Windows Backup and Hyper-V

$

Hi All,

I have noticed that when creating a Microsoft Backup image that VHD files are created for each of the partitions backed up.  In a typical Microsoft installed environment that includes a system reserved partition and the OS partition.  I have been able to create a virtual machines attaching each of these VHDs.  Neither will boot because the "bootstrap" on the system reserved partition does not find the OS partition on the same drive.  Does anyone know if it is possible to combine or join these VHDs somehow to get a bootable VM.

Thanks,

Scott

Backup of volume fails in Server 2012 : Incorrect Function?

We have upgraded a customer to Server 2012 R2.  We are trying to perform a backup but every single thing we have tried has failed with the following :

Backup of volume \\?\Volume{739fbb28-4d00-11e3-80b3-806e6f6e6963}\ has failed. Incorrect function.

We are backing up the F: drive to a NAS drive attached to the network.  The setup of the network is as follows: 1 Server2012R2; 4 workstations, NAS and Watchguard firewall.  Any ideas would be greatly appreciated!

biosvalidate prompt during upgrade from 2008 r2 to 2012

I tried to upgrade from windows 2008 to 2012.

During the upgrade, it stopped on a DOS windows saying that biosvalidate.cmd could not be found.

I searched the CD for it, but did not locate it. So, I exited andsystem rebooted to the exact same place.

Why can I have but one full backup?

I have set a daily backup schedule, but Windows Server Backup only keeps one full backup. after the first backup, the next backup completes very quickly. I suppose it is doing differential backup. every time a scheduled backup completes, I only find one full backup on the folder while there is plenty of free space. PS: I am running Windows Server 2016 Preview 3

Can someone please help with this.  Thanks.  Currently my only fix has been delete the backup schedule altogether, and recreate it.  This is unacceptable as it first reformats the destination drive wiping out all previous backups.

Recent update of Windows 7 and Windows 10 broke Windows Server Essentials 2012 R2 backup?

Up until 11/13/2015, my Windows Server Essentials 2012 R2 have been successfully backup up two Windows 10 machines (Lenovo X201 and Surface Pro) and one Windows 7 machine (HP Desktop). I even recently successfully made a file restore for one of the machines. Then after the Windows Update Applied on 11/13/2015, all my backups have been failing with no error message.

"View Details" reports:

Backup did not start on this volume.

To run a backup immediately, click “Start a backup for the computer”.

Is this a wide-spread error?

Failure during server back-up: 'there was a failure while compacting the virtual hard disk on the backup location'

I back-up my WS2012 R2 Essentials to a local HDD, attached via USB to the server. worked fine until a couple of weeks aga when I sterted getting errors.

After reading up on the forum I opened compmgmt.msc and looked at the local backup tab. When chacking one of the failed backup , under 'Items' it tells me:

EFI System partition:Compacting the virtual harddisks..
C: Completed
Recovery: Completed
Bare metal Recovery:Backup failed to complete

Under 'Errors' it give the same error message for both the EFI system partition and the Bare metal recovery:

There was a failure while compacting the virtual hard disk on the backup location. Detailed error: Data error (cyclic redundancy check)

Since I'm really an amateur and the server is just a hobby, I'm unsure on how to fix this error. Hope someone can help!

Thanks,

Bert-Jan

Creating an image of windows 7 Client - Best tool to use - Back up and restore??

I need to create an image of Windows 7 Client (with desktop background, applications and settings all kept as they are) to then put onto another Windows 7 Client. Which is the best tool to use this? Will 'create a system image' in backup and restore on the windows 7 client achieve this? Will it backup the desktop background also? I plan on backing up all drives.

Thanks in advance.

Image backup of Windows Server 2008

Hello

I have a Windows Server 2008 R2 that is running some important applications. I intend to create a VM on it and work on few other things.

Before I proceed with this, I want to create an image backup of the server, so that if anything fails I should be able to get to a state without the VM but with all the applications working. I have looked into Windows backup tool but dont feel confident that it is the right thing. I may be wrong.

Is there a free tool that I could use to create an image for a Windows Server 2008?

Can you use Previous Version shadow copies with Hyper-V Cluster Shared Volumes?

$

Can you use Previous Versions on a CSV volume on a Hyper-V cluster? I want to be able to restore a recent version of a VHDX file in case it becomes corrupted, like a couple of them did last night just by running a Live Migration!, but.... I digress.

I have a Hyper-V 2012 cluster with 5 nodes, using HP 3PAR fibre channel SAN storage. I also have another HV cluster with 6 nodes running on Server 2008R2, on fibre channel HP EVA SAN - it would be nice to use Previous Versions on that, too.

Anyone know of any problems with this? Thanks!

Backup Windows Server 2012 R2, failed to detach disk

Hi all,

Currently we have a weird problem with WSB, W2012R2.

The scheduled backup process failed during night time, saying that it is failed to dismount backup image.

We notice that VSS creates "duplicate" volume during backup (vhd file), and when we check disk management console, the duplicated volume is there, not being detached. And when we tried to detach manually, it is being used by process, though we've check the VSS service is stopped, the backup is not running too. We set it offline, and then tried to detach again, still the same.

We tried to use detach vdisk command via diskpart, not successfull too. Vssadmin list writers returns no error.

We have similar backup schedule on another W2012R2 server, same updates state, but there is no problem with vhd detachment.

Please help.

Thanks.

Missing MSVCR90.dll

Hi there,

We have a Windows server 2008R2 exchange server. We would like to make regular backups to it. So we purchased HP Data Protector. We are able to deploy and install manually the Data protector agent on every server EXCEPT this one. When we try to install we get "The program can't start because MSVCR90.dll is missing from your computer. Try reinstalling the program to fix this problem".

Things i've tried already:

-sfcscan

-windows update readiness tool fix

-repair Visual c++ 2008 readistributables

-uninstall and reinstall Visual c++ 2008 redistributables

-copy/paste the MSVCR90.dll from other sources, from other servers, from local server, from the internet.

None of the above worked.

Any other ideas?

Can i recover my all active directory domain computers and users from IFM and in-cooperate them in new forest ??

My only Active Directory Server on win server 2008 R2 with one domain controller crashed today. The only backup that i had was IFM media.

So what i have done till now to recover it is a follow

I reintalled window server but this time it is winserver 2012. I added AD DS role to it. Promoted it to Domain Controller. (functionality level is 2008 R2)

On second server i installed win 2008 R2 and trying to add additional domain controller from IFM to recover all of my domain users, computers and GPO's. but i am getting this error

Could not replicate the directory partition CN=schema, CN= configuration, DC=XXX, DC=com from the remote domain

the naming context specified for this replication operation is invalid

i dont know weather my approach is correct or not

but my simple questions is

Can i recover my all domain computers and users from IFM and in-cooperate them in new forest ?? if yes how can i do that?? urgent help required.

Normal Backup Performance VS Faster Backup Performance

$

Hi,

The server I am working on currently is an HP ML110 (Tower Server), which is not a powerful one. It has 8 GB of Ram which 5 GB of it is being used by the application running on the server. Since it is an old server it only supports SATA Hard Drive and it does not have one of those warning LED lights to show whether the hard is in good condition or not. The application which is running on the server is a localized version of a sharepoint designed with Oracle. (letters and documents are scanned and being stored on this server and then send to the office workers in the network. These documents then being studied and reviewed by the mentioned office workers and then they write their comments and actions on a special tab).

Due to financial limitations I have bought an external USB hard drive as an external drive to hold my once in a day backups. My question is, by considering the weakness of my server (HDD seems to be the bottleneck sometimes) which version of backup is recommended after the initial "Full Server Normal Backup"? Shall I go on with the Normal Backup Performance or Faster Backup Performance using incremental backups?
