I am moving (not actually migrating) from Server 2003 to Server 2012 R2. I have a Server Core install, running one VM (DS and FS) for a very small office. I need to be able to back up data as a minimum, but want to have a full VM ready to drop on different hardware if necessary (Severe lightening strike literally melted ups, surge protection, network cabling and file server last year).
I also have a twine and bailing wire IT budget. I am trying to continue using my LTO 4 drive for backup. I have an appropriate SAS HBA recognized by the Host. I love being able to take tape offsite....see lightening strike comment.
Tape doesn't seem capable of backing up a live VM. I can get data (priority) but can I still keep a relatively recent VM copy that can be dropped on new hardware quickly in a disaster? If I have NAS or DAS....how the heck do I swap drives to keep an offsite copy (Note, next to zero budget, and we are out in the wild for our site. I barely have DSL for internet access, so cloud is not likely).
When did we (collective we) start feeling good with keeping our backups at the same location as the server? Did I miss a memo someplace?
Thanks
