I performed backup of a volume storing a database on my server using Windows Server Backup (WSB).
Now I have some old shadows that I would like to remove.
To do that, I use the vssadmin command with ShadowID that I'd like to remove:
vssadmin delete shadows /Shadow={9bae879d-979e-4ec0-b252-720de085d2bf}
However, I get the response
Error: Snapshots were found, but they were outside of your allowed context. Try
removing them with the backup application which created them.
Well, the application that created these shadows was WSB, and WSB GUI does not have command to delete old shadows.
How can I delete these shadows?
TIA

Hi,
I am using wbadmin for backing up virtual machines. Since one of the machines was big but contained some data which were not intended to be backed up(like test databases) we decided to attach another VHDX and move this type of data onto it.
The rest is intended for backup. This leads to problem - I cannot find way how to backup Hyper-v guest but exclude one VHD. Is it somehow possible?
Thank you.

Hello, I have a WD Sentinel DX4000 12TB unit and it’s recently been locking up.
After talking to WD Help they recommended I ‘Perform a Recovery’.
However every time I get to the last stage I get the error message ‘Error Code: 0x8007000d’

Could not reset the server to factory default settings
Your server was not reset to the factory default settings. Resolve the issue, and then restart the server recovery process.
Error Code: 0x8007000d

On the drive its says 'Recovery Started' but no progress number.
This drive has 9 years of my life on it and I am just a bit panicked.
Any help much appreciated,

Hi I wonder if anyone could help with this problem. I am using a fresh install of Windows 10 and keep getting these event ID's coming up. Does anyone know how to fix this?
Event ID 10016
The application-specific permission settings do not grant Local Activation permission for the COM Server application with CLSID
{D63B10C5-BB46-4990-A94F-E40B9D520160}
and APPID
{9CA88EE3-ACB7-47C8-AFC4-AB702511C276}
to the user NT AUTHORITY\LOCAL SERVICE SID (S-1-5-19) from address LocalHost (Using LRPC) running in the application container Unavailable SID (Unavailable). This security permission can be modified using the Component Services administrative tool.
Thank You for any help with this.

Hi,
I am using Windows Server 2008 R2 Standard, on IBM x3650.
One of the hard drive and RAID5 got crashed due to which we have freshly configured the RAID5 andchange that hard disk so in that case, can I restore the system state backup once 1 hard disk got changed and RAID5 got reconfigured?
Request you please reply as soon as possible.
Regards, Sudhanshu.
Hello All,
I have a HP server that I have just installed Server 2012 standard, SQL Server 2012 and Sharepoint 2013.
When I try to take bare metal backup I get the error: "The system writer is missing", I have tried the backup as the local admin and domain admin.
The backup will only work if I decide to back up C:, once I select "Bare Metal" or "System State" the backup fails.
I have tried this solution: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc734021.aspx but have not had any luck yet.
When I run the command "vssadmin list writers" I can not see "System Writer" listed.
How can I add/turn on the System Writer?
I have a freshly built and fully updated Server 2012 R2 Standard GUI 3.62TB GPT RAID 5 (3x2TB +1HS). It is currently just setup as a base configuration with no Domain, DNS or DHCP configured, no major apps loaded and no databases. The only role that is loaded is Hyper-V. I would like to make a backup to my network share (UNC Path \\server\shared folder) (also server 2012 R2) as I have done with many previous builds. Those previous builds were also RAID 5 configurations on the same hardware, but with 3x1TB they fell below the 2TB MBR limit and thus were formatted as such. The actual data portion of the source server is 32.3GB and the destination network drive has 1.32TB of free space. The destination share is also formatted GPT. Both source and destination report as 512e (fsutil fsinfo ntfsinfo x:). When I attempt to back up it fails because VSS does not have enough space to create the shadow copy. That would seem to suggest that my source is where the problem is. To that I would concur since it is the only thing that is different from my previous successes. The source drive has a 3.63 system partition, 300MB Recovery partition, a 99MB EFI Sytem Partition, and a 128MB Reserved partition (hidden).
Why is VSS failing? Event Log error code 0x80780119. Do I need alter the size of one of the unlettered partitions?
Thank you in advance.
PS: This same failure occurs on a 2x4TB RAID 1 build I am testing right next to it. So the commonality here is that both source systems are Svr 12R2 Standard GUI with no roles or apps (other than Hyper-V), w/ 4TB RAID arrays formatted GPT trying to do a server backup to a UNC path on the same destination server.
Hi,
I recently installed a WSUS server in the company I work for. It is fully configured and everything is working fine.
I've configured the WSUS to store the WSUS Content folder on the D: Drive and the WID Database on the C: Drive.
I am currently using the Windows Server Backup tool to backup the Full system (including System State, Bare metal recovery, System Reserved, C Drive and D Drive).
I just want a confirmation that this type of backup I'm using, is backing up both my WSUS content folder and more importantly my WID database. Or do I need to install an additional software like (SQL Server management studio) for me to backup the database?
I hope that I explained myself clearly enough for you to understand.
Thanks
Hi all,
I have a server running server 2012 r2 with the essentials role installed. There are several clients attached to the domain which are configure to regularly backup to the essentials server (on a 5TB ReFS volume) and the server also hosts redirected folders for the clients along with a fairly large (for a home anyway) collection of music and photos etc all stored on ReFS formatted volumes.
I have purchased a couple of 5TB external drives which I intend to use as additional backup drives which I will rotate so that there is always one in a location away from the house.
The issue I have is with configuring backups onto the external drives. As I see it I have two issues - ReFS drives do not allow incremental backups and I cannot configure a subset of client backups to be backed up onto the external drives. This means that the external drives will run out of space after a very small set of backups which limits their usefulness.
Any suggestions on how to best configure this sort of backup?
I'm currently using Windows Server Backup (in Server 2008 R2) to an attached HDD in an eSATA dock, which INCLUDES the Bare Metal Recovery AND System State. There is, and will be for the near future, very littl activity on my server and no significant daily changes. I'd like to be able to, for the time being, schedule the backup to occur only weekly, but Windows Server Backup doesn't seem to provide that option. Currently the backup is scheduled to occur daily, but I've only been mounting the disk weekly. This causes six days of "Backup Failed" error messages, and I'm afraid that I may not be getting everything that I need when the weekly backups occur.
I also have two Win 7 computers backing up the same way, but Win 7 provides for a WEEKLY option. Is there any way to properly schedule weekly backups on my server???

Hello,
I would like to solve our issue which bothers us for a few months now. We have advanced server infrastructure. These issues happens on completely different configurations/ brands of servers. One is HP microsver GEN8 with Samsung 840 pro as system disk and 4x raid 10 with WD raptor, b120i controller, which is used as domain controller. The other one is HP ML10v2 with Samsung 850 evo SSD disk B120i controller, and the last one is IBM x3650 m2 with 8x 15Krpm sas drives and MR10i MEGARAID controller, these both servers are in WORKGROUP, out of domain.
All servers are backed up via DPM server, which is running virtualized on third X3650 M2. DPM virtual server, nor hyperv X3650 server (and another 6 virtual servers) HAVE NO PROBLEMS AT ALL with backup. Also we backup via vssadmin script running early in the morning on WDmycloud device.
The issue is simple - vss is going to hang. It happens in one day or 2-4 days sporadically. First We can detect it via DPM system center not able to create recovery points. Then I open cmd "vssadmin list providers" and it correctly lists providers Immediately after I run vssadmin list volumes and service hangs forever at :
C:\Windows\system32>vssadmin list providers
vssadmin 1.1 - Volume Shadow Copy Service administrative command-line tool
(C) Copyright 2001-2013 Microsoft Corp.
Then if I try to open: windows server backup, Shadow volume configuration (after opening error 0x80080005: server execution failed), dpm backups, vssadmin just wont work.
I tried following:
restart VSS - service will hang at stopping state. After force closing service via "taskkill /f /pid" it will automatically restart, but still not working
restart VSS and associated services with reregistering writers via this script - http://serverfault.com/questions/435319/server-2008-sp1-vss-writers-not-responding - wont work - VSS service will not stop, nor swprv (microsoft software shadow copy provider) - cannot stop service
force killing swprv service with taskill - first I find service with sc queryex swprvm then taskkill /f /pid. THen taskkil reports - There is no running instance of the task.
Tried tips in this thread - https://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/windows/en-US/f7bef308-6e84-485e-ac19-6231e2f89e08/windows-server-2008-r2-vss-errors?forum=windowsbackup - not working. Disabling SQL writer wont help.
Also tried list writers with DISKSHADOW - it hangs same way
The only solution which helps is - reboot the server. But I don't think its solution. I cannot reboot servers during work hours.
After reboot, vssadmin list providers / volumes / shadows works flawlessly until next hang.
Any solutions ?

Hello.
I use system backup windows 2008 r2. This systems allows you to backup to two discs at the same time as i think. I set it up to make it to an internal disk and to usb external disk (volumen not dedicated), but always does to one of them and shows me that there is ready a backup in progress and therefore not performed i the other.
What happen?
Thanks.
