Howto recover corrupt backup catalog

$

Hi,

I have a SBS 2011 running Windows Server Backup every night. It has a RAID disk where two disks failed a week ago. Since the probability that two disks fails at the same time should be close to zero I suspected the RAID-5 controller. So a replacement was ordered and installed on June 7. And then the machine rebooted, but I could see that one disk was still gone. I also noticed that the last backup was taken July 1 which was the day before the crash. But after some hour another disk stopped working which caused the entire server to die.

I got new disks and restored the server from an image backup I had from May 1, and it starts ok. But when I start Windows Server Backup it doesn't show any backups after May 1 even thou I know it has been running every night. Ok, so I need to recover the Backup Catalog from my backup disk

But if I try to run 'wbadmin restore catalog -backupTarget:X' then it says

"ERROR - The specified backup location could not be found or is not a supported backup storage location"

When I then look at the backup disk I can see that the there is catalog \WindowsImageBackup\<ComputerName>\"2015-07-07 114042". It therefore seems like Windows Server Backup for some reason started on July 7 when the machine started after RAID controller replacement, but then the catalog was crashed when the disk died.

The consequence of this is that if a disk failure occurs causing Windows Server to die abnormally while Windows Server Backup is running, then this may result in a corrupted catalog on the Windows Server backup disk meaning that all backups are lost!!

The backup disk should contain backups up to July 1. Is there some way to fix the corrupted catalog on the backup disk?

WSB Event ID 521 UD 30229 System State Replica Inconsistent DPM 2012 R2

Hello everyone,

I have having issues getting system state backups to work with DPM. I have spent a considerable amount of time trying to resolve this. Both DPM 2012 R2 and the 2012 R2 server have the latest service packs and updates. The server can successfully complete a wbadmin.exe start systemstatebackup -backuptarget:C: and all vss wirters are in state stable . After completing the wbamdin I go to the DPM console and start the system state backup. It fails in about 5 minutes. Then on the server i am backing up I run vssadmin list writers and many of the writers are in state 7 failed. If i reset the writers repeat the test I get the same results. Any ideas on what is going on?

Thanks!

OS : Windows Web Server 2008 R2

I manage 3 identical servers with the same OS and the same configuration.

One of the servers make full backups every night instead of incremental.

All three have the exact same backup settings, the other two work perfect.

3rd server use to make incremental backups, at some point something went wrong.

I can figure out what is the problem, any ideas ????

Howto validate a backup catalog on a backup disk

Hi everyone,

I have a SBS 2011 where I have been running Windows Server Backup every night to a local hard drive. I then had to restore the system drive from an image due to a disk failure. So when I start Windows Server Backup it doesn't recognize any backups done from when the image was taken until disk failed. But when I try to do  'wbadmin restore catalog -backupTarget:X' then it says

"ERROR - The specified backup location could not be found or is not a supported backup storage location"

1) The backup drive is shown if I do "wbadmin get disks". But does the disk have to be registred with Windows Server Backup in some way ?

2) Can I restore the backup catalog from a backup disk if the backup catalog on the system drive is ok ? Or do I have to delete it in order for 'wbadmin restore catalog' to recognize the backup disk catalog?

3) Is there some way to validate a backup on a backup disk?

Unable to restore from cataloged usb backup disk

I have a customer who's SBS 2008 server decided to crash last Saturday night. Fortunately, it was the OS partition that crashed and all of the data was on a different drive. And the disk didn't actually fail - it just somehow got corrupted to the point where Server 2008 would not load. I first attempted to fix it using the bare metal restore process. This appeared to work, but after completion, the server could not find the OS on the disk, no matter how much tinkering I did with the diskpart utility.

Since I knew I had 2 good backup usb drives and a good on-line backup, I decided to go ahead and re-install the OS and then restore AD from the backup. Unfortunately, this is their only server and there was not another domain controller to recover the domain info from. So I restored the OS with no problem and then attempted to do the recovery from the usb drive. This is where things got ugly.

I was able to import the catalog from the usb drives using the wbadmin utility. But after loading the catalog, the server backup would not restore from the disk. It would see the backup date, but when I tried to restore from any listed date, I got this:

So I went ahead and booted into DS recovery mode, hoping that it would work with the command line in wbadmin. It would not. I could run the wbadmin get versions utility and see the list of backups all day long, but when I ran wbadmin startsystemstaterecory, I could not get it to work to save my life. At this point, it was about 9 p.m.. With the customer's permission (and $500 of his money), we made the decision to call Microsoft and try to get some help. The guy I talked to essentially went through all the same steps I had already done and then told me I should try a bare metal restore because he couldn't get it to work either. Well I sure as heck was not going to start another bare metal restore at midnight. So we re-created all the user names, rejoined the machines to the new domain, etc. etc. We were there until after 3 AM. But we got it all put back together except for 1 guy's email. His outlook would not open under the old user profile to do an export to pst.

So this is where I stand right now - all is good with the folks in that office except for the one guy's old email. There is not an ost file on his old profile, so I am guessing that somehow, he was not working in cached exchange mode. I have downloaded a trial version of one of those edb to pst converters and it sees thousands of messages in his mailbox, but won't convert them without ponying up $400.

I have re-created their old server on a VM at my house in the hope that I can somehow figure out a way to get windows to read the backup off of that usb drive. If I can do that, I hope that I can restore their old AD onto the VM, then somehow log into his old email account and dump it out to a pst. So far, I am getting the same errors on the VM that I got on the live machine.

I know this is a mouthful, but I hope I have explained myself well enough that someone might have some ideas about restoring this backup.

Thanks.

Mike

Delete old backups when disk is no longer available

$

Hello all,

Regarding Windows Server Backup on Server 2008 Standard:

I understand that I can delete non-system state bakcups by deleting the shadow copies on the disks that store the backups. This is necessary for the "Total backups" counter and "Oldest copy" date to truly reflect the backups that are actually available.

My question is, is there a way to do this for disks that have been formatted and no longer have the original shadow copies to delete?

Any assistance would be much appreciated. Thanks

I have a Window server 2012 VM (vmware) act as a AD server. Recently the perform backup on the server with backup exec

The server will crashed when it is backup. I check the minidump and it shows BAD_POOL_CALLER with error code 0x000000c2 caused by vhdmp.sys.

I found a hotfix from this url https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/2807654, its similar to my issue but i'm not sure its relevant to my issue.

Windows Server 2008 R2 Essentials - System Restore can't find the backups

Title pretty much says it all.  Daily logs show backups running successfully every night for months.  Have something like 200+ backups spanning 800GB on a 1TB USB drive.  System now booting into Recovery mode (RecEnv.exe) but it refuses to see the backups.  Tried plugging and unplugging USB drive, tried multiple reboots, tried connecting the bare drive via a free internal SATA interface (BIOS sees it fine) but the backups are never found.  Logged in as Administrator with the correct non-default password.

Hooked the drive up as a USB device on a Windows 7 Pro machine - sees it fine.  Not thrilled by the idea of restoring over the network from a USB 2.0 device but that is my next option.

I've searched for and read the "Essentials" posts on this forum and it appears I'm not alone, the cut and paste answers aren't cutting it.

Anybody actually done a bare metal restore using the Windows created backups and the Windows restore method on 2008 R2 Essentials?  Any suggestions for Plan B?

Windows Server 2012 R2 Backups hang and take forever to complete.

I have a Windows Server 2012 R2 VM fully updated that takes much longer to complete backups than it used to.

For example if the backup starts at 5am the backup status details(in the GUI) say it didn’t really start until 5:20am and finished at 6:21am to backup ~325MB to another backup server. In comparisons another VM setup almost identically running on the same server takes under 10 mins to do the same backup.

If I run vssadmin list writers it hangs for over 10 mins then finally returns me a list of writers with all stable and no errors.

If I make changes to the backup schedule using the GUI wizard it takes again another 20mins to “Modifying existing schedule”

I have tried the following.
1.Uninstalling the windows backup feature and reinstalling.
2.Doing all Windows updates
3.Restarting the server multiple times.
4.Tried starting in safe mode, but windows backup doesn’t run in safemode.
5.The server has no other 3rd party software on it(AV or backup for example)

I saw in another thread about registering DLLs or VSS writers but it didn’t come to that and I don’t know how.

Does anyone have any ideas on how to fix this problem?

Thanks
Chris

Howto copy backup disk

$

I have a SBS2011 running Windows Server Backup every night to a 2TB disk which is formatted with NTFS and attached as a normal drive. The reason is that I'd like to be able to take offline copies of this disk and put in a safe location in case of catastrophy.

When I look at properties for the drive I see that 'Used space' is 1,24TB, but if I take properties of 'WindowsImageBackup' then 'Size on disk' is only 176GB.

I've changed folder settings so that I can see hidden and system files, but the total sum from the files I can see is 176GB (Which seems odd as there is at least 300GB data on the server). Are there more files hidden somewhere? And if so, can they be copied someway? Or is the backup locked to this physical disk?

Hey everyone,

We have a Windows server 2003 box that recently cannot be backed up by backup exec 2010...I isolated the issue but cannot seem to figure out how to get shadow copies to diaplay correctly in the C drive properties (Shadow Copies tab)...is there anyway to rebuild the shadow copies without reinstalling the OS? this server is in a production environment and cannot be rebooted right away...I noticed that the service "Microsoft Software Shadow Copy Provider" was stopped so I started it and set it to 'Automatic' and just for the record "Volume Shadow Copy" service is started and set to automatic...any info on this would be greatly appreciated...please see screenshot below for the error I am getting....Thanks a million everyone!

Keep size of Win7 FILE backups in check automatically?

$

I have Windows 7 Backup utility set to backup just one directory of files to another location (long story as to why, suffice it to say that's all that needs to be backed up on this machine).

How do I keep the target directory from growing infinitely huge?  I would ideally like to keep a one-week rolling window of these backups in the target/backup directory and have it automatically prune those backups that are older than a week.

I don't see where the Windows Backup tool lets you specify that option (it has some options about managing sizes in regards to IMAGE backups--but not file backups)...and I can't find any script out there that would seem to be suited to the job (I would be happy to have a Task Manager job run every night to prune backups older than a week)--whatever works!!!

Any ideas or suggestions?
