Starting Windows 7 Backup : Server execution failed(0x80080005) ????

A MSFT asked me to post here and here is a link to my original post and some troubleshooting already done.
http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/w7itprogeneral/thread/8669451c-772e-4bb4-91b0-9b089bf5c2cd/

My original first post in that forum:
Running a Sony VGN-NS140E laptop with Windows 7 Home Premium x64. This was a "clean" install versus an upgrade install. When I try to "Set up backup" under "Backup and Restore" I get an error "The backup application could not start due to an internal error: Server execution failed(0x80080005)". I am running Comodo x64 Internet Security (Firewall, AntiVirus, AntiSpyware) and am not running a system registry cleaner or optimizer in the background, although I have run CCleaner as a registry cleaner in the past. I do not know if this is a new or old problem as this is the first time I tried to use Windows Backup. I did try starting both Volume Shadow Copyservice and Microsoft Software Shadow Copy Provider service , they both successfully started but Windows Backup still produces this error. Thank you in advance for your help.

Problem still occurs, thanks for your interest.

Azure Backup cbengine.exe consuming high memory utilisation

Hi there

Got Azure backup running from Server 2012 r2 to Azure cloud.  What is happening is that every second day I get a call from the customer stating they are not able to access database on server.  When investigate it was found that the cbengine.exe process memory usage has grown to the point that the server databases become unresponsive.

I have upgraded to the latest Azure backup agent and still this problem.

Any ideas welcome

Windows Server backup won't schedule

When I try and schedule a Windows Server (R2) backup (with the Exchange plug-in) it says "The task XML contains a value which is incorrectly formatted or out of range". I can submit an immediate task without a problem, though.

I did enable the backup feature after Exchange was installed. That's the only thing that I can think of which may be causing this.

Backup Hyper V VM

Hi Server Expert,

Currently we have one Hyper V Server running Windows Server Standard 2012. Inside this server, there are four VM being configured, VM1, VM2, VM3, and VM4.

I would like to check whether it is possible to use perbuilt Windows Server Backup to do a full backup of the VMs, so when there is something happen to the actual server say the VM1 is corrupted totally, i can straight away just use the full VMs backup image created using Windows Backup and restore that VM in full to another new partition created and shutting down the spoilt server and bring up the new server?

What is the limitations of the Windows backup compared to other backup software like Symantec Backup Exec? For me one of the advantages of Windows Backup is i don't require to purchase license.

Thanks.

I am trying to load some documents from the old hard drive in my old laptop on to my partners laptop, I am not very good with computers and would appreciate any input and idiot proof instructions as to where to find, open and move said document onto partners device //

Creating a restore point fails. The following application error is logged:

Volume Shadow Copy Service error: Unexpected error CreateFileW(\\?\GLOBALROOT\Device\HarddiskVolumeShadowCopy1\,0x80000000,0x00000003,...).  hr = 0x80070001, Incorrect function.

Operation:
   Processing PreFinalCommitSnapshots
Context:
   Execution Context: System Provider

Before creating the restore point the vss writers are all in a stable state:
vssadmin list writers

There are no corrupt shadow copies:

vssadmin list shadows
vssadmin delete shadows /all
No items found that satisfy the query.

I also removed all hidden storage shadow copies in the device manager.

Backup fails with Error Code 2155348041

Hello,

I used external Seagate drive for backup for about a year but I ran out of space. Another one was bought, only difference being the size; I went from 1 TB to 3 TB. I connected it and configured the backup. The backups weren't successful since. I haven't any hardware or access issues with this drive as I can partition it, the drive is detected, I can manually copy the data and manipulate it. The same drive I can use for backup on Windows 7 64bit Pro PC and it works fine. I've exactly the same issue at another location with the same operating system, Windows Server 2008 R2 Standard, except the manufacturers are different.

Here's the error message:

The backup operation that started at '‎2013‎-‎04‎-‎03T19:32:30.126635800Z' has failed with following error code '2155348041'. Please review the event details for a solution, and then rerun the backup operation once the issue is resolved.

Any input is greatly appreciated

Thank you

Server 2012r2 Windows Backup Hyper-V item shows on VM as "offline" when it is not

$

This may be a question for Windows Backup; however, I feel it relates to the Hyper-V more. I recent migrated over all of our company's servers to virtualized instances running on a single 2012r2 standard host. Using the build-in Windows Server Backup utility, I created a backup-set for all four servers (1 SBS 2011 server and three supporting application servers). At one point later on, I needed to restore the SBS 2011 server from backup after a failed Exchange rollup. I restored the server to an alternate location and all is now running fine.

When I went to review my backup sets after running the Exchange Best Practice analyzer and having it report that there has not been a database backup in weeks. Windows Server Backup reports the newly restored SBS2011 server as being "offline"; however, it is not. It is running as it should and accepting requests as usual. I attempted to delete the backup schedule and recreate the set; however, Server Backup still thinks this server is "offline". This has me a bit worried as now either my Exchange is not recognizing that it is being backed up and transaction logs are not being written back or, worse yet, my virtual server is actually not being backed up at all.

Can anyone assist me with this issue?

WSB problems inside VM, Ntfs and Disk errors in System Event Log?

$

Wondering if anyone can help with backup problem I am having?

I have Windows 2008 R2 Datacenter running on two servers, with Failover Cluster Manager setup. I have a 2008 R2 VM guest, and the VHDs are via iSCSI from a HP P4330 storage server. The VM is just used for File Sharing, and I have tried to use Windows Server Backup inside the VM to backup up some of the Volumes (not backing up everything). It has 3x Data VHDs attached to virtual SCSI adaptors.

I have a similar setup on the same VHs, running Exchange 2010, and WSB seems to work fine (doing full system backup).

I managed to get WSM to successfully do a backup during the day, but the scheduled overnight backups keep failing.

I've had a search through forums and Google, but haven't found a fix yet.

These are the kinds of error messages I get:

Hello,

I am attempting to complete a backup on a W2K8 STD server to an external USB drive. The devices are 120GB Samsung S1 Minis. I cannot complete either on-demand or scheduled backups to these devices. When I attempt a backup an error is almost immediately generated and the backup stops.

The error displayed in WSB is:

"One of the backup files could not be created. Detailed Error: The request could not be performed because of an I/O device error"

A System event log error is also generated:

Hello,

What is the recommended steps to take to test a backup of a working Active Directory Certificate Authority? I want to do this in a safe way that does not interfere with the existing production PKI infrastructure. I looked for a good article on the subject but was unable to find anything that specifically answered this question. My set up is using Windows Server 2012 R2. Thanks in advance.

Restarting the appropriate services or the server resets all of the writers to stable, but the issue reoccurs on the next backup.

The only thing that has helped has been to stop the website (using 'appcmd stop site mysite'), running the backup, and then restarting the site. Then the backup succeeds.

Any suggestions?

i cant start the cluster service on my windows server 2012 , i have the following error  on my event viewer :

-

The Cluster service is shutting down because quorum was lost. This could be due to the loss of network connectivity between some or all nodes in the cluster, or a failover of the witness disk.
Run the Validate a Configuration wizard to check your network configuration. If the condition persists, check for hardware or software errors related to the network adapter. Also check for failures in any other network components to which the node is connected such as hubs, switches, or bridges.

-and this one also :

The Cluster service cannot be started. An attempt to read configuration data from the Windows registry failed with error '2'. Please use the Failover Cluster Management snap-in to ensure that this machine is a member of a cluster. If you intend to add this machine to an existing cluster use the Add Node Wizard. Alternatively, if this machine has been configured as a member of a cluster, it will be necessary to restore the missing configuration data that is necessary for the Cluster Service to identify that it is a member of a cluster. Perform a System State Restore of this machine in order to restore the configuration data.

i tried all cleanup command with no use , please i need your help to create that cluster .

Does Windows 7 Professional enable me to schedule multiple backup jobs for different backup locations and schedules?

I would like to create one backup job to backup my data partition (which is separate from my c:\ drive) and a c:\ disk image to an external USB drive daily, and another job to backup the same data and image to a network drive on a different schedule (weekly, for example).

Howto copy backup disk

I have a SBS2011 running Windows Server Backup every night to a 2TB disk which is formatted with NTFS and attached as a normal drive. The reason is that I'd like to be able to take offline copies of this disk and put in a safe location in case of catastrophy.

When I look at properties for the drive I see that 'Used space' is 1,24TB, but if I take properties of 'WindowsImageBackup' then 'Size on disk' is only 176GB.

I've changed folder settings so that I can see hidden and system files, but the total sum from the files I can see is 176GB (Which seems odd as there is at least 300GB data on the server). Are there more files hidden somewhere? And if so, can they be copied someway? Or is the backup locked to this physical disk?

Hi, I've run in to a problems and I'm not sure what the easiest way to get round it is..

I have a Hypervisor that is located on our site and basically is a backup Hypervisor, and we mirror a customers VM'S over to the backup machine via a VPN

My problem is that we setup the discs wrong... So we have 6 x 600GB drives setup as a RAID6 and these are formatted with BASIC volumes so we have hit the 2TB limit.... C: and a D: drive..

Our plan is to fit 2 x 300GB as a RAID1 and put the C: drive on there, then setup the  x 600GB as GPT and set that back up as the D: drive...

We have all the VM's replicating to the D: drive of the old server right now so if there was some way of doing a Bare Metal Backup of the whole lot then re do all the volumes and restoring it that would be great...., but I don't think a Bare Metal works quite like that as there is no way of setting the drives up before restoring....

Is that correct...?, and if so is there any other way we could tackle this...?

Regards
