Dear Windows Expert,

I have a backup server running Windows server 2012 with the Windows Server Backup installed. I would like to do a remote backup of my Hyper V Server Running Windows Server 2008 R2. Is it possible? As we know that Windows Server backup on 2008 Windows is not able to backup Hyper V, that's why I am planning to use Windows Server Backup 2012 running on the other server.

Thanks.

Backup Windows 2012 R2 HyperV cluster node problem

Hi all,

I want to configure BMR backup for one node of HyperV 2012R2 cluser.

When I select BareMetal recovery in WindowsBackup console it checks BMR, SystemState and LocalDisc C. At the end of wizard I got an error: One of source volumes specified has an invalid format and cannot be protected using Windows Backup. Only volumes formatted with NTFS/ReFS can be protected.

I tried to exclude CSV volume from Advanced Settings but still no luck.

Any suggestions will be appreciated.

Multiple 12292 and 10 errors at beginning of 3rd party backup

My server running Server 2003 R2 has been reporting multiple 12292 and 10 VSS errors when the UniTrends agent calls to the Shadow Volume Provider for a VSS Snapshot. The server has the latest updates including SP2.

Thus far I have:

  • Checked vss writers using the vssadmin list writers command : All writers were stable with no errors
  • Checked providers using the vssadmin list providers command: Only the Microsoft Software Shadow Copy Provider appears
  • Tried to access C:\ properties > Shadow Copies but the window froze. I rebooted the server and was able to access it.
  • Verified that the HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\swprv  parameter wasn't missing
  • Also reregistered the vss dlls using the following command:
  • cd /d %windir%\system32
  • net stop vss
    net stop swprv
    regsvr32 /s ole32.dll
    regsvr32 /s oleaut32.dll
    regsvr32 /s vss_ps.dll
    vssvc /register
    regsvr32 /s /i swprv.dll
    regsvr32 /s /i eventcls.dll

Backup and Restore of an AD Object in Windows Server 2008 Server

Hi, Guys.

Need your assistance on this.

Our environment plans for Office 365 Migration, as part of the task, we have to fix AD account details/attributes to meet requirements for Office 365 migration.

Basically, we have to modify some AD account attributes, and/or possible delete an AD account itself or AD accounts to meet such requirements.

In this regard, as backup purpose in case  we have to rollback the activity, revert back to original settings, how do we backup or export such AD accounts under XYZ domain. Can we backup and export a single AD account/object or do we really have to backup and/or export all of these AD accounts?

Can't we backup and/or a single AD object? If so, please advise how to do so. We'll do this activity starting tomorrow.

Appreciate your help on this. Please advise.

Thank you.

Searched around and have seen others with this issue but no real solutions.

I have a 14TB Deduplicated volume that loses its vss about once a month. I just lost this lasts night and have seen some interesting stuff.

First the error

The shadow copies of volume E: were deleted because the shadow copy storage could not grow in time.

Consider reducing the IO load on the system or choose a shadow copy storage volume that is not being shadow copied.

PS C:\Windows\system32> vssadmin list shadowstorage /for=e:

Used Shadow Copy Storage space: 507 MB (0%)

Allocated Shadow Copy Storage space: 3.14 GB (0%)

Maximum Shadow Copy Storage space: 1.40 TB (9%)

If i look at previous versions i only show the snapshot from this morning at 7:00 AM

However if i type vssadmin list shadows. it shows 30+ Contents of shadow copy set ID.

I am starting to run low on space but i still have over 20% free and over 3.1TB of space.

Any ideas here?

Hello,

I am attempting to complete a backup on a W2K8 STD server to an external USB drive. The devices are 120GB Samsung S1 Minis. I cannot complete either on-demand or scheduled backups to these devices. When I attempt a backup an error is almost immediately generated and the backup stops.

Windows Backup cannot write to the backup storage location - windows 2012 R2 host backing up hyper-v guests

$
0
0

This is the next issue that arose after the previous post I made here, which was resolved. I am not sure they're related thus a new post.

On a Windows 2012 R2 server that acts as a hyper-v host, I am using the windows server backup wizard to define a daily backup of the hyper-v guests. The destination a network location - in fact one of the hyper-v guests...is that an issue? Because when I manually invoke the backup, it reports back immediately "windows backup cannot write to the backup storage location".

The host is not in the domain. The destination dir in on a hyper v guest that is the app server in a domain. The drive which holds the destination dir is *attached* to the guest, but it is a real hard drive not a vhd.

If it's not possible to back up to a network location that is attached to the guest being backed up, I can adjust how I do this. The message doesn't provide any detail. At first I thought it was an authentication issue, but I can create a mapped drive to the guest using the same credentials.

using RDP we can connect to any desktop but we have to specify router's public IP address and then port number (Ex: xxxx.com:3396). Is that possible in case to virtual machine. Can we connect direct to virtual machine without connecting to its base machine? Can we assign port number to VM like desktop  (Ex: xxxx.com:3396)
