We have been backing up a Windows Sever 2012 R2 using Windows Server Backup
We have specified Backup with Bare Metal Backup, System State, System Reserved as well as the system disk and application disk.
This Backup was configured by the Domain Administrator and runs as a scheduled Task by SYSTEM.
When we recent tested the backup using the Restore to a new Machine, None of the User Accounts Restored. (C:\Users)
What are we doing wrong?

Hi,
I have been getting this error message on one of the server I monitor for the multiple days now. It appears to only be happening to only 1 of my backup jobs.
I have checked the application and system log on event viewer there doesn't seem to be anything that could be conflicting with the backup job. In addition, I have also tried stopping the backup schedule and creating it again.
The following error in the backup log is:
The backup operation that started at '2018-10-09T07:00:25.131017200Z' has failed with following error code '0x807800C5' (There was a failure in preparing the backup image of one of the volumes in the backup set.). Please review the event details for a solution, and then rerun the backup operation once the issue is resolved
One of our clients with a Windows Server 2012 R2 Essentials server is suddenly having an issue with the scheduled backups failing yet the manual backups succeed. This has appeared out of the blue and both my colleague and I are unable to determine what might be the cause. The following is the log when it fails...
.....
The description for Event ID 5 from source Microsoft-Windows-Backup cannot be found. Either the component that raises this event is not installed on your local computer or the installation is corrupted. You can install or repair the component on the local computer......
Does anyone have any clue what the problem might be and how to go about resolving it. All of the backup drives are new.
Hi..
I have taken backup using robocopy from server1 to server2... now i want to delete previous backup data in server2.. i mean i m scheduling a backup every day for testlog file... i need to delete the pervious backup in destination not in a source file.
i have tested using delage32 cmd but not worked.. could some one help me in..
We have recently installed Window 2008 and are receiving the following message:
Cryptographic Services failed while processing the OnIdentity() call in the System Writer Object.
Details:
AddCoreCsiFiles : BeginFileEnumeration() failed.
System Error:
Access is denied.
I have followed all of the posting that are listed and have made sure the necessary rights have been assigned to the c:\windows\registration file but hte "System Writer" will not show when running vssadmin list writers.
Please help.
Thank you.
I am now experiencing this on two different installations where Windows Server 2016 is the host operating system on Dell PowerEdge T620 servers with USB 3.0 interfaces running Windows Server backup.
The machines all host Hyper-V virtual servers.
I have been backing up using Windows Server 2016 Backup to external 8TB USB 3.0 drives. The FULL backups had been taking only about 4 to 6 hours and the incrementals were running in a matter of an hour or so.
Suddenly on two of my different customer installations the Windows Server backup is taking DAYS to run. After about 12 hours one my backups is at 27% of Volume 2 out of 3 volumes.
This all seemed to start AFTER installation of KB4457127 but I cannot say for sure.
I have tried different USB 3.0 external drives, even though the likelihood that two different facilities would suddenly both experience the exact same issue and it be a drive problem seemed unreasonable.
Anyone have any thoughts? Anyone else experiencing this?

Hi,
In one of the Server 2008 SP2 system writer is missing. I have below troubleshoots but still issue is there.
1) Restarted the "Cryptographic services"
2) Registered the DLL files
3) Rebooted the server.
4) Applied access to the files in %windir%\winsxs\filemaps\
Can anyone suggest what needs to checked to fix the issue.
Thanks in advance.

Is there a difference between
WBADMIN START BACKUP -allCritical -SystemState
VS
WBADMIN SYSTEMSTATEBACKUP
True or false? Sounds like to me they both perform a Bare Metal Recovery AS well as a system state recovery ( and system state contains users info)
Also I have WBADMIN START BACKUP as a scheduled task running every saturday 0300hr at drive path D,after the first backup is every successive backup either an incremental or differential backup? or is it a complete re-write of the existing backup in that path? Or an entirely new backup
I am concerned about drive space.
Thank you in advance.
System is non production, running server 2008 enterprise (localized in Dutch).
"Bare Metal Recovery" selected, backups scheduled daily using Windows server back-up.
Backup destination is a local disk, with plenty of disk space still free.
backups running fine up and until 6 june.
At that date we installed SQL server 2008 R2 and Advantage ADS (other database server).
I recently noticed that the backups have been failing since 6/6.
Investigation performed so far :
-> error message in backup wizard : "the system writer is not found in the backup"
-> confirmed that system writer is not in the writer list when doing vssadmin list writers in a cmd box.
-> found a gazillion articles on google indicating wrong permissions on %windir%\winsxs\Filemaps\*
reference article : http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2009272
most of these also mention problems with CAPI2 (cryptographic provider) but I see no evidence of that in my application log, only event ID 517 is present, indicating error 2155347997.
I follow the article instructions anyway and update file permissions but system writer is still not listed.
Then the article mentions that Event ID 8213, indicating permission issues, might be showing, but it's NOT.
registry key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\VSS\VssAccessControl is already on 1
-> NO log is created under C:\Windows\Logs\WindowsServerBackup\ during the backup attempt.
-> I was able to restore the winsxs\filemaps folder from the last successfull backup without any problem.
log file was created during that restore.
-> using vsstrace.exe I get this output repeating over and over.
There are error messages in there but I have no idea what they mean and searching the net doesn't give me anything :

notice that also the BITS writer is missing, but the others seem just fine ...
-> followed instructions in this article : http://briandrab.spaces.live.com/blog/cns!B69C8C4D664E3F01!252.entry?sa=609120164
moved all files under filemaps to a different folder but that didn't work either so i just restored them.
-> I probably could restore the backup from 6/6 completely and reinstall sql + ads, but I want to find out what is happening before I do that, I find not much info on the web over what mechanism makes the writers visible exactly.
This would be a lot of work with no guarantee that things don't break again.
At this point I welcome any suggestion, but i'd like to see some arguments as to why it would be a good idea, not just try this or try that, as I'm trying to understand the whole vss setup a little better.
UPDATE : BITS writer came back in stable state after reboot, so only system writer is still missing.
Hi All,
I am running Hyper V host on Win Server 2012 R2 with mixed guest VMs (2008, 2012). We keep facing a VSS issue as stated in the subject which leading to have failed Backup got he VMs through Windows Backup or even VERITAS Backup Exec.
When restarting the host or vmms.exe service, Hyper-V VSS Writer state becomes stable with no error and Backup job will run successfully.
I found below event in event viewer after running a Backup job from Backup Exec :

We have a client that refused to migrate his Windows 2003 R2 64bit server. The server have AD, DNS and Exchange on it and is installed on vmware VM.After the last restart the server started giving error STOP: 0x0000001e (0), it cant boot and you can`t start
save mode. Tried to recover it from backup, but even the last backup behaved the some way. Tried to repari it, tried chkdsk /r
There are no current minidump and enable loging did not generate txt into the windows directory. Sadly there is no manual procedure to recover this server and i`m not sure we will be able to rebuild it from scratch.
Does anyone know how to deal with a space in the folder name, I'm using "My Data" as the example:
wbadmin start backup -backuptarget:e: -include:c:\My Data
I get: Error - command syntax incorrect. Error: data. See command
The command syntax works fine of folder names with no spaces.
Guys , Am having a problem with my windows server backup , it retrieves an error backup failed"more data available"
the next day it performs the backup normally and so on
I backup on an external hard drive
IF anyone can help please
My server running windows server 2008 R2 seems to overwrite the newest backups which it has never done before. The server has been doing daily backups for years and its oldest vss copy is from the beginning of 2017, but ever since the server crashed on October 8th its started to overwrite the latest backups. The server shows a list of recent backups from this week starting on October 9th but I can only access the backups from October 12th to the 18th which indicates its starting to overwrite its latest backups. How can I change the backup settings to overwrite the oldest backups instead of the newest.
I also want to include that it has overwritten backups from not only October but also the past few months. So now there is a giant gap of deleted backups from 01/27/2018 to 10/12/2018, the only backups that the server has saved currently is from 01/01/2017 to 01/26/2018 and its latest backups from this week which the server has started to overwrite.
Hello all,
I’ve been struggling with one of the many VSS related problems during a backup operation on a 2008 R2 server from a third party software (it doesn't matter which one for the purpose of this).
I’ve already tried almost 99% of suggestions out there without getting a real solution so I dug down deep with vsstrace.exe and found out what’s happening:
…
[21:19:17.873 P:1BC8 T:2084 SECSECRC(1756) GEN] ENTER[CVssSidCollection::IsSidAllowedToFire]
[21:19:17.873 P:1BC8 T:2084 SECSECRC(1882) GEN] ExpandForVerification()
[21:20:11.576 P:1BC8 T:22B0 INCWRMPH(0875) WRITER] ENTER[CVssWriterImpl::Lock]
[21:20:11.576 P:1BC8 T:22B0 INCWRMPH(0875) WRITER] EXIT[CVssWriterImpl::Lock] Time spent: 00:00:00-0000; total: 0; HRESULT: 0
[21:20:11.576 P:1BC8 T:22B0 WRTWRTIC(2226) WRITER] Aborting due to timeout
…
Look at timestamps: the “ExpandForVerification” is freezing (21:19), so all the VSS writer timers (that where started before) reach the 60 sec. timeout (21:20) and the whole backup is aborted. The Application Log gets populated with SQLVDI and MSSQLSERVER errors, but those are the consequence, not the cause, I didn’t get any useful information about them.
Now there are (random) days when all runs well and the backup completes successfully. In such cases all ExpandForVerification operations are IMMEDIATELY (milliseconds) followed by other operations, all runs smoothly without time gaps and that should be the
normal behavior.
Unfortunately I could not find any documentation about these entries so my question is: what “SECSECRC” stand for? What’s happening during the ExpandForVerification event? What could freeze it? There’s a sort of “black
hole” in the log where I have no informations about what’s happening.
Any suggestions or documentation references?
As per this:
https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/2996928/backup-task-fails-with-a-time-out-error-in-windows it seems quite similar to my situation, but the hotfix is not available (no more available) for Server 2008, is there a mirror elsewhere? did someone tested
it?
Thanks!
