Can't Find Any Way to Control Backups
I perform weekly Bare Metal backups on my Server 2012 R2 Foundation, using the included Windows Server Backup but I can't find any way to control how many are kept, nor how to manually remove older ones. With the Windows 7, 10 etc. backup there's a link to remove old backups, but I can't find one in the Windows Server backup. In the absence of any link for that - and there's nothing in "Help" - I thought that the program would keep a certain number of backups and clear out old ones, but today my disk filled up and when I clicked on "Viewed details" under All Backups, I found dates going back a couple of years, and no way to clear old ones.
Can anyone tell me how I can either specify the number of backups to keep, or how to monitor and remove older ones?

Windows server Backup stopped working.
Hi,
I have a server with a daily backup copy configured on Windows Server Backup. The server is a Windows Server 2008 R2. The copy was working fine for a long time.
Some days ago, When I tried to run Windows server Backup it just stayed on the screen not producing output
In event viwer I saw Event ID 8193
Erro do serviço de cópia sombra de volumes: Erro inesperado ao chamar a rotina ConvertStringSidToSid(S-1-5-21-3908282372-2182227606-2752453359-1156.bak). hr = 0x80070539, A estrutura do ID de segurança é inválida. I removed the user and deleted the entry endend in *.bak on regedit
HKey_Local_Machine\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\ProfileList
Irebooted the server.
The EventId 8193 is no longer showing up on event Id, but the problema remains.
On the CMD, if I do
Vssadmin list writes
It does not produce any output (just says it’s waiting for an answer).
I restarted several times the volume shadow copier service without any success.
What can I do ?
Best regards.
System Writer is not found in the backup
I am still getting the notorious WS08 "System Writer is not found in the backup" error message; including this in Event Viewer:
Backup started at '8/31/2009 1:14:07 PM' failed with following error code '2155348226' (System writer is not found in the backup.). Please rerun backup once issue is resolved.
Restarted the cryptographic service; problem still exists.
Then, I execute this:
The problem goes away...and re-appears on the reboot.
Is Microsoft going to release a hotfix/KB for this issue?

Tom
windows server backup -allcritical switch
Hello,
What's the difference between the 2 commands in backing up the server using windows server backup when there's only one single C partition on the server? One has "-allcritical" and one does not. I"m trying to backup the whole server including the system state and be able to do a bare metal restore if need to.
1) Wbadmin start backup -backupTarget:\\share\2008 -include:C: -vssFull -quiet
2) Wbadmin start backup -backupTarget:\\share\2008 -allcritical -include:C: -vssFull -quiet

How do you backup users emails?
Hello,
I wanted to know how do you backup users emails? We have around 30 users and they are using Outlook 2010 & Thunderbird to access POP/SMTP emails from hosting email server. Since they are using pop so their emails are stored locally on D: drive of their systems. I want to backup them on our file server.
Any easy automated backup solution for this?
Thanks
Server Issue
every time I ping to it, the result is Destination host unreachable. also i cant remote on it with RDP or RDC(Remote Desktop Connection). What is the problem?????
Windows Server Backup keeps losing backup destination drive right before running a backup.
So bit of a weird one.
Ive been using Windows Server backup for a long while now on various clients with various levels of success.
Some work perfectly while others seem to break every second day.
This particular problem is in regards to one server that seems to lose connection with the backup destination drive (USB external 4TB) the moment before the backup is scheduled to start. I have the event logs as follows;
A new volume was detected that is not in the list of volumes to include in the backup. Please add it to the schedule backup configuration if you want to protect this volume.
The backup operation that started at '1601-01-01T00:00:00.000000000Z' has failed because no backup storage location could be found. Please confirm that the backup storage location is attached and online, and then rerun the backup operation.
The backup operation attempted at '2018-07-18T23:00:21.006897600Z' has failed to start, error code '2155348061' (Windows Backup cannot find any of the backup storage locations.). Please review the event details for a solution, and then rerun the backup operation once the issue is resolved.
A lot of people recommend re-installing WSB and commandline tools
Any advice?
Windows Server 2008 R2 Backup and Restore Best Practices
What needs to be considered in setting up the environment so that it can be recovered later and work correctly? In this case just two servers.
Can I just use the bare metal backup from wbadmin?
Difference between Baremetal backup and full backup in 2012 and 2016 OS
Hi
I am planning to perform a bare metal backup for my Active Directory infrastructure. In case my entire AD DC are compromised I need to overcome from the situation.
Using bare metal backup I heard that from MS article we can restore the backup to dissimilar HW.
While selecting the option I can able to see two methods one is bare metal backup another is full server backup.
May I know the right option to perform the bare metal?
Please assist.

How to clear backup history
in Windows Server Backup GUI it shows a list of all the backups run under the messages section (along with any which have failed), and in the status section under all backups it shows that a number of copies are backed up. How do I wipe these messages and the details of the backups (but not delete the actual backups off the disk) and also, some of those copies simply dont exist anymore so how can I make sure it reflects what backups are actually stored on the backup disks?
This is running on a Windows Server 2008 system
thank you
Windows 2016 Server backup Disk no drive letter
Hi All,
I upgraded Server 2012R2 to 2016, Now the backup has some issues, im not sure if the upgrade caused this i think it maybe have been an update.
"Disk Does not have drive letter" \\?\volume etc etc
I think it is a system resderve or recovery partition. or possibly a 2nd one created from the upgrade?
I've tried giving the volume a drive letter using mountvol but then it just errors saying it cannot access the volume. I've tried removing the backup backing up somewhere else, restarting etc. I can't de-select the drive because it says its part of the bare metal backup
Cant post screen shots because my account isnt verified.

About two weeks ago my backup stopped working on my Hyper-V host using Windows Server backup. The backup Windows show no backups, and the logs just state that the backup engine stopped. If I try to run a manual backup it fails with the message below.

Problems with System Writer on Windows Server Enterprise
Hi everyone,
I got a problem when I use Avamar on some servers, only Windows Server Enterprise. The backup is not working, and when I'm looking into logs, I can see that I got an error about "System Writer". Indeed, when I launch "vssadmin list writers", I should see "System writer" but I don't.
I searched on internet to get some solutions, like giving some rights on some folders, but it changed nothing and then I saw that I could install the Fix484021 to fix it. But... the fix isn't working on my OS :( (link : https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/2911752/system-writer-is-missing-and-backups-fail-in-windows-server-2008)
I tried to contact the support by chat, but I don't get an answer from it because it's laggy.
Waiting for help.
Thanks in advance.

Clément.
Windows Server Backup leads to BSOD 0xEF or 0x7A, Problem with VSS Writers Registry
Hi,
one of our W2K12 R2 Std Server always stops with BSOD 0xEF or 0x7A when Windows Server Backup ist starting.
After many hours of research and trying, i found out, that there must be a problem with the registered writers for VSS. The 'DISKSHADOW' command 'LIST WRITERS' leads to same BSOD's.
My questions about that:
1. I did not find the registry key's where the vss writers are registered to check them manually. Does any1 know where the writers are registered?
2. Does any1 know how to repair the registry for the vss writers? I found this article 'http://kb.macrium.com/KnowledgebaseArticle50010.aspx' from 2014 but im not sure if this is still a good advice for W2K12 R2 server?
Any help appreciated. Thanks in advance!
Michael
