Compacting virtual hard disks

Hi

I have noticed it for the first time during backup. The backup came up with message 'Compacting the virtual hard disk...' (image 1 below) and in Disk Management I can see pairs of two of the disks appear (labeled as pair A and B in image 2 below).

Is this normal? I don't recall setting any virtual disks.
