I also have the Backup Error 0x80080005 Server Failure on Windows 7.
I changed all of the owner to me on all the System Volume Information files but where do I find the backup catalog to delete?

Hi,
A backup job has been setup on Windows Server 2012 (Platform: Win32NT; ServicePack: ; Version: 6.2.9200.0; VersionString : Microsoft Windows NT 6.2.9200.0) via Windows Backup Software UI (Local Backup 1.0).
It is appearing as a scheduled task "\Microsoft\Windows\Backup\Microsoft-Windows-WindowsBackup" belonging to user 'nt authority\system' in task scheduler.
The problem is that the Backup job never start despite the scheduled task running and completing successfully (when run automatically or manually)!
Would you be able to explain why and assist in resolving that issue?
Here is what we know:
When the backup is run manually via the Windows Backup Software UI, it works fine.
When the backup is run via command line (as set in schedule task) in a cmd command prompt (as local/domain 'administrator' or as 'nt authority\system' which is possible by running command prompt via 'PsExec.exe -i -s cmd'), something like "%windir%\System32\wbadmin.exe start backup -templateId:{f11eb3aa-74e7-4ff4-a57b-d8d567ee3f77} -quiet", it works fine.
If you manually run the preset scheduled task while logged in as administrator, the task run and complete successfully but the backup job does not start.
Idem if you schedule task is run automatically at scheduled time.
The schedule task run and complete successfully but the backup job does not start.
It is confirmed by running the following in a command prompt as 'nt authority\system':
schtasks /run /tn "\Microsoft\Windows\Backup\Microsoft-Windows-WindowsBackup"
SUCCESS: Attempted to run the scheduled task "\Microsoft\Windows\Backup\Microsoft-Windows-WindowsBackup".
Despite success result, the Backup job does not start running...
No errors or warning appears anywhere in Event Logs (Microsoft > Windows > Backup or Task Scheduler) nor in the scheduled task History tab. The schedule task complete successfully but no Backup job is run...
If scheduled task automatically set by Windows Backup software is duplicated (copied) and set manually it runs fine as 'administrator' and as 'nt authority\system' (subject that 'nt authority\system' is added to the 'Backup Operators' AD group).
Here is an export of the current pre-set schedule task, is there any settings that need to be changed to make it works?

hello technet community,
I currently have a windows server 2003 SBS and have noticed in the Server Management under Backup, several backup failed attempts.
After going over the Windows Server error messages, this is what I found since 01/19/2015 - 01/22/2015:
Event Source Event Error Occurrences
MsiInstaller | 11260 | 83 times |
MsiInstaller | 11706 | 21 times |
VSS | 7001 | 7 times |
Small Business Server | 5634 | 3 times |
The server to the client computers are having communication issues, most are having trouble opening MappedDrive to access the needed excel spreadsheets. – Note: We’re using office 2003.
On the server, all of the client machines have been given access to the MappedDrive, it’s only on the occasional case where the client has difficulty connecting to the server’s MappedDrive; I’m not entirely sure if this is in part because of the backup fails.
Please let me know if the above errors are causing dysfunctionality on both the server back up and client’s access to the MappedDrive to access the needed files.
Thank you,
Cris
When i try to take backup of Windows Server 2008 R2 and Windows Storage server 2008 to External hard drive. It gives error "Parameter is incorrect".
Am taking full Server backup from server backup utility. Backup includes (System State, Bare metal recovery and 5 local drivers). Full back size is 1.2TB.
Hi Folks,
I am trying, and failing, I might add, to backup a Windows Server 2008r2 to an SMB NAS. The biggest problem is that WBAdmin produces log files that are empty so I can't tell what is really happening. No, that's not really true, is it -- the
biggest problem is that the backup is not completing successfully and I have to look at the logs which are empty. The empty logs are just another symptom of an epic failure to either succeed or describe the reason for failure. I
am hoping I can get some advice.
I tried a minimum backup for diagnostic purposes -- one file.
C:\> WBAdmin Start backup -vssFull -quiet -backupTarget:"\\nas1.tclc.org\Public\backup"
-include:"C:\Test\Junk\Keep\Keep 1.txt"
WBAdmin responded:
wbadmin 1.0 - Backup command-line tool (C) Copyright 2004 Microsoft Corp.
<snip>
The backup of volume Local Disk(C:) to \\nas1.tclc.org\Public\backup is starting...
The backup of volume Local Disk(C:) could not be completed. Error: The version does not support this version of the file format.
The backup operation stopped before completing.
Summary of the backup operation:
------------------
The backup operation stopped before completing.
Log of files successfully backed up:
C:\Windows\Logs\WindowsServerBackup\Backup-03-09-2012_13-06-11.log
Log of files for which backup failed:
C:\Windows\Logs\WindowsServerBackup\Backup_Error-03-09-2012_13-06-11.log
None of the source volumes were backed up.
The above highlighted log files are empty. What does "Error: The version does not support this version of the file format." mean?
The event log reports:
Log Name: Application
Source: Microsoft-Windows-Backup
Event ID: 517
User: SYSTEM
Description:
The backup operation that started at '?2012?-?09?-?03T19:50:47.861369400Z' has failed with following error code '2155348301' (There was a failure in updating the backup for deleted items.). Please review the event details for a solution, and then rerun the backup operation once the issue is resolved.
Please notice the error:"There was a failure in updating the backup for deleted items". Who know what this means?
I also tried a full disk backup. Astonishingly, this seems to work. I STILL get empty logs as indicated above and I really want to see these loges before I believe in these backups. And, backup should always work, even for a single file.
C:\DfsRoots\Users\Home\sa\Backup Scripts>WBAdmin Start backup -allCritical -systemState -vssFull -quiet -backupTarget:"\\nas1.tclc.org\Public\backup" -include:C: -exclude:T:
Thanks for the help,
Chris.
Dear all,
I'm trying to backup my files onto a 2TB big external USB disk. My computer is Dell Latitude E4300.
When I run the backup, it runs normally but ends with this error:
0x810000E4 Windows Backup has encountered a problem with the backup catalog
When checking the zip files on the USB drive, it seems that only some of the files have been backed up. The same confirms the restore option when I browse the files in the backup.
When I start the backup again, it continues - i.e. acknowledges the files already there and backs up a additional files but again fails after some time.
Any ideas please.
Thank you,
Tomas
On a Windows 2008 R2 x64, WBackup fails with the above code. I did find the KB and tryied to apply the HotFix, but get the message that this fix does not apply to this machine.
The backup was running for awhile but quit with this error some times later. Now i have to do some repair work on my KCC and Global Catalog replication, but want to have a fresh, up to date System State backup, but cannot!
any ideas?!?!
I performed backup of a volume storing a database on my server using Windows Server Backup (WSB).
Now I have some old shadows that I would like to remove.
To do that, I use the vssadmin command with ShadowID that I'd like to remove:
vssadmin delete shadows /Shadow={9bae879d-979e-4ec0-b252-720de085d2bf}
However, I get the response
Error: Snapshots were found, but they were outside of your allowed context. Try
removing them with the backup application which created them.
Well, the application that created these shadows was WSB, and WSB GUI does not have command to delete old shadows.
How can I delete these shadows?
TIA
Les
hello,
on a 2012 R2 Server i want to keep 2 different sets of backups. One on a share on a NAS and one on a locally attached USB raid system.
I have two scheduled tasks, one made with the wizard for the local disk, one with a job that runs this script:
c:\Windows\System32\wbadmin.exe START BACKUP -backupTarget:\\backup\Backup\ -systemState -allCritical -include:D: -quiet >> "D:\logs\backupLogs_%date:~-4,4%%date:~-10,2%%date:~-7,2%.txt"
My question is: doing like this will i be sure i sure that the sets are unrelated and the full/incremental backups that are related stay on the same medium?
I don't want the incrementals done on local disk to have as starting point the full ones on NAS.
In the event that one medium fails i still want to be able to recover from the other medium.
Thanks.
I'm using a external drive to house my backup data, but after using the Windows server 2012 Essentials backup software,
I can no longer see the drive in the computer icon. I have no way to verify that data is actually being stored on the drive other than to take the server's word for it. Can you advise a solution?
I have a Windows Server 2008, fully patched that backups recently started to fail and now, we are unable to open the Windows Server Backup. Also unable to open Disk Management or any other applications requiring Virtual Disk.
Attempts to start VDS from service or command line result in the following errors:
1: A timeout was reached (180000 milliseconds) while waiting for the Virtual Disk service to connect.
2: The Virtual Disk service failed to start due to the following error: The service did not respond to the start or control request in a timely fashion.
I added the debuglog to registry and the $vds$.log only records the following:
(PID:8988,TID:10060,17:32:43) ERROR: CVdsLoader::LoadService, 3, hr=8007041D
I have also increased the timeout dramatically to no avail.
SFC /scannow returns:
Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them.
Nothing requiring Virtual Disk Service will operate making backups and imaging impossible.
Any thoughts?
Windows Server SQL database has outgrown a external 1TB drive used to backup the image and SQL databases. Looking to purchase a new expansion 4Tb drive with either USB 3.0 or NAS connectivity. The 4Tb drive is to keep backups for a longer period of time before the oldest is deleted.
Is there a problem anymore with using a size greater than 2Tbs? This drive will be dedicated to the server and backups.
Note: MS image/backup is not used.
Thanks.
Windows 7 users in my domain are unable to configure or change backup settings. Users are able to open Control Panel > Backup and Restore, but when they clickChange settings, they receive the error: Windows Backup - The backup application coud not start due to an internal error: You must be logged on as an administrator to perform this task. (0x8100000010).
The same error is received when executing sdclt.exe /configure at the command prompt, regardless of whether the command prompt is launched using "run as administrator".
I've done significant testing, and have been able to determine that the local administrator account is able to configure backups before the computer is joined to the domain. Once the computer is joined to the domain, the local administrator account and domain users who are in the local administrators group are no longer able to configure backup and restore. Domain administrators are able to configure backups.
This is a new issue, which began occuring sometime in the last 2 months. 3 months ago, users were able to configure backups without issue, and those computers with backups configured are still able to run their backups and do restores; however the settings can no longer be changed.
Clearly something in the domain is doing this, but Group Policy has not been altered, and I can find no setting that would be doing this in any case. Any help is appreciated.
My only Active Directory Server on win server 2008 R2 with one domain controller crashed today. The only backup that i had was IFM media.
So what i have done till now to recover it is a follow
I reintalled window server but this time it is winserver 2012. I added AD DS role to it. Promoted it to Domain Controller. (functionality level is 2008 R2)
On second server i installed win 2008 R2 and trying to add additional domain controller from IFM to recover all of my domain users, computers and GPO's. but i am getting this error
Could not replicate the directory partition CN=schema, CN= configuration, DC=XXX, DC=com from the remote domain
i dont know weather my approach is correct or not
but my simple questions is
Can i recover my all domain computers and users from IFM and in-cooperate them in new forest ?? if yes how can i do that?? urgent help required.
Hi Everyone,
I'm studying for a Network Manager in the IT, and we have exams this week. For the exam we need to set up a complete domain for a simulated company in just 1 week. But the funny thing is that we never used DFS, but they require it.
So our domain is very simple and as follows:
1 DC with DHCP & Exchange
2 File Server
2 Clients (just for testing)
The documentation that our teachers gave us said that they wanted us to make a data partition on the DC and "redirect" it through DFS namespace with the File Server. But isn't it a kind of unlogical? If we need to do it this way, does that mean I don't need to install File Server on that server? Can you guys give me some tips on how to do this?
Thanks in advance!
PS. Sorry for the bad English
Hi,
I'm trying to run a custom backup on my old Win Server 2008, I want to replace the C:\ hard drive. I run the backup and select "Different Options" then "Custom" and then I select "Bare Metal" and it picks:
Bare Metal Recovery
System State
System Reserved
and Local Disk C:
I have a second drive in there that I'll reattach once I get a new C:\ Drive in there.
The backup runs but it ends with two errors in the items list:
System Reserved shows Completed.
C: shows Backup completed with warnings.
Bare metal recovery shows Backup failed to complete.
System state shows Completed.
In the errors tab it says: 4096 bytes could not be read due to the presence of bad clusters on your hard disk,
and so have not been backed up. Run CHKDSK /R on the hard disk, and then retry the backup.
Whats the best or recommended way to run the CHKDSK /R ? Just open CMD and run the command and have
it scan on the next reboot? I can't lose the drive till I get decent backup ...... I have the C:\ contents but it's also
a backup DC in my office.
Cheers'
Dave
