WHS 2011 - server backup on partition?

$

Can anyone offer some advice please?

I have a server running WHS 2011, for the past few years I have been running it with 2x2TB disks mirrored, a SSD for the operating system a 250GB for server backup and one empty bay.

Yesterday I removed the 250GB drive and fitted 2 more 2TB drives.

I had planned to partition them both 1.8/0.2 using one of the 200GB partitions as a server backup and the 1.8 mirrored for data storage.

WHS appears to want to use the whole 2TB as a server backup, which is not only a waste of space but leaves me unable to mirror my other drive.

Is it possible to use a partition as a server backup?

Do I even need a server backup, if I cloned my SSD onto the old 250GB drive every 6 months for disaster recovery would that be good enough, I was only saving the SSD in my server backup anyway as the other disks were mirrored.

Windows Backup Incremental Changes What Files

$

If I perform a full backup, using Windows Backup on a Windows 7 system, I understand that it creates a single zip of the entire backup.

But if I then perform a later backup, I understand it is an incremental backup, i.e., only the files changed or added or deleted since the full backup are affected.

But does the incremental backup affect the original zip file? Or does the incremental backup create a new zip with the changed files?

It is important that incremental backups not affect older backups, because if newer files are corrupted or hacked or maliciously encrypted, I don't want my original backup files lost.

Can't find anything in Microsoft documentation that answers this. Thanks for your time.

How to run restore from backup in safe mode?

So after last update my w2k8r2 is unable to stay afloat for so long that is required to roll back, it resets and ask me reason for shutdown afterwards. Safe mode seem stable, but does not allow me to restore the system. I found in some discussions that backup service requires shadow copy service to run, but if I try to start that service I get the very same message that it cant be run in safe mode. Seems like a bug, maybe conceptual?

I need to override this VERY FAST and do the restore in safe mode. How?

The System Writer not found in the backup

Hi,

I was trying to take the snap shot of my Windows SErver 2012.

Steps followed :

1. Installed the Windows Server Backup Feature

2. Opened the MMC and add the Backup

3. Start the Backup.

4. When I was giving the System State, I am getting an exception "System Writer is not found in the backup".

5. When I was trying to get the Physical drives, I am able to do that successfully.

Tried with many solutions given on various forums.  No luck till now for the last 3 days.  I request if anybody faced the same issue, please help.  Thanks in advance.

HI All,

Need a help from anyone who might have faced issue with system state backup using wbadmin. The issue occurs only with sysytem state ,the normal data drive gets backed up without any issues.

Details:OS: WINDOWS 2008 R2 ENT;APP: SQL SERVER 2008 R2 sp1

Issue: We have a sql server running on w2k8 r2 sp1 and have been in prod since last 3 years.Recently we started to get error while backing up system state on the server using wbadmin.Nothing is logged in wbadmin log files which are completely empty but followng events get genearted on the server duirng failure.event id 517.

event id: 517:

The backup operation that started at '‎2015‎-‎12‎-‎07T04:47:54.255915200Z' has failed with following error code '2155347997' (The operation ended before completion.). Please review the event details for a solution, and then rerun the backup operation once the issue is resolved.

Tried to restart the server multiple times ,restarted crypto services,VSS but no avail.all old shadows were cleared too.

While running wbadmin via command,it seems to be using another drive while taking system state. Not able to figure out how its taking a data drive also for sysytem state.(J:) in this case.the destination drive has enough space to accomdate system state backup and c:\ drive.

Windows Server Solutions Computer Restore Driver

$

I've seen this issue posted before with a top level description of the solution but not a list of steps to implement it.  After upgrading my Win 8.1 Pro client to Win 10 Pro attempts to restore from client backups fail.  In Device Manager the driver does indeed provide the following info:

Windows cannot initialise the device driver for this hardware. (Code 37)

An instance already exists at this altitude on the volume specified.

So how exactly do I modify the altitude for the driver to fix the problem?  N.B. I deleted the Connector Software and re-installed just in case this easy process would fix the problem but it didn't.  I too have Rapport installed just like the person who raised this issue before who stated raising the altitude fixed the problem if that is of any significance.

Where is the Windows Server Backup Drive?

Hello all,

We have a Windows Server 2012 R2 VM running on a Xenserver and it is our main Domain Controller. I just added the Windows Server Backup feature and attached a new Virtual Drive and assigned the letter B: to store the backups. After I went through the Wizard to create a schedule (I chose to do a full bare metal backup), I got the message:

This disk will no longer be visible in Windows Explorer—to prevent data from accidentally being stored on the drive and then overwritten, and to prevent accidental loss of backups.

Up to there it is all fine, but how do I make this drive visible so I can copy the backups to another computer and an off-site location. I tried to browser to the drive path like b:\Windowsserverbackup\<server name> and it did not work. Any help would be very appreciated. Thanks.

NTFS errors when try to backup server

Hi,

We use CommVault Simpana 10 to backup our vm's. The last two weeks two virtual machines can't backup anymore. I always see this error in the vSphere client:
An error occurred while taking a snapshot: msg.snapshot.error-QUIESCINGERROR.
An error occurred while saving the snapshot: msg.snapshot.error-QUIESCINGERROR.

In CommVault I see this error:
Unable to quiesce guest file system during snapshot creation

In event viewer I see this when the backup starts:

I already installed the latest updates of VMware on the server and the latest VMware tools on the vm's.
I also checked this kb article:http://kb.vmware.com/selfservice/microsites/search.do?language=en_US&cmd=displayKC&externalId=2069952

How can I fix this problem?

Volsnap error during Server Backup: Event ID: 27 - Shadow copies were aborted during detection because a critical control file could not be opened.

I have been running backups on a Windows 2012 R2 Server (Dell PowerEdge T420) for a few months with no problems.  We backup to a rotation of 3 RDX 1TB Cartridges but found out that Windows Backup does not support removable RDX media.  To get around this problem, we use BackupAssist which still uses Windows Server Backup in the background to complete the backups.

BackupAssist uses a single .vhd container file on the RDX and it is mounted asdrive G:

Again, this worked for a few months with no problems.

Then I ran Windows Update and about 30 updates were applied to the server.  Since then we cannot seem to keep multiple backups on the RDX Cartridge.  Before the Windows Updates, I was able to keep previous backups, sometimes as many as 98 copies.  We are backing up about 30GB of data each night.

Now, since the Windows Updates, I cannot get past 2 or 3 perhaps, and then lose all backup copies and end up with a completed backup, but only 1 backup copy and no previous backups.

We see in the error log the following error, which I believe is the cause of the problem.  Backups run at 8pm nightly.

I have 3 sites setup the same.  2 of the sites had all the Windows Updates applied and then started having this problem.  The above error was never seen until the Windows Updates.  The third site has not had any Windows Updates applied, and we currently have 42 previous backups on the loaded RDX Cartridge.

I have been working with BackupAssist support, but they state that it is simply Windows Server Backup that runs the back end and it is probably a Windows Server issue.  I have been fighting this for 2 months now.

Just wondering if anyone has any idea on the above error.

Thanks in advance to any that can shed some light on this problem.

Server Backup errors on Hyper-V R2

$

Hello,

I posted this issue in Hyper-V because the backup problems seems to be related to it, but did not get any feedback:

We are using a Hyper-V R2 server. There are several Servers (2008 [R2]) on the host running SQL (express), Exchange, DC, etc...
Hyper-V VSS service is registered (as described http://support.microsoft.com/kb/958662/en-us)

When we are using the built-in Windows server backup (WSB), shortly after starting, two different errors are logged several times (with different SIDs and volume IDs as shown)

Error1 (Source volsnap, Event ID 27)
"The shadow copies of volume \\?\Volume{ba882ffb-e66e-11de-8f15-001517cf3032} were aborted during detection because a critical control file could not be opened."

Error2 (Source FilterManager, Event ID 3)
"Filter Manager failed to attach to volume '\Device\HarddiskVolume126'. This volume will be unavailable for filtering until a reboot. The final status was 0xc03a001c."

These errors do not appear when I shut down the guests before starting the backup.

The backup runs and finishes without claiming any error on the host (except the logged ones). Also there are no errors on the guest machines during the time frame of the backup. However, on one VM a couple of errors occured: ("VDS Basic Provider", Event ID 1, Unexpected failure. Error code: 490@01010004) but the did not reappear after a chkdsk operation.

The volume IDs shown in the errors are NOT from local drives (I checked this) so they must be from the VHDs, but I do not know how to get the information which ID is assigned to which VHD.

I am not sure if the backups are running normal and safe due to this error, so I need help on this to solve the issues.

Thanks for any hint,
Rainer

I have seen this issue asked in several forums all without a proper resolution.

I have a Windows 2008 R2 SP1 server fully updated
Backups are failing.
Removed Windows server backup features, replaced usb drive with new drive.
formatted drive, then reinstalled Windows Server Backup Features.

Windows Image Backup - Recover - "The specified remote shared folder does not contain any backup."

$

I'm testing 2008R2 SP1 Windows Image Backups. Two Servers alpha and omega each have an older backup stored on the other server, in shared folders. In Windows Server Backup - Recovery Wizard - Specify Remote Folder I get to specify the UNC path "to the remote shared folder that contains the backup." Easy, right? I have tried (from \\alpha)

\\omega\WindowsImagebackup    (which is the shared folder)

\\omega\WindowsImagebackup\alpha

\\omega\WindowsImagebackup\alpha\Backup 2011-03-22 133034

These all error with

"The specified remote shared folder does not contain any backup. Provide the path to a remote shared folder that contains backups."

Must be corrupted? But, vice-versa, trying from \\omega and looking at \\alpha i get the same error.

Tell me I'm missing something stupid..  Thanks!

Restoring Windows 7 System Image to a smaller Disk

Hi,

I want to change a Win7 64 system on an notebook with a 250GB HHD to a new 160GB SSD.

  • Is it possible to restore a Win7 system image to a smaller drive?
  • Is it necessary to shrink the partion on the source drive before creating the image?
  • There are other parameters to consider?

I´ve just searched the internet and read this post from the sorage team blog but I can´t find a conclusive answer for that question...

thanks in advance

Anyone interested in testing a backup monitoring tool I am developing for free?

Hi Guys, I am an MSP business owner based in Melbourne Australia and was looking for a way to clearly see the status of all the backups I am responsible for managing. I couldn’t find a solution I was happy with so I created one.

The product I have developed over the last 6 months is designed for the IT manager or the MSP business owner who has more than 10 backup email notifications per day and it does three major things:

  1. You can see the status of all backup jobs from all vendors in one daily email report.
  2. You will be clearly see when a backup job didn’t send an email notification (Huge risk and has happened to me)
  3. Saves tech time checking multiple notifications and sends only failed jobs onto your ticketing system or your personal email.

Let me know if you are interested in joining the beta testing many thanks. Also yes it can monitor windows backups!

Keep size of Win7 FILE backups in check automatically?

$

I have Windows 7 Backup utility set to backup just one directory of files to another location (long story as to why, suffice it to say that's all that needs to be backed up on this machine).

How do I keep the target directory from growing infinitely huge?  I would ideally like to keep a one-week rolling window of these backups in the target/backup directory and have it automatically prune those backups that are older than a week.

I don't see where the Windows Backup tool lets you specify that option (it has some options about managing sizes in regards to IMAGE backups--but not file backups)...and I can't find any script out there that would seem to be suited to the job (I would be happy to have a Task Manager job run every night to prune backups older than a week)--whatever works!!!

Any ideas or suggestions?

Hi,
when I schedule a full backup on windows 2008 I find in the task scheduler following Action:

... wbadmin.exe start backup -templateId:{...GUID...} -quiet

I wonder what the option -templateId means. I tried on another machine and got a different GUID.
I wolud like to start the backup with a batch command and wanted to know if I have to use the -templateId option or not.

Thanks Franco

Windows Server 2012 Essentials - server backup very slow (client is quick)

The server backup is taking 12 hours for <1Tb data!

Running Essentials 2012 R2 on HP NL40 MicroServer with 8Gb RAM. The OS is on a separate drive to a storage space where the data is held. Most of the data is static and so I can't figure out why a full server backup takes 12 hours?

On WHS v.1 it took about 1 hour. I am guessing it is doing a full backup rather than incremental but I can't see how to change this.

D: is a simple partition with no RAID or redundancy.

E: is the storage space with all imprtant data which is about 750Gb

It's backing up to an external USB 2.0 drive, but previously (WHS v.1) this was very quick so it's not the backup device
