I performed backup of a volume storing a database on my server using Windows Server Backup (WSB).

Now I have some old shadows that I would like to remove.

To do that, I use the vssadmin command with ShadowID that I'd like to remove:

vssadmin delete shadows /Shadow={9bae879d-979e-4ec0-b252-720de085d2bf}

However, I get the response

Error: Snapshots were found, but they were outside of your allowed context.  Try
 removing them with the backup application which created them.

Well, the application that created these shadows was WSB, and WSB GUI does not have command to delete old shadows.

How can I delete these shadows?

Hi Folks,

I'm trying to run a backup on one of my 2012 DC's using wbadmin's -allcritical switch. The backup is being directed to a network share on a Netapp. The machine is a VM running on VMWare, however, other physical 2012 servers are able to backup to this Netapp successfully. The syntax being used is:

wbadmin start backup -backuptarget:"\\fileserver\VM Backup\MYDC\1st" -include:c: -allcritical -vssfull -quiet > "c:\scripts\Server Backup.log"

Strangely, the 350 MB 'System Reserved' partition auto-created during the Windows install seems to back up and copy fine, but the C: drive will not. I have tried directing the backup to a different network share with the same result. I have wbadmin running sucessfully on 5 other 2008\R2 servers (also VM's running from the same VMWare server) against the same network share.

Any ideas on this? I'm not really finding much on it I'm afraid. Thanks for any help,

The error window is popped up once trying to start cluster service with the domain admint user. It says: Windows could not start the Cluster Service on Local Computer. Error 1053: The service did not respond to the start or control request in a timely fashiion. The Server 2012 R2 is installed in this PC. The capture is attached for the refernce. The cluster is created from Failover Cluster Manager per the procedures from MS website.

Please note, we create this cluster in order to Deploy Always On availability groups in SQL 2016 that requries to work with Vedio survanlance system. 

What would be the cause of this issue? How to fix? Please advise.

We have an AD forest with one domain and 17 2008R2 DC's. We recently had a system partition fail on an important DC that was also doing some file and application serving. We'd been using Arcserve backups and also doing a Windows Server backup of the system volume and System State.

When attempting a recovery, I ran into a Microsoft article (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/249694) that states that "If there are other healthy domain controllers online for the domain, we recommend that you do not perform a restore at all. Instead, perform a new installation of Windows on the destination computer and run the Active Directory Installation Wizard (Dcpromo.exe), to make the installation a replica in an existing domain."

Can you tell me whether there is currently a Microsoft-approved procedure to restore a DC's system drive (with programs, registry setttings, etc., that would be lost with a new install)? Or is a fresh installation and reinstallation and reconfiguration of settings and programs followed by DCPromo the only official way?

When running Windows Backup on Windows Server 2016, it is generating an Application Error with Event ID 513 with the following message.  The source is CAPI2.

I don't know what folder it would have problems accessing.  The rest of the backup seems to run OK.  Anyone have any ideas?

Hi Guys,

Normally when we do an authoritative restore, we open the Command prompt and perform the following steps

Ntdsutil > Activate instance NTDS > Authoritative restore

Now most of the forums say the command is "restore database", but when I tried it on 2012 and 2016 server, it says the that "Error parsing Input - Invalid Syntax"

It does not list the command in the help section as well.

Running an old Server 2003. ( I know its not advised, but we are)

So hard disk completely fails over the weekend and we restore everything from backups fine.  One slight thing is that reactivation is required (because added a tape drive and a LAN card. 

So activation doesn't work over the internet - server not there.  Phone up and of course I'm told its not supported any longer.

I saw on another forum the for another product that it could be possible that the server address is different, if you modify hosts file or DNS its possible to activate.

I was hoping that someone might know the server address used for activation that might have legacy ones.  I am really not sure how it works though so maybe this is not possible.

Any other suggestions would be more than welcome otherwise I will have to resort to a crack / unlicensed product key (or upgrade) aren't I?

After the Windows 10 version 1803 upgrade on April 30, 2018, my System Image Backup keeps failing withe two messages. "The backup failed" "The RPC server is unavailable (0x800706BA)".

Note that the System Image Backup worked before the upgrade. The upgrade completed OK and I have not found any other issues.

I checked that =1= The RPC (Remote Procedure Call) service in Services is active and running and =2= the DCOM (Distributed COM) is enabled. There used to be a SYSTEM disk when I did the defrag, the defrag does not show the SYSTEM disk in version 1803.

Is it a bug, or is there a fix or should I try the Image Recovery (that might fail as well).

I am using wbadmin for performing baremetal backup. Planing to schedule daily, weekly and monthly.

However Wbadmin tool not having any option to do it. wbadmin tool allowing me to do only daily backup. There is no feature available to do multiple schedule.

I need to set up a scheduled backup, I know I need to use task scheduler and wbadmin to do that, but having trouble setting it up:(

I want to run a Full VSS server backup (System reserved partition, drives C,D,E, BMR, System State, Host Component and one VM). Run it weekly, keep last 4 weeks of backups.

I want to run a full one on Friday night, then incrementals from Saturday till Thursday.

Then run 4x times, but with 28 days retention, so it would always keep last 28 days of backups.

Could you please help me with setting this up?

i was wondering if someone could help. 

I receive an error message in event viewer saying: 

"The backup operation that started at (---------------) has failed with following error code '0x80780179' (an error occurred while writing to the backup target). Please review the even details for a solution, and then rerun the backup operations once the issue has resolved' 

Details 

ErrorCode 0x80780179, ErrorMessage %%2155348345. 

The backup did originally work. I have checked that the client hasnt used a different USB port to what they normally use (which they haven't). I have also changed vs shadow copy from manual to automatic and still no luck.

can any of you provide any possible solutions - this is rather urgent as we need to ensure that a database is backing up.

We had HP Storagework EVA 4400 (SAN) that contained the data for use on 3 servers.   

Due to "unauthorized" access, the EVA4400 configuration got deleted which caused all the data loss on that storage.

How could we get the data back or do we have to restore the data back from our Symantec Backup Exec?

We have a problem with 1 of our domains, we want to install our backup tool from Acronis with Exchange application. Herefore we need to login as domain admin. This shows us the following error:

Cannot collect the metadata of Microsoft Exchange Server

We contacted Acronis, they told us; the problem is using the command: WHOAMI /GROUPS does not show any domain groups.. This is why Acronis software thinks our domain admin is not member of the organization management.

Somehow this does not work on any of the servers in this domain. We have more domains where this command DOES show domain groups.. We can't find anything different in the domain.

We are configured windows server 2008 machine as our domain controller. And the backup was configured for system state with windows backup. It is going to a share folder. It was working perfectly but now it is getting an error says that "The backup operation that started at '‎2011‎-‎11‎-‎22T20:00:06.743827000Z' has failed with following error code '2155347997'. Since some time now i have not been able to use the Windows server backup tool anymore.

I cant really tell since when this started, but for all i know the windows server backup service worked fine.

I even created a backup schedule and it made some backups. 

I am running this windows server 2012 Standard at home with just a couple of basic applications.

The server is used to host several websites with IIS, it manages my local DHCP and is used for locally shared storage.

There are no other security applications installed yet, because i am trieing to get rid of this error first. (so no symantec or whatever)

Since some time i am having trouble opening the windows backup snap-in. 

When ever i trie to open the Windows server backup snap-in i get the following error:

A fatal error occurred during a Windows Server Backup snap-in (Wbadmin.msc) operation.

Error details: The Windows Server Backup service has stopped. 

Close Wbadmin.msc and then restart it.

Whenever this error occures the folowing error is show in the windows logbook:

I tried to find simmilar cases over the internet but i cant seem to find a solution for the problem. 

I already tried to remove and reinstall the Windows server backup feature, this did not help. 

Is there anyone here that can help me find a solution for this problem ?

When trying to backup Windows Server 2012 using built-in Windows Server Backup tool I get the following error:

The backup operation that started at '‎XXX....' has failed with following error code '0x80780179' (An error occured while writing to the backup target.). Please review the event details for a solution, and then rerun the backup operation once the issue is resolved.

The event details I looked at doesn't provide any help other than the ErrorMessage=%%2155348345

I searched everywhere but the solution eludes me. 

Can someone please help me resolve this?

I need some help with the below errors as we have tried taking it up with Veritas, but to no avail.  On Windows Server 2016, using Veritas Backup Exec, the backup will run once after restarting the guest VM's, and restarting the Hyper-V Management Service on the host.  After that the scheduled backups fail.

We ran the "vssadmin list writers" command with the following results:
