in another building)

I have created and setup two iScsi targets on each NAS and mounted them on both servers (each servers has now a disk mounted on each NAS)

I then configured Windows server backup with multiple target and I was hoping the backup will rotate from one backup disk to the other.

The backup run fine, but it always goes to the same disk.

Is there  way to configure windows server backup so that he use both target disk?

Thanks in advance for your help,

Bare Metal Restore from HPE server to Cisco UCS blade

$

I'm using CommVault Simpana's 1-touch bare metal restore software to restore from a backup of a physical HPE ProLiant DL580 G7 with Microsoft Server 2008 R2, to a Cisco UCS B200 M4 blade.

I've done many bare metal restores with CommVault in the past, mostly on Dell servers, and either restoring to other Dell servers or into VMware.

The HPE server has a boot LUN on an HP EVA SAN.  The Cisco UCS blade also has its LUN on the HP EVA.

During the restore I choose the correct Network and Storage drivers and it completes successfully.  When I boot up the server after restore I get one of two things:

If I try to do a Startup Repair:

Windows Boot Manager screen, Status: 0xc000000e, Info: The boot selection failed because a required device is inaccessible.

If I try to boot into Windows:

I get a BSOD, with STOP error of 0x0000007B.

I've booted into a Windows 2008 R2 ISO, and then I have to click on the Load Drivers button and select the correct driver for it to see the OS.  I choose the OS and go into my Recovery Options.

I've tried running a chkdsk.  I've tried numerous Windows repair utilities, such as bootrec/fixboot, bootrec/fixmbr, bootrec/rebuildbcd, etc, and now of it works.

I try to boot into safe mode, and it gets as far as loading \windows\system32\drivers\bfad_up.sys.

I've read some forums that talk about loading the hive from regedit, while booted into the Windows ISO, and modifying certain settings if you're going from one type of server to another, but none that mention going from HPE to Cisco UCS.

Bugcheck Code C2 - BAD_POOL_CALLER

Hi Team,

I'm having this issue on Windows 2008 R2 Ent, server was unexpected reboot with Bugcheck C2. Below are the kernel dump logs from Winbdg.

Can anyone confirm whether below logs related to Ntfs.sys or HP Smart Array driver?

Based on the dump bugcheck code and call stack, found that BAD_POOL_CALLER. That indicate the current thread is making a bad pool request.  Typically this is at a bad IRQL level or double freeing the same allocation.

Arguments:

Arg1: 000000000000000b, type of pool violation the caller is guilty of.
Arg2: fffff88008442840
Arg3: 00000000084429a8
Arg4: fffff88008443450

Checking the call stack during crash, found that server crashed when it was allocates pool memory of the specified type and returns a pointer to the allocated block.

I am using Windows 2008 SP2 on a server. Windows backup is scheduled to run every day, however it has been only successful for 1-2 times per week and failed in all the other days. Ran chkdsk on all backup target disks but found no problem.

The error message is "The system cannot find the file specified". Below are the details I copied from Event Viewer - Microsoft - Windows - Backup - Operational.

Hello all,

Hi,

We  have a windows 2003 SP2 Standard 32bit edition citrix server (we know product support is stopped!) having VSS error. Backups are failing. When I right click C: drive and chose "shadow copies" tab, it throws below error message. I am unable to copy paste the event log details :(

Looked for the solutions in internet but could not get proper one. Please help me fixing it.

Hyper-V VMs backup

Hi

I am backing up my two VMs as per screen below. Is this enough to restore  VMs when needed? Any risks to this strategy?

Can I restore a single VM if needed instead of both VMs at the same time?

Thanks

Regards

someone could please help fast?

we restored our Server back to hyper-v and when it boots up it stops with  0x0000007B

i think it is couse the original real Server got a LSI MegaRaid Controller.... the hyper-v not...

so i tried

    • Run Regedit.
    • Load the system hive from the VM's disk:
    • Highlight HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE
    • File > Load Hive
    • Select &lt c: &gt \Windows\System32\config\system (name it something like "asdf")
  1. Expand HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\asdf\ControlSet1\Services\intelide
  2. Change the data for value "Start" from "3" to "0".
  3. File > Unload Hive.
  4. Exit regedit.
  5. Reboot the VM.
  6. also tried Change

    Aliide = 3
    Amdide =3
    Atapi = 0
    Cmdide = 3
    iaStorV = 3
    intelide = 0
    msahci = 3
    pciide = 3
    viaide = 3

    but nothing :( only bsod
