4TB RAID5 backup fails to network storage

$

I have a freshly built and fully updated Server 2012 R2 Standard GUI 3.62TB GPT RAID 5 (3x2TB +1HS). It is currently just setup as a base configuration with no Domain, DNS or DHCP configured, no major apps loaded and no databases. The only role that is loaded is Hyper-V. I would like to make a backup to my network share (UNC Path \\server\shared folder) (also server 2012 R2) as I have done with many previous builds. Those previous builds were also RAID 5 configurations on the same hardware, but with 3x1TB they fell below the 2TB MBR limit and thus were formatted as such. The actual data portion of the source server is 32.3GB and the destination network drive has 1.32TB of free space. The destination share is also formatted GPT. Both source and destination report as 512e (fsutil fsinfo ntfsinfo x:). When I attempt to back up it fails because VSS does not have enough space to create the shadow copy.  That would seem to suggest that my source is where the problem is. To that I would concur since it is the only thing that is different from my previous successes. The source drive has a 3.63 system partition, 300MB Recovery partition, a 99MB EFI Sytem Partition, and a 128MB Reserved partition (hidden).

Why is VSS failing? Event Log error code 0x80780119. Do I need alter the size of one of the unlettered partitions?

Thank you in advance.

PS: This same failure occurs on a 2x4TB RAID 1 build I am testing right next to it. So the commonality here is that both source systems are Svr 12R2 Standard GUI with no roles or apps (other than Hyper-V), w/ 4TB RAID arrays formatted GPT trying to do a server backup to a UNC path on the same destination server.

Windows Server 2012 Backup NOT RESPONDING

Sometimes, the Windows Server backup hangs at about mid-way through the entire backup process. Either manual or scheduled backup. It doesn't appear "frozen" as everything else seems to respond when clicked on. What seems confusing is that sometimes it works. I do not do anything else on the system as it is only used as database server via Hyper-V where database files are accessed in the guest OS of the virtual machine.

Current setup:

Dell PowerEdge T110 Tower

Intel Xeon E3-1220 v2 3.10Ghz

4GB DDR3 RAM

Starting Windows 7 Backup : Server execution failed(0x80080005) ????

A MSFT asked me to post here and here is a link to my original post and some troubleshooting already done.
http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/w7itprogeneral/thread/8669451c-772e-4bb4-91b0-9b089bf5c2cd/

My original first post in that forum:
Running a Sony VGN-NS140E laptop with Windows 7 Home Premium x64. This was a "clean" install versus an upgrade install. When I try to "Set up backup" under "Backup and Restore" I get an error "The backup application could not start due to an internal error: Server execution failed(0x80080005)". I am running Comodo x64 Internet Security (Firewall, AntiVirus, AntiSpyware) and am not running a system registry cleaner or optimizer in the background, although I have run CCleaner as a registry cleaner in the past. I do not know if this is a new or old problem as this is the first time I tried to use Windows Backup. I did try starting both Volume Shadow Copyservice and Microsoft Software Shadow Copy Provider service , they both successfully started but Windows Backup still produces this error. Thank you in advance for your help.

Problem still occurs, thanks for your interest.

Volume Shadow Copy Service error: Unexpected error CreateFileW(\\?\GLOBALROOT\Device\HarddiskVolumeShadowCopy1\,0x80000000,0x00000003,...). hr = 0x80070001, Incorrect function.

Creating a restore point fails. The following application error is logged:

Volume Shadow Copy Service error: Unexpected error CreateFileW(\\?\GLOBALROOT\Device\HarddiskVolumeShadowCopy1\,0x80000000,0x00000003,...).  hr = 0x80070001, Incorrect function.

Operation:
   Processing PreFinalCommitSnapshots
Context:
   Execution Context: System Provider

Before creating the restore point the vss writers are all in a stable state:
vssadmin list writers

There are no corrupt shadow copies:

vssadmin list shadows
vssadmin delete shadows /all
No items found that satisfy the query.

I also removed all hidden storage shadow copies in the device manager.

Printer server backup.

Hello all,

I just recently installed our companies first print server on a server 2012 r2 box. Now that everything is up and running I need to find a way to backup the server incase it decides to bomb out.

My Director wants me to  attempt a backup of the server on a desktop computer using software like AppAssure. I have been scouring the internet trying to find out if this is even possible but have come up empty handed.

I just need something that I can periodically back up the server onto and will be able to be plugged it in in the case the printer server fails and use this as the temporary print server until I can repair the primary server.

Any help you guys could share with me would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Documentation on restarting NPS and IIS Config writers in failed state

$

We are using DPM 2012 to protect several servers.  Periodically (one to two times per week), VSS writers will get in a failed state.  Rebooting the server always clears up the issues but it seems to me that there should be a way to restart services or processes to re-initialize the writers.  For example, when the SQL Server writer is in a failed state, you simply restart the SQL Server VSS Writer service and the issue is fixed most times.  Rebooting production servers two to three times per week just to clear up VSS issues doesn't make sense.  The ones I can't figure out how to fix without a reboot are these:

  1. NPS VSS Writer
  2. IIS Config Writer (IIS is not currently installed and iisreset doesn't fix it)

All the other writers are pretty easy to figure out, although I'm not sure why "System Writer" is really the Cryptographic service.

Anyone provide some clarification on what service to restart to clear up these VSS writers?

Any suggestions on how else to troubleshoot this issue?

WSB 2012 R2 Deleting All Backups When Disk Fills Up

$

I installed a dedicated disk in a Windows Server 2012 R2 server and configured Windows Server Backup to use it.  This works great until the disk fills up.  When it does, an error is logged "The shadow copies of volume \\?\Volume<GUID> were deleted because the shadow copy storage could not grow in time. Consider reducing the IO load on the system or choose a shadow copy storage volume that is not being shadow copied."

I've read that when the disk fills up, WSB is supposed to delete the oldest backup and continue, but it is deleting everything and starting over.

I've seen other posts indicating that this behavior was observed in Windows Server 2008 R2, but is broken in 2012+.  Is there some way to get automatic retention working in 2012 R2?

I have an Exchange 2007 running on a windows 2003 x64 standard server and I am having an issue with the VSS provider Microsoft Software Shadow Copy provider not starting. Any help on what I could possibly try and do would help.  I have tried re-registering the dll again but not luck on that any possibility on taking on from another server or registry.  I tried to do that but maybe i did the wrong steps.

I am getting initialization failed. Error 0x8004230f: The shadow copy provider had an unexpected error while trying to process the specified operation.

Bare metal restore completed - partitions wrong - Windows 2008 r2

$

  Hello,

I am testing a bare metal restore for a server that we have, the server runs on a Dell T420 with Perc RAID controller H710. I am testing a BMR on a different server Dell R410 with a RAID controller H600.. I have created the image from the original server and restore through the proper process (boot from windows 2008 r2 server disk \ choose restore \ select image and restore).. everything seems great, the restore completes as it should, goes to reboot, then the server seems to want to boot, but fails. The server then goes into recovery mode, where I break into CMD and start looking around.. What I noticed is that the partitions are wrong. image below..

I am trying to change the OS drive from F to C etc.. with no luck.. anyone have any suggestions?

        Thanks to all!

Windows 7 / Server 2008 R2 Bare Metal Restore 0x0000007B Stop Error

Hi,

I am tring to restore a Server 2008 R2 Standard Ed (full installation) RTM to a virtual machine, from a full Windows Server Backup image taken of a physical machine (Dell PE 2970).  All restores fine, and looks good until it tries to boot, when a Stop Error occurs, with the following error:

*** STOP: 0x0000007B (0xFFFFF880009A9928, 0xFFFFFFFFC0000034, 0x0000000000000000, 0x0000000000000000)

I believe the non-bracketed portion means "INACCESSABLE_BOOT_DEVICE".

There is only the System Reserved volume + a C: volume (system volume) + F: volume (DVD drive) on the original server.  It has had other volumes in it before, which are correctly listed in the MountedDevices registry key, but they have not been physically present for a while.

The virtual disk I'm trying to restore to is several GBs larger than the original virtual disk on the RAID controller (2 disks in RAID 1).

I can't figure out why the server isn't booting.  I've successfully restored Server 2008 machines from physical machines to VMs before, including servers using hardware RAID cards (e.g. Dell SAS 6/iR).  The only difference I can think of is that this is Server 2008 R2, this is a 2 proc server (I've tried several virtual proc numbers on the VM to no avail), and the RAID controller is PERC 6/i, and this is the first server I've tried with that particular RAID card.

Any help would be greatly appreciated, even if it's to point out that I'm looking in the wrong direction.

Many thanks,

Chris

Backup files without locking

Hi.

I need to backup UPD (User Profile Disk ). When I use robocopy, it locks vhdx file and user logs in with temporary profile.

Does robocopy has some flag that avoid locking files? Maybe somebody knows another tool for this purpose.

Wbadmin.msc on windows server 2012 fails to start in MMC with error wbengine.exe 0xc000005

Hi,

Since some time now i have not been able to use the Windows server backup tool anymore.

I cant really tell since when this started, but for all i know the windows server backup service worked fine.

I even created a backup schedule and it made some backups.

I am running this windows server 2012 Standard at home with just a couple of basic applications.

The server is used to host several websites with IIS, it manages my local DHCP and is used for locally shared storage.

There are no other security applications installed yet, because i am trieing to get rid of this error first. (so no symantec or whatever)

Since some time i am having trouble opening the windows backup snap-in.

When ever i trie to open the Windows server backup snap-in i get the following error:

A fatal error occurred during a Windows Server Backup snap-in (Wbadmin.msc) operation.

Error details: The Windows Server Backup service has stopped.

Close Wbadmin.msc and then restart it.

Whenever this error occures the folowing error is show in the windows logbook:

I tried to find simmilar cases over the internet but i cant seem to find a solution for the problem.

I already tried to remove and reinstall the Windows server backup feature, this did not help.

Is there anyone here that can help me find a solution for this problem ?

What is recovery check box in backup GUI?

Hello. In Windows Server 2012r2 backup GUI, under custom -> add items, in the select items window, there is a box that says “recovery”. This machine is a gen2 virtual machine. I have used backup on other 2012r2 servers and I don’t remember seeing it before. I have searched microsoft.com quite a bit and couldn’t find a reference to it. Can anyone explain what it is please? It is not selected when I pick bare metal. Why? Why is it not there in other instances of server backup on other machines? Are there any documents on Microsoft.com that explain this?
Thank you.
