Windows Server 2012 - Backup error - Access denied for few users.

Greeting's, I am having problem backing up few users in the AD. All users have folder redirection enabled. These few users where I am having problem have local administrator rights through GP. Earlier they were getting backed up without problems but lately only those users have - cannot access files - access denied error.

A single physical server is having AD role which has all the user data hosted too. Backup is done on an external drive. Server is fully patched and so are clients. Backup is run 4 times a day. All users get backed up correctly except these 4 users.

Any idea what can help me resolve the problem.

Thanking you in anticipation,

Parth D. Maniar

Configure a multiple local backups for two different drives and for two different dates

The ideal goal would be to have a one backup job "A" backup weekly to the drive "weekly" and a backup job "b" backup monthly to the drive "monthly." However windows server backup does not give me an option to create a second backup job. How would I go about getting this done?

Many thanks in advance.

Error message "The user name being used for accessing the remote share folder is not recognized by the local computer".

Dear All,

I am trying to setup Windows Volume Backup on a Server 2012 R2 to backup to a network share.

On the other side where I have the network share is also running windows server 2012 R2.

When i run the wizard to setup the schedule backup I get the error message "The user name being used for accessing the remote share folder is not recognized by the local computer".

Both the servers are not a member of the Domain and nor a DC and they are available as VM's. The host machine is also not a member of a Domain neither a DC.

Kindly let me know any solution to this issue.

Regards,

Ahmed.

Do Not Trust WSB Logs/Events: VHDX File restores as zero size from Windows Server Backup

$

On Windows 2012 Server Host Machine:

I had occasion to restore a 118 GB VHDX from backup. However, although it shows in the WSB Recovery Wizard, and neither the Event Logs or the Windows Backup Log Files show any errors, the file restores as zero size. I tried from several previous days' WSB backups as well.

The file is a *.VHDX that is mounted and shared for all machines on my network. It is not attached to a virtual machine.

WSB is set up to backup the Hard Drive letter of the partition the VHDX is stored in (along with a few other files).

When I recover that partition from WSB, the other files restore fine, but the VHDX is restored as size=0. All the VMs (on other partitions) seem to restore OK.

I also had an external Wbadmin backup where I backed up that VHDX file explicitly instead of using the drive letter, and it restored fine.

If I have to backup VHDX files explicitly, then fine. But WSB should not list a file as backed up successfully and available for restore if it cannot, in fact, be restored. I have to wonder if there are any other files that will not restore either. Also, the log files (C:\Windows\Logs\WindowsServerBackup\Backup-dd-mm-yyyy_hh-hh-ss.log) should have reported this problem, rather than record success as "Backup of volume T: succeeded."

The only thing I can think of at this point, is that perhaps it remained locked by a network machine somehow. Even still, WSB should have backed it up in a crash consistent state, or at least give a warning or error.

I review my backup logs and events regularly and there was nothing to indicate any issue at the time of backup. Obviously, WSB is not capable of reliably reporting success and failure, and cannot be trusted.

Can anyone shed any light on this?

Thanks,

Bob.

I have a new Dell R710 that I have 2008 Server R2 64-bit installed. It's role is file server. I first noticed there were VSS initialization issues in BackupExec and that the system state wasn't getting backed up.

Then I would run "vssadmin list writers" from CMD and system writer would be timing out....

Also event ID 22 for volsnap The shadow copy storage volume specified for shadow copies on volume\\?\Volume{caaccaea-2a96-11e1-b14b-806e6f6e6963} could not be added.

How to restore NTBackup's BKF file on Windows 2008 R2?

Hi,

I would like to find some procedure how to restore files from BKF file on Windows 2008 R2.
NTBackup has been replaced in Windows 2008 by Server backup tool, but there was an option to restore BKF files using NTBackup restore utility. This tools unfortunately requires removable storage component, which is no longer available in Windows 2008 R2. So my question is: How to handle with BKF files in Windows 2008 R2 server?

Purging old backups

I am running Windows Server 2012 R2 ... have been running daily backups of my C drive, backing up to my D drive.  All is good there, but the D drive is starting to fill up.  I installed this server in mid December 2014, so I essentially have about 3 months of daily backups as of 3/20/2015.  My 2 questions are:  What will happen when the D drive fills up?  Will it automatically purge the oldest backup and then complete successfully?  Secondly, how can I purge manually the old backups?

Thanks for your help.

Windows 7 Backup contents/inventory

Many years ago I configured Window Backup to do incremental backups.  But it would regularly start new full backups on me.  This has led to a lot of duplicate backups of files that have not changed.  Since most of what I'm backing up is pictures and digital home videos, disk space has become an issue.  I would like to delete backups that contain files that have already been backed up.  But I can't figure out a way of easily listing the contents in each back up set.

I even tried restoring a few of them and  then using a diff tool, but this too is problematic in that when I restore to an alternate location, it doesn't just write the files from the selected backup set.  Instead it appears to combine  the backup set I select with previous backup sets to give me all the files that existed at that point in time.

Is there any way list or, ideally, extract the files out of the WBCAT files?

wbadmin - access to EFI system partition fails

Sorry, but I could not change the headline in the thread were I started this issue. But error 0x807800C5 is too imprecise

https://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/windowsserver/en-US/79a735c1-4c50-4fa8-a945-46e25991eea9/wbadmin-failure-0x807800c5?forum=windowsbackup#47e77a02-ddb0-42dd-b33d-1475471f7bc3

So I sumarize the case:

Server 2012R2
Hypervisor with several running VM's
Up2Date 3/18/15

After weeks of succesfull backups wbadmin suddenly fails with 0x807800C5. No changes were made to the system, same backup device.

I restored a file and a VM succesfully from the backup to verify that the disk and the image is ok.

I run wbadmin from a script with:

wbadmin.exe start backup -quiet -backupTarget:f:\ -vssFull -allCritical -hyperv:vm1,vm2,vm3

Output is:

2015-03-18 23:02:17 INF > wbadmin 1.0 - Backup command-line tool
.......
2015-03-18 23:02:17 INF > The backup operation to F: is starting.

2015-03-18 23:02:17 INF > Creating a backup of volume (EFI System Partition) (100.00 MB), copied (0%).
2015-03-18 23:02:17 INF > Summary of the backup operation:

2015-03-18 23:02:17 INF > The backup operation stopped before completing.
2015-03-18 23:02:17 INF > Detailed error: The specified backup disk cannot be found.

I found out that the failure only occurs if I add the -allCritical switch.

If I start the backup for drive c: with this command:
wbadmin.exe start backup -quiet -backupTarget:f:\ -include:C: -vssFull -exclude:c:\Hyper-V

everything is ok.

I can backup every virtual machine with the following command without any problem
wbadmin.exe start backup -quiet -backupTarget:f:\ -vssFull -hyperv:XYZ-DOM

Only this command fails:
wbadmin.exe start backup -quiet -backupTarget:f:\ -vssFull -allCritical

The difference is that wbadmin now tries to backup ALL partitions, also EFI & Co. So I assume that wbadmin does not have proper access to the "EFI System Partition" and that all information which one can find in the logs of the 2012 server related to that event is bullshit (Error: The specified backup disk cannot be found).

I found reports of 8.1 users rleated to similar problems (http://answers.microsoft.com/de-de/windows/forum/windows8_1-files/systemabbildsicherung-bricht-ab/f6ed5e53-829e-48be-9b47-a73f730680cc?page=1&tm=1384095732725). Could be a hint, same kernel.

But at the end: With this kind of backup you'll loose defintly the possibility of an bare-metal restore, very
unsatisfying.

Annother question: Backups with the -hyperv switch are terrible slow. The backups are written to an USB-3 disk, The xyz-Dom machine for example has two vhdx files with roundabout 700GB, more or less 350GB filled. The backup needs 12 hours!

Thank you

2008 R2 Backups running without error, but doing FULL backups twice a week...

I have two Windows Server 2008 R2 systems which I am backing up with the native WSB utility.  Both are VMs under ESXi 5.5 on the same physical Dell R710 host.  Each has its own 2 TB USB connected device which was dedicated to and formated by and for WSB.  Both complete their respective backups without error and have been up for months.

On system A, WSB reports there are 243 copies available and examining the drive shows there is 288 GB free of the 1.81 TB total.

On system B, WSB reports there are 11 copies available and examining the drive shows there is 1.33 TB free of the 1.81 TB total.

My question is, why doesn't system B leverage a similar amount of the drive?

Thank you for any ideas!

Backup failures and execptions

Hello- I have a Dell T620 running server 2012. The backup has been setup to go to a local usb drive. The backup intermittently fails on 1 of the volumes during the compression portion of the backup or will just fail out right with an error that says "There was a failure in preparing the backup image of one of the volumes in the backup set.  We are currently running ESET for an AV. I have tried uninstalling it to see if it was causing the issue and it didn't solve it.

I did notice that there are usually event id 153 source disk The IO operation at logical block address 0x22 for Disk 4 was retried during the backup time. Not sure if that is normal or not.

Here is the error from the app log that occurs when the backup fails - The backup operation that started at '‎2015‎-‎02‎-‎13T02:00:11.159719500Z' has failed with following error code '0x807800C5' (There was a failure in preparing the backup image of one of the volumes in the backup set.). Please review the event details for a solution, and then rerun the backup operation once the issue is resolved.

If I can provide any additional details please let me know.

Windows Server 2012 R2 Backups hang and take forever to complete.

I have a Windows Server 2012 R2 VM fully updated that takes much longer to complete backups than it used to.

For example if the backup starts at 5am the backup status details(in the GUI) say it didn’t really start until 5:20am and finished at 6:21am to backup ~325MB to another backup server. In comparisons another VM setup almost identically running on the same server takes under 10 mins to do the same backup.

If I run vssadmin list writers it hangs for over 10 mins then finally returns me a list of writers with all stable and no errors.

If I make changes to the backup schedule using the GUI wizard it takes again another 20mins to “Modifying existing schedule”

I have tried the following.
1.Uninstalling the windows backup feature and reinstalling.
2.Doing all Windows updates
3.Restarting the server multiple times.
4.Tried starting in safe mode, but windows backup doesn’t run in safemode.
5.The server has no other 3rd party software on it(AV or backup for example)

I saw in another thread about registering DLLs or VSS writers but it didn’t come to that and I don’t know how.

Does anyone have any ideas on how to fix this problem?

Thanks
Chris

Throttle BMR Backup

Hi,

I'm trying to throttle network bandwidth used by WSB when creating a BMR backup. Target is an iSCSI-Volume which is mounted on a server running DPM 2010.

I tried QoS settings through GPO for wbadmin.exe and wbengine.exe with no success.

Is there a way to throttle I/O and/or network bandwidth used by WSB?

Thanks,

Tom

Recover files

Hello,

One of my clients had a Windows 2008 R2 Server and i configured it to backup the files on an external USB hard disk.

The hard disk has failed and the client wants to recover specific files from that USB hard disk before we make a full system recovery.

I connected the disk on another PC that runs Windows XP. The systems "sees" the USB hard disk, but when i double click on it it says that i dont have permissions to Access the files. Also, when i right click on it and i select PROPERTIES it says that the disk consists of 0 bytes.

Does anyone know how to extract the files from the USB hard disk without connecting it on a computer that runs Windows 2008 r2 Server.

Thank you in advance!
