System state backup

$

I am trying to configure a scheduled system state backup on a Windows 2008 R2 server using the Windows server backup tool. The backup creates a WindowsImageBackup folder on a backup volume using VSS copy, I thought for System state backup Windows backup will create a flat backup file with the bkf extension and not doing image backup. Any idea why this behavior happening for system backup?

Thanks

Incremental and Full backups using WBADMIN and Task Scheduler in Server 2008 R2

I'd like to create an automated rotating schedule of backups using wbadmin and task scheduler, which would backup Bare Metal Recovery; System State; Drive C: and D: to a Network Share in a pattern like this:

  • Monday - Incremental, overwrite last Monday's
  • Tuesday - Incremental, overwrite last Tuesday's
  • Wednesday - Incremental, overwrite last Wednesday's
  • Thursday - Incremental, overwrite last Thursday's
  • Friday - Incremental overwrite last Friday's
  • Saturday - Full, overwrite last Saturday's

I need to use the wbadmin commands within the Task Scheduler and do not know any of the required Syntax to make sure everything goes smoothly, I do not want to do this through the CMD.

Dear Server Expert,

We are using windows server 2012 standard. Currently, I would like to create s schedule of backup, however the windows backup schedule is very limited in options. May I know whether any options:

1. to configure full or incremental backup daily, weekly, etc

2. send email notifications after backup done.

THanks

Server 2012 R2 64bit, Event ID 3, Source Filter Manager, Process ID 4

Hello,

There is always some errors events when doing windows server backup even after several times reboots, as below:

"Filter Manager failed to attach to volume '\Device\HarddiskVolume192'.  This volume will be unavailable for filtering until a reboot.  The final status was 0xC03A001C."

The volume number are different, the process ID is always 4 and thread ID is 4444 or 6708.

I have searched on Internet and Microsoft forum, only found the answers about Windows Search service, but actually I already removed this service.

And, already installed all the hot-fixes.

Hope somebody has solution for it.

Best regards.

Bill

Hyper-V Backup over SMBv3 with VSS

Hi Together

I try to take a backup of Hyper-V VMs (Windows Guests) using VSS.

Infrastructure:
HP ProLiant SE326M1 Shared Storage (Win Server 2012 R2) using SMB 2x HP DL380 G6 Hyper-V Servers (in Failover Cluster) The 3 Servers are Connected directly using 10 GBit/s.

Failover, Live-Migration, etc. works all without problem.

To be sure VSS works, I followed the steps described here on the storage serverhttps://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/jj612865(v=ws.11).aspx

-> A mistake on my side by configuration the storage is possible, but I don't know what i did wrong :(

 Problem:
- If I try to perform a shadow copy (using DISKSHADOW) of a Hyper-V vServer operating on the SMB Storage, I got this error: the component microsoft hyper-v vss writer was not found in the writer components list.

- If I move the SAME VM to the local storage on the server (so the server is also not active in the Failover = Standalone VM) It works with the exact same commands.

The command vssadmin list writers don’t shows errors for the Hyper-V VSS Writer. The machines are up to date and rebooting don’t changes anything.

I hope some one has an idea :)

Error: Snapshots were found, but they were outside of your allowed context

I performed backup of a volume storing a database on my server using Windows Server Backup (WSB).

Now I have some old shadows that I would like to remove.

To do that, I use the vssadmin command with ShadowID that I'd like to remove:

vssadmin delete shadows /Shadow={9bae879d-979e-4ec0-b252-720de085d2bf}

However, I get the response

Error: Snapshots were found, but they were outside of your allowed context.  Try
removing them with the backup application which created them.

Well, the application that created these shadows was WSB, and WSB GUI does not have command to delete old shadows.

How can I delete these shadows?

TIA

Les

What is at risk on a stolen USB backup drive?

My client has a one year old Server 2012 R2 running native Windows backup to external USB backup drives.  Bitlocker is NOT enabled for anything on this server.  A backup drive has been stolen and I am trying to find out what data is available to someone looking at the drive without access to the server itself. I am assuming that the thief does not know the server password or details of how the server was configured with drive letters, etc. What concerns should I have regarding the data on the backup drive?

Thanks!

One of our windows 2008 server is having TLS Version 1.2 Protocol Not Enabled vulnerability. Can someone help me to close this vulnerability.

Details of the vulnerability

Summary:
The remote service encrypts communications but does not have TLS 1.2 enabled.
Details:
TLSv1.2 is not currently enabled on a service that currently supports SSL/TLS traffic. Due to recent security concerns with encrypted protocols, device and application owners are advised to ensure that their systems and applications support version 1.2 in preparation for future efforts to eliminate use of TLSv1.0 and v1.1.

Do Not Trust WSB Logs/Events: VHDX File restores as zero size from Windows Server Backup

$

On Windows 2012 Server Host Machine:

I had occasion to restore a 118 GB VHDX from backup. However, although it shows in the WSB Recovery Wizard, and neither the Event Logs or the Windows Backup Log Files show any errors, the file restores as zero size. I tried from several previous days' WSB backups as well.

The file is a *.VHDX that is mounted and shared for all machines on my network. It is not attached to a virtual machine.

WSB is set up to backup the Hard Drive letter of the partition the VHDX is stored in (along with a few other files).

When I recover that partition from WSB, the other files restore fine, but the VHDX is restored as size=0. All the VMs (on other partitions) seem to restore OK.

I also had an external Wbadmin backup where I backed up that VHDX file explicitly instead of using the drive letter, and it restored fine.

If I have to backup VHDX files explicitly, then fine. But WSB should not list a file as backed up successfully and available for restore if it cannot, in fact, be restored. I have to wonder if there are any other files that will not restore either. Also, the log files (C:\Windows\Logs\WindowsServerBackup\Backup-dd-mm-yyyy_hh-hh-ss.log) should have reported this problem, rather than record success as "Backup of volume T: succeeded."

The only thing I can think of at this point, is that perhaps it remained locked by a network machine somehow. Even still, WSB should have backed it up in a crash consistent state, or at least give a warning or error.

I review my backup logs and events regularly and there was nothing to indicate any issue at the time of backup. Obviously, WSB is not capable of reliably reporting success and failure, and cannot be trusted.

Can anyone shed any light on this?

Thanks,

Bob.

Windows backup cannot see USB flash drive.

Hi,

I wanted to use Microsoft's default backup feature however, it cannot see the USB flash drive.

I check in "My Computer" and the flash drive is present, accessible and writable. Why would Windows Backup not see it? Are there pre-requisites for the drive?

Machine: Sony Vaio upgraded from Windows 7 Home Premium to Professional using Microsoft Anytime.

Thanks!

Server 2016 TP5 - Cannot restore bare metal backup from network Shared Directory.

I'm Using Windows Server backup.

I think there's a bug in the bare-metal restore  (Re-Image) Process in server2016TP5

I have created a Bare-Metal backup from Windows server 2016tp5, into a network shared folder.

The restore (Re-Image) process is loading the installation media, choose repair, and restore the image from the network.

what I did: Loading the Server2016TP5 ISO (Bootable USB), and trying to connect to the shared folder, It failed to connect to the server with the following error: "A specified logon session does not exist. It may already have been terminated (0x80070520)"

I get the same error for Hyper-V Virtual computer, and a Bare Metal (Physical) Server.

Why I think it is a bug ?

I tried to Bare-Metal restore the 2016TP5 with ISO of 2012R2, with exactly the same process (Same network account), it finds the backup files, but I get different error because it can restore Windows 2012R2 only (That error indicate that the backup data is accessible to the 2012R2 Re-Image process

I Also Try to bare-metal backup an restore 2012R2, on the same shared folder (Same account), It worked great on virtual, and Physical system.

can anyone confirm ?

did I do something wrong here ?
