Win 2012 R2 application server attacked with ransom software.  re installing windows and when accessing the Bare Metal backup to recover we are finding that it will not allow recovery of System volumes and the Active directory which I believe it is supposed to accomplish. Anyone have experience with this?

Hello,
when I try to make a backup, I get an error like in the subject. I can backup individual drives, but I can not back up the system state. I made the sfc / scannow command - no problems found. I performed a scan and defragmentation of all disks - all ok. I made the command vssadmin list writers - all: no errors. Only when you select the system status option is this problem reported.
Please help.

Windows 2008 R2 state backup fails with various errors

Since a few years we are using DPM to backup our servers but since some time the system state of the server where DPM is installed started to fail.

I was trying to do system state backup using command line windows backup:

wbadmin start systemstatebackup -backupTarget:C:

and it fails every time with different error (last 5 tries):

1. Error in backup of C:\Windows\winsxs\Manifests\x86_microsoft-windows-w..pdateclient-activex_31bf3856ad364e35_7.6.7600.256_none_09f272fb52ab0c3f.manifest during read: Error [0x80070002] The system cannot find the file specified.
2. Error in backup of C:\Windows\System32\msmpeg2vdec.dll during write: Error [0x80070002] The system cannot find the file specified.
3. Error in backup of C:\Windows\System32\catroot\{F750E6C3-38EE-11D1-85E5-00C04FC295EE}\Microsoft-Windows-WinMan-WinIP-Package-TopLevel~31bf3856ad364e35~amd64~~7.1.7601.16398.cat during read: Error [0x80070015] The device is not ready.
4. Error in backup of C:\ during read: Error [0x80070005] Access is denied.
5. Error in backup of C:\Windows\System32\ActionCenter.dll during write: Error [0x80070002] The system cannot find the file specified.

That's a Windows 2008 R2 server with DPM and OM servers installed.

The system state backup was doing fine for 2 or 3 years and suddenly it just stopped.:/

Hi Team,

We have IBM Tivoli Storage Manager version 6.4 installed and observed large no of errors in backup of File servers . While checking the error logs found "Thumbs. dB" files on which read errors reporting. My File servers are Windows 2012 and i want to prevent creation of such files on server.

How do i prevent it? Is there any way i can restrict creation of file from Group Policy? Kindy suggest.

Thanks

TSM Backup Admin

wbadmin fails immediately and reports "Not enough storage is available to complete this operation"

I have three Microsoft Windows Server 2012 R2 Standard servers running on Dell PowerEdge machines that serve as Hyper-v hosts for my various virtual machines.   Each server has a scheduled backup similar to the following:

Notes:

  • Each scheduled backup is configured to be a "VSS Full Backup".
  • Some backups show the VMs as online and some show as offline.

The issue is that the backups will run for several days successfully and then will stop running.   After the backups begin to fail, I see the following when I open Windows Server Backup tool.

I also see Event 19 in the event log when the scheduled backup runs:

  • The backup operation attempted at '?2018?-?06?-?04T02:00:01.583169900Z' has failed to start, error code '0x8007000E' ('Ran out of memory'). Please review the event details for a solution, and then rerun the backup operation once the issue is resolved.

If I attempt to run the backup using the wbadmin command line, I see the following error:

  • Not enough storage is available to complete this operation.

If I sign out and then sign on, the issue is immediately resolved and I can see the backup history in the Windows Server Backup tool.   The backup will run again for several days until the issue occurs again.

The cycle of the issue on the three machines is very similar.  In other words, the backup will run successfully on all three machines for 2 days and then fail on all three machines and continue to fail until I sign in, sign out and then sign in.

Note: After verifying that the server backup is running with a sign in, sign out & sign in.  I typically sign out again.

Any ideas?

Using Robocopy to Copy Multiple AD User Files to a Shared Drive

$

Hello,

So I have seen many articles on how to copy one file to multiple computers, but I want to know just the opposite.

If I was wanting to copy multiple user data stored on local C drive of computers within my AD environment, can I simply move the data to individual users home directories that exist on a NAS?

Is there some way I can tie in Robocopy to a group of computer devices and run some commands?

I'm trying to find out if this is a singular process meaning one computer at a time or can I do it all at once.

TIA

Backup issue on Windows Server 2016 Essentials

Hello,

We have been having an issue for the last week with our Windows Server Backup failing on our Windows Server 2016 Essentials server.  It is failing with the application event ID 517.  The backup operation has failed with the following error code '0x807800AF' (The Volume Shadow Copy Service backup complete operation failed.  The backup backs up the EFI System partition, local disk with all the data, Bare metal recovery, but fails on the System state.  It says the Backup canceled.  System state backup was canceled.

The error in the windows server backup software is the Volume Shadow Copy Service backup complete operation failed.  A volume shadow copy service component encountered an unexpected error.

The server has been rebooted and we will get one working backup but the issue returns the following day.

I've got a Server 2012 Standard OS with failing backups (WSB.)

SEP 12.1.2 MP1 is installed.  E:\* is defined as an exception to all scans in SEP.  All VSS writers show 'no error.'

Here is the specific error within WSB:  Error in deletion of [E:\System Volume Information\EfaData\SYMEFA.DB] while pruning the target VHD: Error [0x80070020] The process cannot access the file because it is being used by another process.

This issue started after two weeks of successful backups, while running SEP 12.1.2.  After upgrading to SEP 12.1.2 MP1, I rebooted the server, then stopped and re-created scheduled backups, formatting the destination disk.  Manually running the scheduled scan from task scheduler worked once, but the scheduled backup failed that same night... same error.

I have an existing case open with Symantec... I just wanted to post this for other people, as this thread doesn't seem to provide a fix.

I am working with a client who is attempting to backup to a NAS device
The device is a linksys NSS6000 (Cisco device).

It’s a dual 1Gbit LAN device that supports CIFS / FTP and NFS transfers. It has only 1Gbit lan connected.
The device has 4 *  500 gb sata drives in raid 1  attached.
Cables go from cat 5 to fiber back to cat5. (The NAS  is located at a neighboring office) The switches are 1gbit.

Server is a win2k8r1 fully up to date.

When backing up to the NAS device, the following error occurs:

Running backup of volume Local Disk(D:), copied (86%).
Running backup of volume Local Disk(D:), copied (90%).
Running backup of volume Local Disk(D:), copied (94%).
Running backup of volume Local Disk(D:), copied (98%).
Backup of volume Local Disk(D:) completed successfully.

Backup stopped before completing.

Summary of backup:
------------------

Backup stopped before completing.
The process cannot access the file because it is being used by another process.

If we redirect the backup to a folder on a 2008 share, the backup completes successfully.
Only when backing up to the linksys NSS6000 does the error occur.

No other backup processes are writing to the NAS device so I can't understand why the process thinks the file is
being used by another process.

One thing we did notice that when the backup to the NAS device occurs, throughput is about 150 mbit average
On the 2008 server shares we successfully backup to, the through put is 500 mbit.  Not sure if that is important, but
might be worth mentioning.

The following event log entry was noted at the end of the backup.

The description for Event ID '519' in Source 'Microsoft-Windows-Backup' cannot be found.
The local computer may not have the necessary registry information or message DLL files to display the message,
or you may not have permission to access them.  The following information is part of the
event:'2009-05-12T10:13:31.617Z', '', '2147942432', '%%2147942432'

Any ideas?

Thanks..Michael

We perform full back up of our Windows 2008 R2 server every weekend on alternate locations at two different external hard disk. I am able to mount two vhd( two drives) as virtual disk and shows online but one of the drive shows not initialized when i mount it has read only checked. If I unchecked read only option the drive shows online but when I try to open the the drive I get "Files are corrupted or unreadable" .And also all the three drives are mountable only with read only unchecked.I have the same issue on both of my external disk. Please suggest a solution for this issue and also what would be the best recovery plan?

Windows Server 2012r2 produces many errors during VSS full backup

$

Hello,

I have a Windows Server 2012r2 running ADDS, DHCP, DNS and DFS - during overnight backup, I receive the following errors:

ID: 510 - ESENT ERROR - request to write to file to an abnormally long time (562 seconds)

ID 1014 - DNS Client Events - Name resolution timed out after none of the configured DNS servers responded

ID - 1006 - Group Policy - processing of group policy failed - Windows could not authenticate to the Active Directory service

ID 7011 - Service Control Manager - A timeout (3000 milliseconds) was reached while waiting for a transaction response from the client manager service

Also, during this time the server becomes very slow to near unresponsive. Important to note that these errors only produce themselves during the backup operation, and the backup operation does complete successfully.

I noticed that some of these strange issues started to appear after we started using DFS - this server replicates files to another server using DFS.

Windows Server 2016 Backup Server - Compacting Virtual Disks takes ages

I've seen and found similar post online and her but so far no one with an answer.

Windows Server Backup extremely slow while 'compacting the virtual hard disk(s)'
Compacting virtual hard disks

Running a Windows 2016 Server that has the hyper v role that I backup using the Windows Backup to backup the server to a local attached USB disk.

When I firstly create the backup job it takes quite some time because it needs to copy all the data, which is understandable. After that the incremental is done within a hour backing up 3 TB of data and 6 VMs, which is a great result.

Then after a while the backup disk is filling up and it will take for ever to finish a backup. Every day it will start to do a full and compacting the virtual hard which will take almost the whole day.

WBADMIN START RECOVERY: "error:a volume cannot be recovered to a critical volume"

$

Hi,

I am using Hyper V 2012 R2 Server, so no GUI.

My goal is to perform backups of the server utilizing "Windows Server Backup" feature

I was able to complete a backup and see the version with:

wbadmin get versions

Backup time: 9/27/2018 4:15 PM
Backup target: 1394/USB Disk labeled NewBackup(D:)
Version identifier: 09/27/2018-23:15
Can recover: Volume(s), File(s), Application(s)
Snapshot ID: {2d8fcca2-8668-4767-88be-9920f89946d6}

then, using the versionID, in my case, -version:09/27/2018-23:15

I used wbadmin start recovery

so my full command looks like this

wbadmin start recovery -version:09/27/2018-23:15 -items:c: -itemType:volume -backupTarget:d:

Then I get prompted if i wish to continue, I enter Y, then I get the error message

"error: A volume cannot be recovered to a critical volume"

Am I using the command incorrectly? Am I missing a fundamental understanding of this command or what Hyper-V Server 2012 R2 is capable of? Any help is appreciated.
