Dears,
I have 2 servers: Server 1 is Domain Controller and Server 2 is the Backup, they synchronize with each other. At the pass, 2 DCs run normally with windows server 2008 R2 for a long time (about 5 years). Recently, I upgraded the OS of 2 DCs to Windows server 2012 R2. After upgrading the OS, I upgrade 1 software (The Symantec Backup Exec System Recovery 9.x to Veritas System Recovery 18.x )at Server 2 (The Backup DC). After that, I found 1 problem: If have any change at the Server 1, the server 2 (The Backup) can not synchronize the change but If have any change at the Server 2 (The Backup), the Server1 still synchronize the change.
Anyone can help me to fix the problem.
Thank you very much.
Windows Server 2012 R2 Server Backup fails when tried to take System Image, Bare Metal Recovery backup using Windows Server Backup tool. I am trying to save the backup to a network shared folder. The Volume Shadow Copy and Microsoft Software Shadow Copy Provider services are set to Manual.
The error message : The backup operation failed because the Volume Shadow Copy Service operation to create a shadow copy of the volumes being backed up failed with following error code '0x80780021'. Please review the event details for a solution and then rerun the backup.
So far, I have tried the following:
1. Set the Shadow copy to use Maximum size as No Limit. (on both local C: drive and shared drive)
2. Ran chkdsk C: /f - and found no errors
3. vssadmin list writers - lists all the writers as No Error
4. Created 2 REG_DWORD entries in HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\SPP
CreateTimeout - 1200000 (decimal)
IdleTimeout - 1200000 (decimal)
Please let me know if I need to do anything else to resolve this issue. Any help is appreciated. Thank you.
Hi,
We have just installed a Windows 2016 Hyper-V server and I wanted to check if this version of Windows Server Backup can protect Hyper-V VMs running Windows 2008 R2 and later. I also wondered if it could back up a VM running Windows 2008, although this may not be necessary yet.
Thanks
Chris
Hello,
We are using windows server 2012 R2 as domain controller and exchange server 2013 installed on this server.
Today our server operating system crashed and stuck in restarting loop with the error code 0xc000021a.
We tried repairing system file, registry, ran sfc /scannow, chkdsk /f /r and many other things but nothing work.
Then we formatted c drive and tried to recovery from bare metal image which is on e drive that to failed.
Please provide some solution.
Thanks,
Feroz
I have tried to run a bare metal backup on 2 servers now. 2016 Server with Hyper-V with 1 VM(MS SQL) and an RD server with 2016 server. Both have failed.
So... I find it funny that there is a dedicated forum to Windows Server backup and what the hell am I doing wrong. Both servers throw and error something along the lines of: "
Backup of volume C: has failed. The requested operation could not be completed due to a virtual disk system limitation. Virtual hard disk files must be uncompressed and unencrypted and must not be sparse.
Is this telling me I need to move all VMs and RD's to a secondary volume?
Our architect specified servers for new AD forest and domain. ADDS is to be installed to D:\Windows\NTDS (not the default C:\Windows\NTDS). These are VMs and a cloud provider will be backing up the VMs by snapshot. I suspect the backups of the VMs will be trustworthy, but I always like to have my own Microsoft-specified and supported backup in my back pocket for when the complete disaster arrives - I'm still covered, even if the cloud provider fails.
In the past I've used the usual Windows Server Backup, ran a scripted backup that performs a System State Backup of C: (which would have contained C:\Windows\NTDS and all of Active Directory). But now I have to also back up D:\Windows\NTDS and System State Backup will not be backing up D:.
What is the recommendation?
Here is the essential working section from the scripted backup:
WBADMIN Delete SystemStateBackup -KeepVersions:1 -Quiet >> %MyLogFile%Notice that my script cleans up the destination volume E: to minimize the size of the backup and to ensure there is free space prior to starting the backup. WBADMIN does not have an equivalent "Delete" option for non-SystemStateBackup backups.

We have several smaller to midsized customers that have invested money in tape drives and tapes. They are using Symantec BackupExec on Server 2003 / 2008 and 2008 R2. Unfortunately, Symantec postponed Server 2012 support in their products many times already. This fact costs us many business opportunities to upgrade infrastructures to Server 2012.
DPM 2012 is good for larger customers, but less suited for smaller companies (and the DPM "philosophy change" of the backup procedures, compared to older tape based backup solutions is an obstacle as well.)
So we are looking for EASY backup solutions that support tape drives and server 2012. The "perfect" product for us would be just a tape driver and an extension to the integrated Windows Server Backup that would allow to store backups on tapes, the same way that Windows Backup allows backups to network shared folders.
Does anyone knows EASY backup software that provides this functionality? I'm also very interested in feedback from peoples that have successfully used such products on Server 2012 and are satisfied with them.
Thank you all in advance for any help.

Running Windows Backup on a Windows Server 2012 to a Network share
I think the backup is completing & is listed in ALL Backups but I see the message

This directory partition has not been backed up since at least the following number of days.

Since we have an old external tape backup drive on another server, data is copied to this file from the above server through robcopy every night.
To fix above issue, we need to do systemstatebackup for all DC. Right?
If we do schedule job "wbadmin start systemstatebackup -backuptarget:d -quiet" everyday, I've the following questions.
Q1: Can D:\WindowsImageBackup be rocopy to anohter drive for backup (eg. external HDD or tape)? Is it safe?
Q2: Running "wbadmin start systemstatebackup -backuptarget:d -quiet" needs around 2 hours first time. How to set it to backup as differential or incremental backup?
Q3: Since we have another robcopy data backup on daily time, can we run systemstatebackup every Sunday only?
Q4: Is it recommend to run systemstatebackup for all DC separately?
Please advise.

I am facing Backup error from last few days, Error Code 0x80780102. after lot of online search I think its directory Limit error in .Net Framework, so when I modify backup and remove option of BareMetal / C Drive and System Reserved Files, its working now.
What is other alternate Solution because System Backup is Also Important.

I have a Windows 2008 R2 server named Server that runs a backup each night to an encrypted USB drive attached to the server. I shared the drive on the server as shown below and configured Windows Server Backup to backup to the local shared folder.
Everything worked well for several months with the backup speeds being about 1 GB/min (15 to 20 MB/s). At the beginning of this week, I noticed that the backup speeds reduced to 1 to 2 MB/s which resulted in the backup not completing before the encrypted disk was automatically dismounted.
After much research and testing, I believe that I have narrowed down the cause of the issue to an issue writing data to the local UNC path of \\Server\Backup as shown by comparing the following tests.
Test 1
The above DOS command copies the file to the encrypted drive mounted at h:\ quickly.
Test 2
The above DOS command copies the data to the same location but was 33x slower that the Test 1 DOS command.
I duplicated the above results using the xcopy command instead of the copy command but could not duplicate the above results on my Windows 7 computer. On my Windows 7 computer, the two versions of the copy performed the same.
The following are some additional observations:
