was unable to create a snapshot of the selected volume 0x186C2

Hello,

I'm novice to this area, after the execution of all the instructions for setting up the backup agent gives an error message: "Microsoft Azure Recovery Services Agent was unable to create a snapshot of the selected volume. Please try the operation again. If the issue persists, contact Microsoft Support(0x186C2)".

So,I experience a problem making a snapshot of selected volume.

Operating System Windows Server 2012 installed on the virtual machine in the cloud, on the server the agent is installed and the file backup is also on this server.

Thanks in advance for your help!

Vyacheslav.

wbadmin

I am trying to make a scheduled backup job to my qnap NAS shared network drive.

In the qnap I have created a user administrator and given it the exact same password aa for my windows server administrator

I made a shared folder on the qnap and gave qnap user administrator r/w to this folder.

From a PC I try to access this folder it asks me for a login and password I give the administrator user and password I just made and I get access to the folder, thus proving the login details.

I know the server login is good as I can access the server with it

Now when I try to create a scheduled job in wbadmin I can select the network drive and enter the the credentials I made on the qnap.

so far no problem the last step wbadmin does is try to create the job and fails with error "the user name or password is invalid

How is this possible I have just tested both and they worked and they are identical for both the server and the NAS.

This appears to be a mega bug in the wbadmin software and where can I download a patch for this bug. I am amazed they didn't discover this in their testing before releasing the software

I did try to use "access control" but in Microsoft's wisdom they have greyed this option out. extremely clever of them ... NOT

Backing up Linux VM using Hyper and DPM 2012 R2

$

Hi,

I have few linux VMs hosted on server 2012 R2 hyper-v, which I backup using DPM 2012 R2. Backups are running fine but the problem is whenever DPM starts backing up the Linux VM, hyper-v saves that vm and restore it again in a few minutes.

Saving a running VM disconnects applications that VM is serving. I have installed latest version of "Linux Integration Services" and now I can see that DPM does shows that VM is 'Online' which was 'offline' previously but still whenever I fire a backup on DPM it saves my VM and starts backup.

Is it possible to backup Linux VM without save/restore process?

Hi all,

During backup operations, on my Windows Server 2012 R2 (Hyper-v role installed) I find this warning in Event Log:

Event ID 51: An error was detected on device \Device\Harddisk5\DR43 during a paging operation.

How could I solve this issue? or Could I safely ignore this message?

Just for information, before latest OS Update Rollup installation, we also found the event below:

Event ID 157: Disk 5 has been surprise removed.

Thanks a lot,

David

Best backup policy Windows 7/10 and 2003 server

Hello.

I have around 10 machines running windows 10 and windows 7. I make backup of several folders and outlook pst files from clients with default backup tools of windows on a share folder in a windows 2003 server. The hard disk on which the backup is made is 2TB but it fills up quickly because the clients' outlook files are very large and the truth is that I do not know how you could make these copies in the simplest way possible. What do you advise me?

WBAdmin Logs Full Backups as Incrementals

$

Hi

We are backing up a 2012 R2 server using WBAdmin. The backup is written to a network share on a Linux box, where it's written to tape using a backup system on that Linux server.

I understand that WBAdmin will only perform full backups when writing to a network share, and the full backup gets overwritten each backup. Testing shows this to be the case.

However, the WBAdmin log shows an incremental being performed, and it only reports a small amount of data being backed up.

Despite this log, I've run a test restore from the linux network share, and a full backup of all volumes is being performed. Also the Linux server shows the expected number of .vhdx files of the expected size.

Is this know behavior, something to do with the network share full-only restriction clashing with the you-can-run-any-schedule-as-long-as-it's-a-14-day-incremental non-configurable nature of WBAdmin?

Should I be concerned that the logs are incorrect despite test restores working?

Windows Storage Server 2012 Bare Metal Restore

Hi. We have bought a Thecus W5810 device and it runs Windows Storage Server 2012. Most of the computers in our small business are setup with multiple hard drives. We would like to be able to back them up in a way that we can someday do a bare metal restore of it. Currently, we cannot get the bare metal restore to work properly on computers with multiple disk drives. Is it possible to perform that type of restore? Can you help us figure out what settings are necessary to complete our goal?

Thank you!

Windows Server 2012 R2 Backup Failing.

Hello all,

I would like to ask for some help regarding the system backup on a Windows Server 2012 R@ which is failing, either when I run it manually or scheduled. I also run WSUS on this same server. There're a few things that I have done before the backups stopped working and I think they are related. I would like to know if anyone could help me on how to fix this. Thanks.

1. I reinstalled WSUS and WID

2. I changed the Local drive which the backups are exported.

When I look at the logs I see that there are a bunch of database errors at the time of the backup:

Wbadmin.msc on windows server 2012 fails to start in MMC with error wbengine.exe 0xc000005

Hi,

Since some time now i have not been able to use the Windows server backup tool anymore.

I cant really tell since when this started, but for all i know the windows server backup service worked fine.

I even created a backup schedule and it made some backups.

I am running this windows server 2012 Standard at home with just a couple of basic applications.

The server is used to host several websites with IIS, it manages my local DHCP and is used for locally shared storage.

There are no other security applications installed yet, because i am trieing to get rid of this error first. (so no symantec or whatever)

Since some time i am having trouble opening the windows backup snap-in.

When ever i trie to open the Windows server backup snap-in i get the following error:

A fatal error occurred during a Windows Server Backup snap-in (Wbadmin.msc) operation.

Error details: The Windows Server Backup service has stopped.

Close Wbadmin.msc and then restart it.

Whenever this error occures the folowing error is show in the windows logbook:

I tried to find simmilar cases over the internet but i cant seem to find a solution for the problem.

I already tried to remove and reinstall the Windows server backup feature, this did not help.

Is there anyone here that can help me find a solution for this problem ?

Thank you !

hyperV VM backup failing using Veeam B&R - VSS writer error

friends i am using veeam B&R for backip up my VMs and my infra is very beefed up IBM servers which are getting backed up on a storage device .. but my jobs are failing .. it hass never happened that my job gets completed properly .. things like .. VMs restarting, VMs getting berry slow, VM backup error - VSS writer fatal error etc.

i check with Veeam engineer with a case and after his 10 days research he said its Msoft issue and i should knoe their doors. below are few errors which i get when backup job failed for VMs... there is nothing common in VMs failing .. any random VM fails...

1. VSS writers inside virtual machine 'CLIENT VM' failed to perform BackupComplete to its shadow copy (VSS snapshot) set: A function call was made when the object was in an incorrect state for that function (0x80042301). (Virtual machine ID 20A3EAB9-89A6-4BC9-8AA5-96AAE3956610)

2. Guest processing skipped (check guest OS VSS state and hypervisor integration components version)
Failed to create snapshot (Microsoft CSV Shadow Copy Provider) (mode: Crash consistent) Details: Guest processing skipped (check guest OS VSS state and hypervisor integration components version)
Error: Guest processing skipped (check guest OS VSS state and hypervisor integration components version)

MY all VMs have updated integration components.

3. this is very frequent:      Failed to create snapshot (Microsoft CSV Shadow Copy Provider) (mode: Veeam application-aware processing) Details: Writer 'Microsoft Hyper-V VSS Writer' is failed at 'VSS_WS_FAILED_AT_FREEZE'. The writer's timeout expired between the Freeze and Thaw events. --tr:Failed to verify writers state. --tr:Failed to perform pre-backup tasks.
Retrying snapshot creation attempt (Writer 'Microsoft Hyper-V VSS Writer' is failed at 'VSS_WS_FAILED_AT_FREEZE'. The writer's timeout expired between the Freeze and Thaw events. --tr:Failed to verify writers state. --tr:Failed to perform pre-backup tasks.)
Queued for processing at 12/16/2016 3:40:31 AM
Task has been rescheduled
Unable to allocate processing resources. Error: Writer 'Microsoft Hyper-V VSS Writer' is failed at 'VSS_WS_FAILED_AT_FREEZE'. The writer's timeout expired between the Freeze and Thaw events. --tr:Failed to verify writers state. --tr:Failed to perform pre-backup tasks.

not sure what to do and what not .. VSS writers are checked by Veeam engineer on host as well as VMs and as per him all are fine.

guys can you help as VMs getting down is really creating  issues for me.

Thanks, Happiness Always

Server 2012 (Not R2) Event ID 157

Hi Everyone, I am running Server 2012, (Not R2) and I have been using hot swap removable esata drives for backups.

(Rotated every day 5 days)

This has always worked just fine, (about 3 years)  when I would remove them, I would see a Event ID 157 in logs and just ignore. (disk 0 surprised removed)

Now at I am starting to see an actual Pop Up Info Screen that says: (Showing Pic from Internet)

windows-detected-hard-disk-problem. Back up your files immediately to prevent information loss, and then contact the computer manufacturer to determine if you need to repair or replace the disk.

Which disk is failing?
The following hard disks are reporting failure:
Disk Name: ST310005 28AS SCSI Disk Device    (MY Actual Backup Drive)
Volume: Unknown

The drives are not failing, the backup work just fine, this just started, seems to be after one of the MS updates, but really not sure, other than it has just started not more that a week ago.

Has anyone else had this problem?, can I just select Don't ask me about this problem again?

     Thank You in Advance!

Hi Guys,

I want to create a weekly backup using "wbadmin start backup" and backup only E drive (not C:Drive) and the backup destination is on a NAS(network attached storage).
Below is a syntax i created.

wbadmin start backup -exclude:C:\ ^-backupTarget:"\\10.0.0.15\backup" -quiet >> C:\backupLogs.txt

Is this the correct syntax to backup into a NAS? Anybody suggest using the correct syntax to include also a username into NAS?

MY Backup Scope:
*Backup job - Weekly (Thursday)
*Backup source - E:Drive
*Backup destination - NAS(network attached storage)

Error with my new Seagate external drive

$

Hi. So I'm not a computer whiz, but I got a new seagate external hard drive for Christmas since my HP Stream 360's internal drive is so small. I am running Windows 8.1 with a 64-bit operating system, x64-based processor. I have no idea if that means anything, but it might be useful to you, it might not be.

So I got this driver and tried to download Sims4 on it. It got about 20% done before it said that there was an error with the hard drive location and that it had to be fixed. So, I just furrowed my brow and told it to restart again. It restarted and got to about 30% before it did the same thing. I did the same action and it refused to go to the location I wanted it to go. So, this morning I did some research on why it wasn't working and I found that I had to partition it and open volumes? I have no idea what those are, but what I gathered is that it is so you can actually use the disk space itself. I shrugged and followed what the directions told me to do. When they got to the part of "New Simple Volume" I tried to click on it to open the space but it was in that annoying greyed out text instead of the black usable text. So, I did some more research and tried to find why it wasn't working and just decided to fiddle with it myself.

I clicked on the driver name instead of the volume space and tried to initialize it. I used both options, but they both said "Data error(cyclic redundancy check)". Well great, more words that I do not understand whatsoever. I go to your website and find a how-to guide for how to fix it, but it was for a Linux, which I do not have, so I'm not sure if it applies to my system or not. What my question is, after all that information, what am I doing wrong and how do I get my computer to recognize the brand new driver i just received.

If there are any step-by-step instructions I can follow or anything, that would be great.

Thanks,

Sen
