If yes, does this operation truncate Exchange logs?

Many Thanks,

Windows server 2008 r2 export event logs

Hi to all,

I have a question about backing up event viewer logs. My boss wants to backup event logs every couple of weeks. I know I can export logs, but we have about 20 servers, and this job can be very dificult, regarding the number of servers. Second, I can not run ANY script due to security policy on the domain. Can anyone tell me is there any kind of software that can help me manage logs easier? Because this is taking too much time from me. Thank you all in advance!

Dear All,

Greetings, I have to know the process by which I can make all the configuration of one server copied and pasted to another server. I mean to say that I have to make a clone of SERVER 1 in the SERVER 2. Now explaining more, in Server 1, I am using Windows 2012 and also hyper-v is configured and virtual machines are also installed. Again, In server 2, I have to use all the features ans same operating systems and all application per system of hyper-v of server 1 and also in server 2 I have windows 2012 installed as base machine. I can say here that i have to make a clone of SERVER 1 in the SERVER 2. So, please help me if there is any such process of give me a link where i can study it.

System State Backup does not work. "system writer is not found in the backup". "vssadmin list writers" does not list the system writer

This same error has been appearing in forums for about 5 years now!  Resolutions vary from altering permissions on folders as described in this article:-  http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2009272   and theres even a solution which involves performing an in-place upgrade like this:-

http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/windowsbackup/thread/5a637292-fca7-4b8b-94a3-cbceda96d58e

I have nothing wrong with the permissions under c:\windows\winsxs

The cryptsvc stops and starts successfully but the system writer still does not appear in the list from vssadmin list writers.

This means I can not backup the system state.  "wbadmin start systemstatebackup -backuptarget:d:   also fails.

Since the problem is not fixed by the permissions changes and service restarts, the only other option appears to be an in-place upgrade.

Since I have WindowsServer-2012 fully patched and the problem appears to have been successfully ported over theres nothing to upgrade to.

How do I get out of this situation?

Windows SErver 2012 backup - overwrite behavior

Good morning, all!

I have a Windows 2012 server that has Windows backup running.  I've configured an external USB drive for the backup target.  I can get six to eight backups on the drive, depending on the day.

According to the information I can find, Windows backup is supposed to delete the oldest backups to make room for the new backup.  However, what I've noticed is that Windows backup will fill the disk, then deleteall the backups on the external disk and start over.  For example, on Monday I start with an empty disk and make one backup.  Tuesday through Friday full backups occur as expected.  Then, Saturday night, all the copies disappear and the backup starts over.  Right now I see 6 copies that I can restore from.  By the end of the week, I'll be back to one or two copies and start the cycle again.

I haven't found any place to modify this behavior.  It would seem that overwriting the oldest copy, just enough to make room for the current backup, would be the default behavior.  Is this normal for backup, or is there another place to look?

Thanks!

Gregg

System State Failure using Windows Server Backup - error code '2155347997'

Good Day,

We have a SQL Failover Cluster environment with 2 x Win2k8 R2 SP1 servers. We cannot perform a successfulsystem state backup via the Windows Backup Application. The system was patched with updates and worked fine for about a week until this issue had started, so I don't think it is attributed to the updates?

The job starts and completes 1.73mb before it fails.

I have verified :

1. vssadmin writers are in a stable state

How to backup the ProgramData\Microsoft\Crypto\RSA\MachineKeys directories and files

$

Using an Axcient appliance to backup Windows 2008 server.  The axcient appliance will not back up the ProgramData/Microsoft/Crypto/RSA/MachineKeys directories and files due to permission denied error messages.  First of all do these files really need to be backed up?  Gather from the reading that some of the files are important but not always all of them.  Also gathered from the reading that improperly changing permissions on the files can render some of the files invalid which could cause issues for the users that really own them.  In examing the file permissions the owner of the file cannot be displayed.  How can one determine who owns the directory/file?  Also caught some hints in some of the newsgroups and discussion threads that changing permissions is not enough to allow backups of the MachineKeys and Registry Hacks may be required.

Am looking for a simple checklist, in laymen's terms, of steps to follow to get the Axcient appliance to back up these directories and files.

Thank You.

Server 2012 Essentials - Restore backup to a smaller size partition?

Hi there,  i have a question about restoring a server backup to different sized partition.

my situation is:

im currently running a raid 10 configuration (hp smart array) using 4 * 2Tb HDD's with a total 4Tb of usable storage space.

at the time of partitioning i didn't realize my server hardware doesn't support GPT booting. I created 1 logical drive with a total space allocation of 4TB, now of course when windows formats the drive I end up with only 2TB of usable storage (MBR restriction)

What i would like to do is, delete the logical drive (since i cant re size it) and create 2 new logical drives, the first being a 250GB C drive (MBR), and the second, a 3.75TB storage drive (GPT). So basically my question is,  can i backup all my current server settings, files and system state and be able to restore it to the new 250gb logical drive?

i believe the total space being used on the current drive is 80gb of 2tb.

i would really apprecaite any help or advice!

thank you for your time!

When trying to backup Windows Server 2012 using built-in Windows Server Backup tool I get the following error:

The backup operation that started at '‎XXX....' has failed with following error code '0x80780179' (An error occured while writing to the backup target.). Please review the event details for a solution, and then rerun the backup operation once the issue is resolved.

The event details I looked at doesn't provide any help other than the ErrorMessage=%%2155348345

I searched everywhere but the solution eludes me.

Can someone please help me resolve this?

Thanks

Backup Help

After reading through countless posts, I'm still confused as ever on which option to use "VSS Full Backup" or "VSS Copy Backup", so I will just tell you my setup and what I want to be able to do, and you can tell me which is right. I'd like a nightly incremental backup. Everynight, it should just backup files/folders that I've specified that have been edited/changed and create a new .vhd file. Will doing it this way effect my ability to restore?

Also, if I wanted to create an image of the machine, is this doable from the windows server back up utility? Then if the server crashes, I can restore it (with a disk?) and then restore my data using the most recent backup that I'm trying to setup at the moment.

This is my plan, because one of my servers actually did crash this weekend, and it was a pain to get it up and running again. I create a system snapshot (can windows server backup do this?) and save to an external 4TB drive. If it crashes, I load up disk, plug in 4TB drive and recover that snapshot. Once it loads up, I can go to the windows server backup utility and select "recover", i can then point it to the network location that I'm sending all these nightly incremental too, and it will restore all the files/folders.

Is this correct and possible?

Thanks

System State Backup interrupted on Windows 2008 r2 - Access is Denied

Hello,

I am working on Windows Server 2008 r2, trying to perform a System State Backup.  After configuring the System State Backup and in the middle of the process, this is interrupted with the an Access is Denied error.

Here are more details: I configure a Shared Network Folder with the right privileges to store the Backup. The size of the Backup is estimated at 8 GB. There is more than enough space in the Shared Network Folder to store the backup. After having completed almost 1 GB, the process is interrupted with the following error message:

Error en la copia de seguridad de C:\Windows\winsxs\x86_microsoft-windows-t..tional-chinese-dayi_31bf3856ad364e35_6.1.7600.16385_none_6052679946eea92d\TableTextServiceDaYi.txt durante la escritura: error [0x80070005] Acceso denegado.

I will appreciate if someone can shed some light into what might be the cause that the backup cannot be completed successfully.

Take care,

Windows Backup throwing 517 / 2147943530 Error "Not enough server storage is available to process the command"

$

Greetings all,

I'm attempting to use the built in Windows backup tool to complete a backup from our Windows 2008 R2 Server onto a Drobo unit. The Drobo has approximately 15 Terabytes free, and has no quotas or limitations on what I can copy to it from the server.

The total projected backup size from the server to the Drobo unit is approximately 110 Gigabytes. The backup always fails by the 25 Gigabyte mark.

I've read KB Article 177078 regarding this error. While this server has no active antivirus software, I did try to increase the IRPStackSize several times, taking it all the way to 36. It seemed to have no affect on the backup.

I do believe there is one large file (approximately 50 gigabytes) within the 110 Gigabytes that the system is backing up. I suspect something in Windows is choking on that specific file, though I have no evidence that it is the file causing the problems. I have pasted the entire error from the Event Viewer below. The Windows 2008 R2 server is relatively clean, has only default Server software and is currently with all recommended patches.

Hi please help, Windows Server backup keeps failing with an error "The drive cannot find the sector requested", I am doing a full backup to an external drive which has been dedicated for backups, it does about 94.6gb out of 95gb so is close to finishing. I have performed a check disk, updated all my hardware drivers (its a HP server with hardware mirrored drives), I am at a loss - does anyone have any ideas or solutions.

I have uninstalled and rebooted the server and then reinstalled but still get the same error

Also must add that this is a live server, oh and is my first server 2012 install (soon to be last!!)

Can I copy windows server backup files to another location?

$

I am new to using the Windows Server Backup tool.  I've got Server 2008 R2 Standard with multiple virtual machines running on it.  I need to make sure the server and virtual machines are properly backed up for potential recovery later.

1.  Will Windows Server Backup properly backup the virtual machines so they can later be recovered?

2.  Can the backup files be copied to an alternate location somehow from their original location so I can keep a copy of the backup files off-site?  (So far from what I've read, this doesn't seem like an option, but most of the posts I've come across are a couple years old.)

Thanks for the assistance.
