How Do I backup Window Server Physical Host To Another Physical Host Using Window Server Backup

$

Hi,

Can somebody give me steps or screenshot to backup window server 2012 physical host to another window server 2012 physical host using the default "window server backup" program. Before it was doing a daily backup in the evening from one host to another host, and on the second host, will say last backup was yesterdays date. Now it does not do that after I install the Backupassist software, which I think it canceled the default backup. The Backupassist technician can only help with their Backupassist software. Please let me know how to get back this backup. Thanks.

Drive Full - How To Stop Windows Server Backup to delete my existing backups

$

Hi,

I have been using Windows Server Backup on a Windows Server 2012 R2 to make daily backups.

By default, when the backup drive is almost full, the server will automatically clean up the drive to store newer backups.

How can I stop it from removing my old backups when the drive is at full?

Preferably I would like it to just stop making backups when the drive can not store any more backups. Since I will be monitoring I can easily switch to new drives rather than losing my previous backups.

Please advice,

Thank you.

Hie, I removed hard drives from a HP server and put them into another HP server but it didn't read them. I then put them back to the initial HP server and are not reading again. What could be happening

Every other backup is failing with error -2147024662 (0x800700EA "More data is available")

Good day,

I have run into a peculiar issue recently and was hoping to get some help.  Windows server backup is failing every other backup job.  The job in between is successful, but is run as a full backup.  This reduces the number of backups that can be stored on the USB disk and is not an acceptable work around.

OS is Windows Server 2012 R2 Essentials.

Here is what I have tried:
Replaced the USB disks, no change
Ran a chkdsk on all disks.  They all come back clean and the event log also indicates they are clean
Deleted the backup job and recreated it, no change
Removed AV, no change

The issue appears to be the same as the one described in this post:
https://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/office/en-US/0b535721-bcf6-4a3c-9615-28f4b8d02feb/2012-essential-r2-backup-unsuccessfull-with-error-code-2147942634?forum=windowsbackup

I am out of ideas at this point and was hoping to get some help.  I have read a few posts online about this issue, but the only fix I found was to replace the USB disks.  I have done this with no change to the issue.

Error: Snapshots were found, but they were outside of your allowed context

I performed backup of a volume storing a database on my server using Windows Server Backup (WSB).

Now I have some old shadows that I would like to remove.

To do that, I use the vssadmin command with ShadowID that I'd like to remove:

vssadmin delete shadows /Shadow={9bae879d-979e-4ec0-b252-720de085d2bf}

However, I get the response

Error: Snapshots were found, but they were outside of your allowed context.  Try
removing them with the backup application which created them.

Well, the application that created these shadows was WSB, and WSB GUI does not have command to delete old shadows.

How can I delete these shadows?

TIA

Can't Select Recovery Drive

Greetings all,

I am using Windows Server 2019 Standard Edition (evaluation license) to conduct some backup and restore testing using Azure and the built-in windows server backup utility. I am running the machine as a VM on ESX 6.7, with two (virtual) hard drives. I am attempting to restore the system state using the instructions in this article: https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/azure/backup/backup-azure-restore-system-state . MARS successfully copies the system recovery files to my designated local drive (D:) . I have rebooted the server into safe mode, as specified in the article.

However, the Windows Server Backup utility does not allow me to select the drive in the wizard. That is, when I select the "Local Drives" radio button, on the "Specify Location Type" pane, I have only the "DVD Drive (E:)" as a pick in the "Backup Location" drop-down list on the "Select Backup Location" pane. The correct drive, D:\, is not on the list. I have confirmed the drive is available and the drive has the system state restore files. Obviously this is important, as I intend to replace my on-prem backup with Azure and will need to be able to do a system state restore. What am I missing?

Thanks in advance!

Windows server 2008 r2 hardening

Hello,

Firstly I would like to say I am still a learning admin which has been given a task somewhat out of my league.

We have a client who has windows server 2008 r2 running as a domain controller with multiple office pc's on the main floor. After a recent attack of ransomware at a different clients office they are worried about security. And I was asked to harden the security on the server and network in general. After going through a lot of information on the web I understand that number one priority is to be made for secure backing up and am suggesting a cloud based backup solution with the option to rollback file versions so that in the case of ransomware we have clean backups of all the important files.

What I want to ask is can anyone point me in the direction of some good guidelines or point out some general things that should be done on the server so that I can more or less sleep a bit easier. Ive been reading up on AppLocker but I am confused as to which folders and paths I should block off for running exe files.

KB2781272 - Anywhere on this planet where I can get this hotfix?

I am in need of KB2781272 for my Windows Home Server 2011 but all links to its existance are no longer valid. I understand that support for this product stopped in April of 2016 but I am only looking for a hotfix file that, I would assume, still exists someplace. I am not looking for support, just the hotfix. Does anyone know where I can find it? Microsoft support has taken the attitude that its a dead product and will not seem to help. Not sure why there is no archive of old hotfixes someplace. Anyone have any ideas where I might be able to get this hotfix?

Thanks.

Will adding a drive letter to the recovery partition cause issues?

$

Hi,

I have (hopefully) an easy question to answer?

We backup a number of Windows 2012 & 2016 servers using an older backup application that pre-dates these server OS's. The software can back them up ok, however it mentions that these servers contain a recovery partition and in order to back them up and later restore them correctly, they need to have a drive letter assigned.

Given this is a system reserved partition, I'm a little wary of assigning a drive letter to them in case it ends up causing issues with the server now or down the track.

I've searched around to see if there's any advice either for or against doing this, but with no luck.

Can anyone out there advise if this is a good or bad thing to do?

Cheers.

(server 2008 R2) Windows backup suddenly doing incremental backup of one of my drives even though set to full backup

I've done a backup today as I have a hundred times on my 2008 R2 machine and for some reason it now will only do an incremental backup of my largest drive (160gb). In performance settings it's set to normal but I've also tried changing it to custom with all drives set to full. I've swapped out to a 2nd external backup drive. I've swapped between vss settings. I've also done a chkdsk on the drive itself.

I'm not sure what else to try other than deleting the old backup and starting fresh?

Please somebody help me!!

Hi All

I've tried to create a Full Server Backup schedule through the wizard as well as through wbadmin in command prompt. I'll paste the command prompt here which is the same error I get when I try to add the schedule through the Windows Server Backup schedule:

wbadmin enable backup -systemState -allcritical -schedule:21:00 -addtarget:{6ef6b4bf-0000-0000-0000-000000000000}
wbadmin 1.0 - Backup command-line tool

Retrieving volume information...
The scheduled backup settings:

Bare metal recovery : Included
System state backup: Included
Volumes in backup: Local Disk(C:),System Reserved (100.00 MB)
Files excluded: None
Advanced settings: VSS Backup Option (COPY)
Location to store backup: StoreJet Transcend USB Device
Times of day to run backup: 21:00

Do you want to enable scheduled backups with the above settings? [Y] Yes [N] No
y

Do you want to format and use StoreJet Transcend USB Device (that includes volumes D:) as the location to store scheduled backups? [Y] Yes [N] No

Label the backup disk as SERV 2019_03_25 11:54 Disk_01.
This information will be used to identify this backup disk during a recovery.
The operation to format the disk failed. Please ensure the disk is online and accessible.

The system cannot find the file specified.

Any assistance would be appreciated!

Find a VM Server's Missing AVHDX File?

I am attempting to recover a server on a VM, but when I attempt to start the VM after a full backup restore, I am being told that a specific AVHDX file is not present. I have manually tried looking for it in recent backups without success. I have 270+ backups. Is there a way for me to fairly simply search all of them for the missing file?

Archive WindowsImageBackup for storage on non-NTFS file system?

I assume copying the WindowsImageBackup directory from NTFS to a non-NTFS file system will get rid of important file attributes. So I tried compressing WindowsImageBackup.Howerver right click and Send to compressed (zipped) folder, gives me an error message:

File not found or no read permission

How do I best archive the WindowsImageBackup directory for storage on non-NTFS file systems?
