Windows Server 2016 Essentials Not Running Scheduled Backup
Windows Server 2016 - Automatic Schedule - Invalid location
Hello Everyone,
So this is a weird problem. Using the windows feature backup utility. I am able to back up to a network shared folder only by selecting a manual backup option and it does not ask me for credentials. But if I select the Automatic Schedule backup it will ask
me for credentials and I use the backup operator credentials. It allows me to go to the final step and then it fails with an error "This is an invalid location." I'm like I just did a backup manually, why is it failing when I want to schedule automatic
backups.
Anyone have any ideas or suggestions on what could be causing this?
Later on today I will be scrutinizing logs to see if I can find any errors or warnings that may suggest the reason for the error. I have a couple of places that I will be checking.
Thanks,
PB
Snapshot vs System State Backup
Hello,
This is for a Windows Server 2016.
So yesterday my boss asked me what is the difference between a snapshot vs a system state backup?
The difference that I know of is the snapshot you have to write or copy the Guid and a system state is what you do for a regular backup. Plus I know snapshot is suppose to be an exact copy in the exact time that you do a snapshot. Other than that I don't know
what else there is for differences.
I would also like to know for myself: What is the difference between a snapshot vs a system state?
Thanks for any help given.
How to Backup Weekly And Incremental A Day
Could someone tell me how would I backup window server full every Friday, and then each day is incremental?? Recently in the past, it backs up Full, and then each day is incremental, as shown on the picture below. When I schedule it in "window task schedule" to every Friday, then the backup is not occurring not even incremental everyday. Please tell me how I can backup window server full every Friday, and then each day is incremental. Thanks.

Error when trying to update Online Protection Policy in DPM 1807
Hello,
Our company makes use of System Center Data Protection Manager 1807 with Online Protection to Azure to do our long term back ups.
We are currently working to update our online protection policy to include a new file server. When working through the "Add Online Protection" wizard in DPM, we end up with this error at the end.
When checking CBEngineCurr.log I see this series of warnings when we get the error:

Tried to look up the error 100240 and found nothing. Also looked into the error code: CatalogUnauthorizedError and wasn't able to find a genuine solution. Only saw things dealing with deleting a "spurious windows task" which was never explained.
Anyone else getting this and any help with a fix? Any would be appreciated!

Backup issue on Windows Server 2016 Essentials
Hello,
We have been having an issue for the last week with our Windows Server Backup failing on our Windows Server 2016 Essentials server. It is failing with the application event ID 517. The backup operation has failed with the following error code '0x807800AF' (The Volume Shadow Copy Service backup complete operation failed. The backup backs up the EFI System partition, local disk with all the data, Bare metal recovery, but fails on the System state. It says the Backup canceled. System state backup was canceled.
The error in the windows server backup software is the Volume Shadow Copy Service backup complete operation failed. A volume shadow copy service component encountered an unexpected error.
The server has been rebooted and we will get one working backup but the issue returns the following day.
Whoami /groups does not show domain groups
Hi there,
We have a problem with 1 of our domains, we want to install our backup tool from Acronis with Exchange application. Herefore we need to login as domain admin. This shows us the following error:
Cannot collect the metadata of Microsoft Exchange Server
We contacted Acronis, they told us; the problem is using the command: WHOAMI /GROUPS does not show any domain groups.. This is why Acronis software thinks our domain admin is not member of the organization management.
Somehow this does not work on any of the servers in this domain. We have more domains where this command DOES show domain groups.. We can't find anything different in the domain.

Backups taking way to long using WBadmin
Using WBAdmin on a scheduled task. Having issues with the "compacting of the virtual disk" taking forever, and running on every single backup (and not incremental like it's supposed to). I realize that this is a "feature", but is there any way to turn it off? It's a feature that I do not need. The current file server size is under 2tb, starts at 4:30pm and is taking almost 24+ hours to complete.
Currently just going over a 1GbE connection, would a 10GbE connection be better?
We do a full backup every day of our File Server. We are not looking to do incremental backups.

When we try to restart the Block Level Backup Engine service we get error as “Windows could not start the Block Level Backup Engine Service on Local Computer.

I have already restarted Virtual disk and Volume shadow copy service, but no luck.

Restoring a Domain Controller from a Bare Metal Recovery Backup
Hello All,
I currently have 3 domain controllers on site. 2 are Windows 2003 Standard SP2 and the newest is Windows 2008 R2 Sp1 whcih holds the FSMO roles.
I backup the system state on all three servers using a 3rd party backup solution everynight. I also perform a full server backup on the 2008 server using windows backup including the BMR option.
My question is, and I've done some searching but cant find an answer that satifies me is how would you go about restoring the Windows 2008 server should a failure occur. Would you move seize the fsmo roles on another server then restore the Windows 2008 DC manually by just re-installing Windows and joining to the domain and promoting again as the other two domain controllers are still available?
Or would you restore via the BMR option, how would this affect Active directory and the FSMO roles bearing in mind the other dc's would still be available?
Is the BMR option only good in this situation if we have a total site failure where all 3 servers were wiped out?
If anyone could shed any light on this I would be particulary grateful.
Many Thanks
Chris

Problem recovering from Windows Server Backup
Hello,
need some help, but I don't know if this is the write place.
Got a Windows 2012 R2, crashed and a Backup in a iSCSI disk.
When I try to recover (create a Windows 2012 Boot disk with iSCSI Drivers), the recover does not recognised any backup on the iscsi.
The files are there: The original machine add 1 disk with 3 partitions (System Reserved, C and D), so 3 vhdx files, with size of the partitions.
The backups were running smoothly so i think the backups are OK.
I would like to recover the whole, machine, or some files in disk D, but when I try to mount the vhdx, on a Windows 10, the partition D shows in raw, and the file system is not recognised.
What's the best solution to recover from the Windows Server Backup?
Convert vhdx to another format?
What's the best tool to use?
Why wbadmin doesn't recognise any backups even the backups were running sucessfully?

Hi Everyone,
We have a Corporate Server 2012 Datacenter Hyper-V Host with about 10 VM's which use ARCServe and the Microsoft Hyper-V writer.
We aren't getting backups and when I run a vssadmin list writers I get the "waiting for response"
C:\Windows\system32>vssadmin list writers
vssadmin 1.1 - Volume Shadow Copy Service administrative command-line tool
(C) Copyright 2001-2012 Microsoft Corp.
Waiting for responses.
These may be delayed if a shadow copy is being prepared.
I've restarted the volume shadow copy and Microsoft Software shadow copy provider services but it still won't list the vss writers.
Looks like a reboot will only resolve the issue. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
