How do I get windows to automatically handle my backup disk space?

$

I keep getting out of space messages for my backup disk even though (*I think*) I've given Windows complete control over managing that space. Is there some way to have the completely automated so Windows doesn't just spam backup copies and then stop bc it ran out space?

I am using the built in Win 7 backup control panel to backup my files to a dedicated second internal hard drive (E) ~700GB capacity  from my C drive ~300GB used of 600GB capacity. Today I got the message The disk where your backups are being saved doesn't have enough free space. I clicked on some button to delete older backups to free up space and deleted the oldest one which it said was using up about 200GB.

I have the

Manage Windows Backup disk space->Change Settings->Let Windows manage space used for backup history (max 200GB) option selected

I also have System Restore disabled for E (as it is only a backup and enabled for C as that is where my data and OS lives- or at least that is my reasoning)

Server 2012: Event ID: 8193 - System writer is missing

Hi Everyone,

I have single server domain environment with Server 2012 Std. and MS SQL 2012.

The problem is, I can’t perform backup. I’m fighting almost three weeks.

On two occasions, I have been successful. I used suggestions from Microsoft TechNet, however after several day performing backup, without any reasons, the problem appears back.

Now I can’t find solution about this error:

The error message is Event ID 8193:

Volume Shadow Copy Service error: Unexpected error calling routine CreateVssExamineWriterMetadata. hr = 0x80042302, A Volume Shadow Copy Service component encountered an unexpected error.

Check the Application event log for more information.

Operation:

I know, System Writer is missing.

There a lot suggestion on WEB, however nothing helps. Everything else, on the server, works fine.

The suggestion from Microsoft: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ee264196(v=ws.10).aspx, is bizarre.

Of course, the Volume Shadow Copy is set to manual.

Also I did try several other sites, ex.: http://systemadministratorrecipes.blogspot.com/2012/08/event-id-8193-vss-error-server-2008-r2.html, but nothing helps.

Does anyone have any idea?

Hey,

I'm using DPM 2012 backup system status for Windows Server 2008 R2, it failed with WSB Event ID: 521, WSB Error Code:  0x65C8C0). From Event log on protected computer, there is Event 512 and  error code 2155348249, the error appears to be caused by low disk space on the protected computer, however with my validation, the free disk still has about 40GB on the system volume(Note: protected computer just only one driver C:)

What should I next? Thanks.

Hi,

Removable Storage Manager option is not available in Add/Remove Features of Server Manager.

I also tried Installing the "Windows6.1-KB974674-x64" but no luck, it prompts to turn on the Removable Storage Management.

Please help me to enable the RSm in Add/Remove features of Server Manager.

Thanks!

Backup - How does backup manage space?

Hi folks.  I was told that the Windows 7 backup will automatically delete space as needed when it runs out but this morning I am being told from the Action Center that there isn't enough room.  Do I have to manually delete backups?  I will note that I am backing up to a network location.  I don't know if that makes a difference.  Thanks.

Windows Server 2008 - windows server backup fails

$

Hi guys,

I have problems with windows server backup. I received every day 2 notifications, 1 is Windows backup successful and the other is Windows backup failed. It's since I'm getting during every backup warning event 51: The backup storage location is running low on free space. Future backup operations that store backups on this location may fail because of not enough space.

I deleted all old shadow copies but nothing changed.  Backup is saving to 2 .vmdk files. Via vSphere client I found out that size of these files is greater than provisioned size of these disks. Is it possible ? Can be this problem ? Thanks for your replies.

Cannot see all networked PC's

Hi,

I have a 2008 R2 Server with 2 active NIC's. One connect to a public network 192.168.1.3. The 2nd NIC is connected to the work network with 10.95.10.1. In network places the server see's PC's from both network segment, but does not see all of them. Another PC that manages the public pc reservations and is connected the same way can see all 25 PC's.

My questions is how do I get the server to see all 25 PC's/

I have a brand new 2008R2 SP1 server (Domain Controller) where I try to make SystemState backup. Backup seems to work fine, but I can not delete oldest.
I'm uncertain if I do have a valid SS backup.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

So do I have a valid Systemstate backup ?
And can I trust I can use it to recover if needed, since it says "No system state backups were found" ?
And why can't I delete the oldest backup ?

Best regards,

"one or more server hard drives must be checked for errors" every day when backup occurs

$

This is on Windows Server 2012R2 Essentials specifically. But I saw the same behavior on 2012 Essentials before switching.

Both on the Dashboard's alerts and daily health reports, it indicates that one or more drives are unhealthy and need to be fixed. However, it does not list any disk specifically. This occurs several minutes after the backups are scheduled, and will change when it happens if I change the time for the backups.

This happens EVERY DAY. Deleting or ignoring the reports just cause it to come back. Disabling backups, or disconnecting the drive they're stored on doesn't fix it. Neither does formatting the drive and setting up backups again.

I've not found any specific errors, and I've scanned the system partitions using their volume ID, and that hasn't helped.

No virus scanner nor disk tools are installed. There are no 3rd party file system filters installed either.

The Event Viewer doesn't indicate any issues specifically either.

This is frustrating and annoying.

Hi all.

Why do we non-authoritative restore? Much easier to promote new server and replicate it.

Windows server 2012 R2 keeps deleting all previous backups

$

Hi,

I have read through for forum to see any previous posts that can apply to the problem I have. There are a few but none of those are answered with solution. If anyone knows the answer for fixing my backup problem below, I will send a million thanks :)

I have a Windows server 2012 R2 standard running as a file server. It has drives as below:

C drive: O/S

D drive: DVD rom

E drive: data. Shared folder. Users map to shared folder in E drive

F drive: Backups drive. Use it to backup the "E\share" folder

E drive has a folder called "share". This folder has about 2TB

F drive has 4.5TB. It's a set of raided drives, Raid 5 using Dell Powervault MD 1000

I'm using the built-in Windows server backup utility(wbadmin) to backup E\share to F drive. The problem is that the backup utility can only keep 1(one) backup file. The properties of F drive shows it has plenty of space. However, if I run 5 backups within one day, it does NOT delete previous backups. The problem is it delete all backups when next day the backup runs. Question is:

Why doesn't it delete other backups ran within the same day?

Why does it delete all backups on the next day it runs the backup?

It appears that it's not the hardware or F drive issues in my case. It's something with configuration or setting under Windows registry and it flags to delete all backups on the next day the wbadmin backup runs. I already formatted and re-installed Windows server 2012 on this machine and it does the same. Did anyone in here ever have this weir situation like this before? I also replaced all the drives in MD1000 to make a new F drive but the backup still does the same.  It's weirder than weird. I have spent my time for last 3 weeks but could not find a solution to fix this issue. Please help...

Windows Storage Server 2008 backup fail to UEFI based computers

Hai All

I have got Windows Storage Server 2008 running on a WD Sentinel DX4000. Recently my company bought a couple of new Dell laptops all running windows 8.1 64bit OS. Only three older laptops were left. Now for the fun part...I installed the connectors pointing to the Sentinel on the laptops, and as expected the pc's show on the dashboard of the Storage Server, but all of the backups fail on the newer laptops. I installed the connectors on the older laptops as well and they go through no problem

The only difference between the older laptops and the new ones are the GPT partition drives and laptops running on UEFI, the older laptops, although running the same OS, do not have GPT and UEFI. I looked at the Event Viewer and found three errors to do with the backup: Event 514 pointing to a ClientVSSProblem, Event 8194 pointing to Volume Shadow Copy Service error: Unexpected error querrying for the VSSWriterCallback interface, hr=0x80070005,Access Denied and the last one is Event 513 CAPI2, Cryptographic Service failed while processing onIdentity() call in the System Writerobject Details: AddLegacyDriverFiles: Unable to back up image of binary Microsoft Link-Layer Discovery Protocol. I did as most articles suggested but with no change. From changing registries to taking ownership of the %windir% and adding the NT AUTHORITY, the NT Service and BUILTIN\Users. No change.

Help is much appreciated before i make a boat anchor out of the WD Sentinel.

Kind regards

Windows Server 2008 Standard automated backup to NAS

Hi,

Could you advise me the Windows backup solution for the Windows server 2008 (not R2).

I have NAS Drive and need to use part of the HDD as a server backup.

I need to configure automated backup to the network share(NAS) using Windows standard utilities, if possible.

Your ideas welcome.

Thanks,

Ilya

Windows Server 2012 R2 Backup - Cannot Restore From Remote Share

I am having trouble restoring an existing backup using windows server backup. The backup is stored on a network share.

I goto recovery wizard > a backup stored on another location > remote shared folder > and then I enter my shared folder:

\\share-pc\SERVERNAME\WindowsImageBackup\SERVERNAME\Backup 2014-12-05 013008

I then get this message:

"The specified remote share does not contain any backups. Provide a path to a remote shared folder that contains backups."

I have confirmed that all of the following paths fail:

\\share-pc\SERVERNAME\WindowsImageBackup\SERVERNAME\Backup 2014-12-05 013008

\\share-pc\SERVERNAME\WindowsImageBackup\SERVERNAME\

\\share-pc\SERVERNAME\WindowsImageBackup\

\\share-pc\SERVERNAME\

I can ping the machine and mount the shares on the server as well.

Any thoughts?
