Force Server 2012 to do a full backup

Hello,

I am hoping someone here can point me in the right direction.  I have a Server 2012 R2 Essentials box that is used as a file server.  It just shares files and performs no other services.  I have it connected to a 3TB USB IO Safe for backup purposes. Counting the system drive (c:) and the data drive (E:) I am only using less than 250GB.

I setup the Windows Server Backup using the schedule wizard to back up nightly at 12:30 in the morning.  It shows each night as successful, but rub is that is is only doing incremental backups.  What I am trying to do, is to have it do a FULL backup nightly, and save as separate files on the IO Safe, and only keep 1 week (7 days) of backups.

I have tried several times to do this using the wizard and cannot seem to figure out a way to make this happen.  As a background note, I am not really a IT guy, I was the one whose was volentold into assuming the responsibility.  So this may be a simple task, I just am not sure where to find the options for what I want.

Thank you in advance for any help that you can provide.

Rob

A fatal error occurred during a windows server backup snap-in (Wbadmin.msc) operation.

Error detail:

The windows server backup service has stopped.

The system is a Windows Server 2012 R2 running hyper-V. The built-in Microsoft backup software has been running for several months with no problems.  The software is backing up the "EFI System Partition", C:, Recovery, and several VMs.    Last week (while I was on vacation of course) the backup software began failing with the following error: "The backup operation that started at '‎2015‎-‎06‎-‎09T20:23:20.944542800Z' has failed with following error code '0x8078011E' (Windows Backup failed to get an exclusive lock on the EFI system partition (ESP). This may happen if another application is using files on the ESP. Please retry the operation.). Please review the event details for a solution, and then rerun the backup operation once the issue is resolved."

I tried stopping the anti-virus software as was suggested in a post on this web site but this did not help.

So, currently the backups on this host are not working.  This is a production box so I can not easily reboot the system.  Luckily all the VMs on this host are also replicated to another server.

Is there a tool that would let me see what file is locked?

Any help would be appreciated.

Windows Server Registry

If you could only backup one registry tree (not an entire hive) which would you back up? and why?

If you could be selective within that tree, what sub-tree's would you back up? and why?

I'm inclined to say that HKLM/SYSTEM is more important than most, and perhaps specifically HKLM/SYSTEM/CurrentControlSet. Most of the server settings seem to be located in that tree somewhere, so to me that stands out as something I would want to capture.

Microsoft Volume Shadow Copies

We use Microsoft volume shadow copies on our file server. I allocated it 200GB of space for the Volume Shadow copies. It seems that once it is full, it deletes all the shadow copy entries to free up all of its disk space then starts recreating them again.

Is this how it is supposed to work? I thought it was setup so once the Shadow Copies is full, it would delete older entries needed to keep up to date with the new ones instead of deleting them all and starting to create them again.

Hardware-Setup:
HP Proliant DL180 G6 Rack Server
2 x 500 GB Seagate Barracuda Sata Drives ES-2 ST 3500320NS

Sata Raid Controllers - HP Smart B110i

Software:

Windows Server 2008r2

Windows server 2008r2 set-up on Disc 1 in a Windows software Raid 1 configuration – - system boots up fine from either disc choice in POST:

Server 2008r2
Server 2008r2 Duplex

I have created a Windows system state backup on a NAS installed on my Domain which completed fine. During testing the Recovery process the option of selecting the OS to recover revealed an empty console box with no OS present. The only choice to proceed was to click on the next button which resulted with a dialogue asking for Hard Disk drive drivers – Browsed my Server 2008r2 disc and HP Proliant setup-disc for Drivers / Controllers - Selected the HP Smart Array B110i as listed in Device manager - still no OS. Both drives are Dynamic and are showing in Windows disk management as HP Logical Volume Scsi Disk Devices (is this correct?) . Been on Seagate site to download drive identication tool - Works on Client PC's - detects firmware ID details but shows nothing when run on Server.

When I recover with my .bkf file my windows 2003 r2 it asks for activation

Hi, I'm having a big trouble trying to recover my windows 2003 standard r2 pack with my .bkf file. I've done what I've allways do, I go to backup files --> Recover --> Select my .bkf file --> Advanced --> and here no matter what I select even rewritte all the files or respect the old ones I get the same problem( I will discribe it later). And when the recover program it's done he asks me for restarting my server. So I do. After restarting the program it asks me for my user and passowrd. So I write them and then after a while a pop up tells me that I need to activate my product and he asks for a product key.

The image is with the spanish version because so was required by the client. But the translation is what I wrote above

sorry momentany I can't add the image, i will make it later

So I click in yes (Si), and then it goes to another blue screen window that asks for the key activation but I can't do anything. See the image below.

sorry momentany I can't add the image, i will make it later

The wierd thing is that I can't close the window because I'm unable to navigate with the mouse across the window.

I'm using as you can see virtualbox to execute my windows 2003 r2 pack. I'm sure that my .bkf file isn't corrupted so I can't understand what the problem is. I'm really frustrated with this problem. Any help would be nice

Thank you for your replies

We have Windows 2012 Server hosting 2 VMs - Domain Controller & RDS.  We have been doing Windows Server Backup incremental and have an ongoing issue with scheduled backups each night.  The backup shows completed with warnings and generates 2 log files.

The first log files shows:

Backup of volume C: succeeded.

We had been getting a successful backup once or twice a week which showed completed (with no mentioned of warnings) but now it regularly shows completed with warnings as noted above.

We did a manual full backup of the DC to a different external drive a few days ago and that completed without warnings and the backup shows:  E: Completed 63.38 Full - VSS Copy Backup Successful, 8/27/13 3:35 PM - 4:43 PM. Data Transferred 63.38

On a side note, we can view the logs in the windows/logs/windowsserverbackup directory but when we attempt to view the details of a log file through the Local Backup Console for any log which shows completed with errors, we get a "MMC has detected an error in the snapin and will unload and then it shows Object referenced not set to instance of an object."  The manual backup noted above that was successful is able to be viewed through the Local Backup Console without this error.

Any idea as to why this is failing during the scheduled backups?  This hosts a database that we need to have regular successful backups.

I have a domain controller which holds all FSMO roles installed on W2k8 R2 SP1 machine. Last friday I set up system state backup in WSB and backup was completed successfully. But, today I set up scheduled backup of system state which failed and later I set up backup once of system state which failed too. In Windows log for WSB there is following error:

Error in deletion of [C:\System Volume Information\EfaData\SYMEFA.DB] while pruning the target VHD: Error [0x80070020] The process cannot access the file because it is being used by another process.

Any help will be very useful. Thanks in advance!!!

Windows Server Backup - Hangs while loading...

Hi there,
I would like to setup backups for my server machine. After installing the Server Backup features, I went to use it for the first time.
Opened up the Windows Server Backup where I received:

"Reading data; please wait..."

The problem is, that it never progresses past this screen. My mouse turns into a timer icon and nothing happens. The application just hangs.

Anyone else having this issue?

OS: Windows Server 2008 Standard Edition x64
I just recently installed Hyper-V and upgraded my BIOS, if that matters. However no virtual machines are presently installed yet.

Restore deleted shadow copies

$

Our company got hit by crypto.

We did not panic, we started restoring data from windows backup along with shadow copy (Server 2008). Everything was well.

Until we found it that one of the folders was fully restored (because shadow copy version we were restoring from was deleted while we are working on it due to space).

We took the backup drives off and mounted them to a hyper-v host to see if fully restoring the server with a system image will allow us to see shadow copies. and nothing.

I was looking into DiskShadow, but i think this lists backup images on a drive not the shadow copies.

My question is: What are my options now? any chance i can get the shadow copies back.

And also, is disk shadow the actual backup or is it the shadow copy versions?

Thanks.

Server 2012 Backup to 3TB WD My Book Essentials problem

$

Trying to sort out backup issues.  Our agency recently installed six new Dell PowerEdge T110 II servers running Windows Server 2012 Standard.  Each is at a different physical location, but sites are connected via VPN to our network.  We also purchased several Western Digital 3TB My Book Essentials external hard drives with one connected to each server via usb (these are usb 3.0 capable, but the servers don't have 3.0 ports).  We have set up Windows Server Backup to do a daily backup to these drives which initially works on all of them.  We have the data being backed up on our network using another solution as well.

The backup jobs are identical on each machine [Bare metal recovery, System State, System Reserved, Local Disk (C:), and Data (E:)].  Also included is the advanced VSS Full Backup option.  I started remotely connecting to these machines from the main office each morning after backups ran to be certain that they backups completed (which they did initially).  All was OK, then one randomly failed & continued to fail because the drive was unavailable.  Windows Event Viewer shows"Windows Backup cannot find any of the backup storage locations" and the drive does not show in Disk Management.

I then drive across town to the location and have to disconnect power & usb to the drive, wait a little bit, then reconnect and it will come up and be recognized again and work for a few days.  This has happened to all of them but not at the same time.

I've remoted to each server and made sure the USB hubs in device manager have the box unchecked that allows the OS to turn off the device to save power as I thought that might be the problem.  That didn't help.

My next step is to go to the locations and try to run firmware updates on the drives, but I haven't found any documentation as to whether this is really a fix for what is happening. WD tells me those drives might work, but that Windows Server 2012 is not supported. We are a non-profit and cannot afford to replace all of these drives so I hope I can get them working and that the backups are restorable.

Has anybody seen this issue and know what the fix is? This is driving me nuts.  Please help.  Thank you.

Poweredge 2970 went down, had backups and trying to restore on another 2970 with dissimilar hardware. Every time I direct the restore wizard to the backup, it won't recognize it. It sees other backups that are too old to work with. Assuming the backup is corrupt, is there any way it can be repaired?
