Windows Server 2012 R2 VM Back up fails with Insufficient storage available to create either the shadow copy storage file or other shadow copy data.

This problem was first encountered on an IBM x3650 in a cluster with an IBM x3550 for failover, however this problem is reproducible on a server running HyperV not part of a cluster.

When I try to run a VM based backup from inside the VM using the server backup utility to E: drive(which is an attached vhdx file). It fails with this error

Backup failed to complete. There is not enough disk space to create the volume shadow copy on the storage location. make sure that, for all volumes to be backup up, the minimum required disk space

for shadow copy creation is available. This applies to both the backup storage destination and volumes included in the backup. Minimum requirements: For Volume less than 500 megabytes, the minimum is 50 megabytes of free space. For volumes more than 500 megabytes, the minimum is 320 megabytes of free space. Recommended: At least 1 gigabyte of free disk space for each volume if the volume size is more than 1 gigabyte.

Detailed Error: Insufficient storage available to create either the shadow copy storage file or other shadow copy data.

In the event viewer I see this error

EventID: 521 The backup operation that started at '‎TIME’ has failed because the Volume Shadow Copy Service operation to create a shadow copy of the volumes being backed up failed with following error code '0x80780119'. Please review the event details for a solution, and then rerun the backup operation once the issue is resolved.

This problem was not happening in our test setup using Server 2012 R2 MSDN copy, before rolling out to production  using ourVolume license copy of server. So as a test I installed two VMs on a Host(MSDN), one VM using our MSDN copy of server and one with our  Volume license copy of server, very simple install, install Windows backup, attach VHDx file and attempt bare metal backup. The MSDN copy is able to perform the bare metal backup. TheVolume license copy fails with the above errors.

Has anyone else run into this problem? Or any ideas on where to look to see the differences between the two VMs that is stopping the backup from completing?

EDIT:

To trouble shoot and get it as simple as possible I tried a 3rd server with just hyperV installed, not part of the cluster. The VM that I install from our MSDN DVD(burned from ISO) the backups work fine. The VM I install from our Volume license copy DVD(burned ISO) fails the bare metal backup with the above

I have since verified this on two different servers, VM installed with MSDN copy of server 2012 R2 work for bare metal backups, VMs installed with purchased Volume license copies of Server 2012 R2 do not work for bare metal backups, another bit of info on the server that cant perform bare metal backups, its able to back up C: drive fine, its not until I hit bare metal back up that it fails.

I found this post which is similar to my problem I think, but when I tried his fix, and attempted to recover the VM the Windows PE System image recovery said it couldn't find a image to recover. http://superuser.com/questions/663782/windows-8-1-insufficient-storage-available-to-create-shadow-copy

Backup Jobs Consistently Fail

Hi,

I have Windows Server 2008 (not R2) running Windows Backup to an external USB HDD. The USB HDD is 50% full with 178 backup copies. Each night the backup fails one minute after start with the error.

The backup operation that started at '‎2016‎-‎06‎-‎18T03:00:40.530895400Z' has failed with following error code '0x80780179' (An error occured while writing to the backup target.). Please review the event details for a solution, and then rerun the backup operation once the issue is resolved.

The error message is as nondescript as it gets. Googling the error code comes up with nothing. Has anyone come across this before?

Thanks

Attempting to restore from a backup 2012R2 Essentials

I have a 2012R2 Essentials machine I used to replace our 2008R2 Home Server some years ago. I attempted to install an A/V and it crashed and locked everything up. (Thanks Symantec) I've tried every which way I know to restore and learned a lot about wbadmin. (as a side note, deduplication can't be read on a windows 10 machine. You must have another server with the feature turned on. Otherwise, prepare for the long wait while the drive "rehydrates" start dedupjob...I digress)

At the moment, I've copied the HDD to a vhd as to not loose the original. I've installed a fresh copy of the essentials server and I'm attempting to restore. I see 5+ copies in Windows Server Backup. I select the date and time, the two volumes I want restored and the location on the exactly sized vhd to put them. When I hit restore I get "Windows Backup cannot find a shadow copy of the backup set on the storage location."

The backup drive was new, never touched when I began using it for backups. It has sat on the server for at least a year now with no changes. When attempting to bare metal restore, the backups can't be found. Wbadmin can't find the versions until I wbadmin restore catalog -backuptarget:d: Someone please help. I stand to possibly lose a decade of family pictures and home movies without restoration. This was the backup for the backup as it has been reliable for years...

2012R2 server System writer missing in the vssadmin list writers

Hi,

I have some problem with a brand new 2012R2 standard server.

we were able to backup the server from the beginning without problems with the built-in windows backup application.

After installing Solarwinds and SQL server on it, now we have this error in the event logs if we try to backup system state:

The operation ended before completion. Detailed error: The system writer is not found in the backup.

If I check the VSSAdmin list writers, system writer is missing.

We also have this error in the event logs :

Cryptographic Services failed while processing the OnIdentity() call in the System Writer Object.

Details:

AddWin32ServiceFiles: EnumServicesStatusEx API for service enumeration failed

System Error:

The data is invalid.

.

I did not find anything on the AddWin32ServiceFiles: EnumServicesStatusEx API... and the problem for the system writer seems to start from this error.

Anyone have an idea ?

thanks

New MABS install: opening Windows server backup displays error about snapin loading

I followed the instructions for installing MABS in our local server area. We have two virtual servers, both running up to date versions of Hyper-V core. I established a new VM, 2012 R2, on our second server which is the replication target for our first server. I added a backup drive to this server so I'd have a very large intermediate backup device since I read this is the way that the MABS worked when dealing with local workloads that you will eventually send to Azure. My Azure backup vault process went smoothly, I used it during the MABS install, and the install was completed successfully. After the install I was notified of SQL 2014 updates so I used the windows updater for SP1. After that I downloaded the latest CU, 6, and installed that too. I restarted the server and then opened the MABS. Then after noting what was there, pretty blank, I opened Windows Server Backup. I found that I had not yet installed this feature so using Server Manager I installed that.

Now I reopen the Windows Server backup program and note that the second 'Backup' item appears in the navigation pane to the left. I click on that and it shows MS Azure Backup at the top of the right side window. Below that is the error:

Following error occurred during MAB snapin operation. Error details: MAB encountered an internal error. wait... and the last sentence is 'Please close the MAB SnapIn and restart it.

In the 'Data Protection Manager UI' I see the message, "There are no computers agents installed. To install agents, click install"

I restart the server VM; open the MABS 'Data Protection Manager UI'; open Windows Server backup. No change.

Not at all sure how I'm supposed to add the storage disk, or interact with the Azure backup vault now that I have MABS installed. I'm starting to read the Technet article 'Configure storage pools and disk storage' now. Hope I did not make a mistake by getting my storage disk prepped in Hyper-V as a .vhdx so i could attach it to my MABS VM instance.

Basically, I followed these instructions: https://azure.microsoft.com/en-us/documentation/articles/backup-azure-microsoft-azure-backup/

Windows Server Backup 'Warning' Email Notifications

$

H Everyone,

I have configured 'Failure' Email Notifications for Windows Server Backup on our 2012 R2 Server but I'm having issues trying to configure different notifications for 'Success' and 'Warning' status. An example:

- Windows Server Backup ends with a warning status "Completed with warnings". When I check Event Viewer to try to determine what Event ID I can have as a trigger I can't seem to find any specifically related to the backup's 'Warning' status.

Looking at the 'Windows Logs\Application' area there are 'Information' events at the time of the backup completing but those IDs also show up for 'Failure' backups as well (and some of them are present for 'Success' backups even).

The 'Failure' notifications use Events logged in 'Applications and Services Logs\Microsoft\Windows\Backup\Operational' log but looking at the Event IDs for Successful and Warning backups, they are the same.

Does anyone know of Event IDs, maybe logged somewhere else deep in the Event Viewer, that I can use to differentiate between these two backup completion status'?

This server in particular is doing a full backup of itself (System Reserved, C:, a Hyper-V Server and it's Host Component, Bare metal recovery, System state) to a dedicated external HDD...

...BUT I'm also trying to setup these notifications on systems that are only doing 'Bare metal' backups (includes: System, C:, Bare metal recovery, System state) to NAS so I'd need Event IDs for those 'Success' and 'Warning' backups as well (if they are different).

If more information is required I can provide as necessary. Any help on this would be appreciated. Thanks.

Bare Metal restore from a physical Windows 2008 R2 Server to a Virtual Machine

Hello,

I originally posted this question in the General forum but was recommended to post here instead, so here goes:

I am having problems trying to test a DR bare metal restore of a physical Windows 2008 R2 Server to a Vmware Virtual machine. For DR recovery testing reasons. We have successfully used this process for recovering Server 2003 servers but are having no luck with carrying out the procedure from a windows 2008 R2 Server.

We use Arcserve for our backups which do a simple volume and system state backup and I am using this for the restore testing. It would be difficult for me to move backup solutions as we have many servers.

What happens is I build a Virtual Windows 2008 Server with the same Service Pack and Volume sizes as the physical server I want to restore, carry out a restore volumes and System state (I can successfully use this procedure for 2003 Servers)

On restarting the VM I get:

“Windows failed to Start” 0x00000e The boot selection failed because a required device in inaccessible

I have tried loading the command prompt from the repair option and doing the following:

Using Bootrec / RebuildBCD, Bootrec  /FixMBR, Bootrec /Fixxboot

Using sfc / scannow

I have also tried using bcedit to set the boot manager and boot loader locations all with no luck.

I have also tried this tip from Mark Minasi:
1.Have a file level and system state backup performed with your backup software ( NetBackup was used) of the physical box
2.Build a new 2008 R2 VM using default hardware  and name it the same as the box you are restoring (make sure to have VMtools installed)
3.Perform a file level restore from your backup solution to the new VM
4.Perform a system state restore to the server
5.Reboot to Windows Recovery CD
6.Cancel Auto repair if it starts
7.Click “Command Prompt Link”
8.Type regedit and press enter
9.Single click HKLM
10.Click File>Load Hive
11.Navigate to D:\Windows\System32\Config
12.Double Click System
13.Type VMRestore as key name
14.Navigate to HLKM\VMRestore\ControlSet001\Services\LSI_SAS
15.Right click the Start key and click Modify
16.Change Value Data: to 0 and click OK
17.Highlight the HKLM\VMRestore click single clicking on VMRestore in the tree structure
18.Click File>Unload Hive>Yes
19.Exit Registry Editor
20.Exit command prompt
21.Click Restart
22.You should now boot into the OS.

So far what ever I do does not seem to resolve the issue. Any advice or pointers to articles would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance

Andy

Move shadow copies to another SAN storage

$

We have shadow copies  feature enabled on Win2008 R2 server for users' home folder and department shared folders as a quick way to restore for users, so we don't have to wait for backup tapes pull back from DR site. Everything works perfect for us.

Now, my boss wants to move these shadow copies to another new SAN storage. Can it be done? Those shadow copies saved on different drives in old SAN and attached to the Windows 2008R2 server. I remember not while ago someone told me that shadow copies can't be moved. If I move them, the will be gone. Is it true? If it's not true, is there anyone can help  me with this? Thanks!

Can you mirror your operating system hard drive?

Hi All,

Every once in a while my server restarts unexpectedly, and I suspect that is because I set up my hard drives incorrectly. So my question here is two folds: Can I set up my hard drives as below? If not, is it the cause for my server to restart? I'm pretty new to managing my server and its set up, so forgive me if these questions seem silly.

I have 4 Hard Drives. I have wanted HD1 to be backed up by HD2, and HD3 to be backed up by HD4. Typically, I would set them up as mirrors of each other. However, I am not certain if you can backup HD1 by mirror because it has the operating system on it. Secondly, I wanted to use Storage Spaces and Data Pool, so I shared HD3 and HD4 as one pool instead of mirroring them.

Would appreciate any thoughts on this set up, thank you!

windows could not start block level backup engine service

Hello,

Im trying to perform system state backup for one of the server its unable to run. Last week we have performed the system state backup without any issue.

Operating System:2008

OS Version: R2 Small Business Server 2011 x64 Edition Build 7600

RAM-32 GB

Following event ID is reported in the logs;

Log Name:      Application

Source:        Microsoft-Windows-Backup

Date:          7/2/2013 2:25:35 PM

Event ID:      754

Task Category: None

Level:         Information

Keywords:

User:          SYSTEM

Computer:      ABC

The Block Level Backup Engine service has stopped.

When we try to restart the Block Level Backup Engine service we get error as “Windows could not start the Block Level Backup Engine Service on Local Computer.

Error 0x800700b7: Cannot create a file when that file already exists.”

I have already restarted Virtual disk and Volume shadow copy service, but no luck.

Any help in resolving this issue will be much appreciated.

Thank you.

Searched around and have seen others with this issue but no real solutions.

I have a 14TB Deduplicated volume that loses its vss about once a month. I just lost this lasts night and have seen some interesting stuff.

First the error

The shadow copies of volume E: were deleted because the shadow copy storage could not grow in time.

Consider reducing the IO load on the system or choose a shadow copy storage volume that is not being shadow copied.

PS C:\Windows\system32> vssadmin list shadowstorage /for=e:

vssadmin 1.1 - Volume Shadow Copy Service administrative command-line tool(C) Copyright 2001-2012 Microsoft Corp.Shadow Copy Storage association

For volume: (E:)\\?\Volume{9b6bb5ae-8d5e-4f13-94ac-8655fc90e4f2}\

Used Shadow Copy Storage space: 507 MB (0%)

Allocated Shadow Copy Storage space: 3.14 GB (0%)

Maximum Shadow Copy Storage space: 1.40 TB (9%)

If i look at previous versions i only show the snapshot from this morning at 7:00 AM

However if i type vssadmin list shadows. it shows 30+ Contents of shadow copy set ID.

I am starting to run low on space but i still have over 20% free and over 3.1TB of space.

Any ideas here?

Hi all!

Quick question regarding windows server backup. If a backup is stopped and the disk released. Will re-configuring a backup schedule reformat the disk again and lose all my old backups? I would just like to continue backing up where I left off a couple days ago.

Thanks.

Hi,

I have installed the Windows Server Backup feature several times in Windows Server 2012, but the "Windows Server Backup UI" is missing under the "Administrative Tools" and under the \System32\wbadmin.msc .

Any ideas how to re-create or workaround this problem ?

I really appreciate your help !

how to define a backup retention policy on scheduled backups through windows server backup?

$

Hi,

I'm wondering if we can set/define any retention policy for scheduled backups in windows server backup. Don't see anything in GUI to set a specific retention. MSFT articles says, it automatically manages the disk space but it doesn't tells anything on the limit e.g. how many shadow copies/ backups it can retain or what's the threshold after which it discards the oldest backup version to reclaim disk space on destination folder/network share. Would appreciate if anyone can address this.

Robocopy skips source files

$

I'm using Robocopy to copy files from a Novell fileserver to a new Windows Server 2012 fileserver.   Robocopy is randomly skipping files and directories in the source.  I'm using this command:

robocopy R:\USER\michellea'E:\user' /MT /e /purge /ZB /fft /R:0 /W:0 /XA:H /LOG+:'C:\LogFiles\users'$a'.txt

I copied a few of the missing directories and files into the destination directory and when I run Robocopy again they are removed.  The log file shows them as extra files:

Log Sample

*EXTRA Dir        -1 E:\michellea\MyNotesFiles\Notes\xsp\nsf\themes\
   *EXTRA File      23594 E:\michellea\MyNotesFiles\Notes\xsp\nsf\themes\notes.theme

The skipped directories and files have the same attributes as others that are copied. I ran Robocopy in verbose mode and it does not list the skipped directories or files.  I tested using RichCopy and it does transfer the files.  Thanks

Additional Testing

Last 4 folders in a source directory - Not copying "work for today" and "work measurement study"

Travel, Web, work for today, Work Measurement Study

Test 1

I changed the name to "Work for today 1" and "work measurement study 1"

Results 1

Nothing changed - Did not copy

Test 2

Changed the names to "1 work for today" and "1 work management study"

Log file section:

*EXTRA Dir        -1 E:\bryanw\Web\

New File      176714 R:\USER\bryanw\1 work for today\Accomplishments 2012.twd

New File      120129 R:\USER\bryanw\1 Work Measurement Study\District WCD July 2012 (final).pdf

Results 2

Copied the new folders "1 work for today" and "1 work measurement study"

Removed previously copied (and last folder in the directory) "Web"

Test 3

Changed the names back to original name "work for today" and "Work Measurement Study"

Log file section:

*EXTRA Dir        -1 E:\bryanw\1 work for today\

*EXTRA Dir        -1 E:\bryanw\1 Work Measurement Study\

New File      232109 R:\USER\bryanw\Web\ITSO-SOC Server Assessment - Questionnaire

Results 3

Copied the Web directory and removed the "1 work for today' and "1 Work Measurement Study" Ignored the original "work for today" and "Work Measurement Study"

I used Beyond Compare and it seems this is occurring within all of the robocopy destination directories.  Its typically the last 1 or 2 directories and random files in various directories.

I am currently using version 6.2.9200.20682 (same results with 6.2.9200.16384 and 6.2.9200.16578)

Backup Failure Windows Server 2008 R2

$

Summary:

The Windows Backup utility fails when run automatically.

Details:

The backup fails with error code "'0x80780034' (Windows Backup failed to create the shadow copy on the storage location.)"

The associated VSS error event: "Unexpected error CreateFileW(\\?\GLOBALROOT\Device\HarddiskVolumeShadowCopy549\,0x80000000,0x00000003,...).  hr = 0x80070013, The media is write protected."

Step Already Taken:

Checked to make sure the VSS was actually running, and changed the startup type to "automatic"

Checked to make sure the backup volume was writable. (it is)

Searched google for similar issues and found none. (though a plethora of windows backup and VSS errors were found, none fit the issue)

Notes:

The volume is a mounted iSCSI drive.

The backup succeeds if triggered manually.
