SCSI hard drives and Server 2K8 Backup
The Volume Shadow Copy operation failed with Error 0x800423F3
Hello.
I have setup Windows Backup in my 2008 SBS environment to ensure an additional backup as well as my Backup Exec schedule. All was working fine until the other day and now each night the Windows Server backup fails with the following error:
The Volume Shadow Copy operation failed with Error 0x800423F3
From the event logs I can see:
1. (Information Event) VSS Writer: prepare for the backup
2. (Information Event) ESENT: lsass Shadow Copy instance starting: Full Shadow Copy
3. (Information Event) ESENT: certsrv Shadow Copy instance starting: Full Shadow Copy
4. (Information Event) ESENT: svchost Shadow Copy instance starting: Full Shadow Copy
5. (Information Event) ESE: starting Shadow Copy instance
6. (Information Event) MSExchangeIS: Exchange VSS Writer successfully prepared the Database Engine for a full backup (for each Storage Group)
7. (Information Event) MSExchangeIS: Prepared for Snapshot successfully
8. (Information Event) MSSQ$MICROSOFT##SSEE (unsure if this is relevant): The description for Event ID 17137 from source MSSQ$MICROSOFT##SSEE cannot be found.
9. (Information Event) ESENT: svchost Shadow Copy instance freeze started
10. ESE (Information Event): Information Store, Shadow Copy instance freeze started
11. ESENT (ERROR): svchost Shadow Copy instance aborted
Other events include:
VSS (Information Event): Ran out of time while expanding file specification
ESE (ERROR): Information Store Shadow Copy aborted
ESENT: (Information Event): The database engine began replaying log file
The logs then continue almost identical for each Storage Group.
I checked the status of Microsoft Exchange Writer in VSSAdmin and it says Last Error: Timed Out.
As I said it has been working fine up until a few days ago. Nothing has changed without our SBS environment.
Any help would be appreciated as I am a bit lost when it comes to VSS.
Kind Regards

can't copy file because it used!
Dear All,
i've checked today the server back-up and found this error :
The backup operation that started at '2013-05-24T12:57:19.226666500Z' has failed with following error code '0x80070020' (The process cannot access the file because it is being used by another process.). Please review the event details for a solution, and then rerun the backup operation once the issue is resolved.
can someome advise how to fix this please? or atleast the allow windows server back up to copy the files even if they are open .
Percentage free disk space - warning.
SBS 2008. Windows Backup is giving me these messages regularly.
I have listed the shadow copies and tried to remove the oldest with:vssadmin delete shadows /for=k: /oldest
I get response "No items found that satisfy that query". Any advice appreciated.
Also, how do I change the threshold for that warning?
-------------------------- Many thanks for your time.
Windows Backup fails: not enough free space, but there is plenty
System: C:\ 120GB SSD Drive, 40GB free
D: 1.5 TB regular SATA drive, 682GB free
Trying to run windows backup, only options chosen are "Let me choose -> Include system image", all other check boxes unchecked.
Destination, network drive with 800 GB free.
Backup fails almost immediately with "The disk that your backups are being saved on doesn't have enough free space." I just want my basic system image with drivers etc backed up so I can recover quickly, all my data is backed up remotely.
Windows Server Regback directory files failing? Commvault
[C:\Windows\System32\config\RegBack\DEFAULT] Cannot create a file when that file already exists.
[C:\Windows\System32\config\RegBack\SAM] Cannot create a file when that file already exists.
[C:\Windows\System32\config\RegBack\SECURITY] Cannot create a file when that file already exists.
[C:\Windows\System32\config\RegBack\SOFTWARE] Cannot create a file when that file already exists.
[C:\Windows\System32\config\RegBack\SYSTEM] Cannot create a file when that file already exists.
We have VSS enabled for System State backups for each of these servers. Is it necessary to back these RegBack files up? Or can we filter/exclude these out safely? I've seen only one person in a forum ever say that excluding these was okay.
Can anyone please shed some light on this?
Windows Server 2012 - code '0x80780102' (The system writer is not found in the backup.)
I'm having an issue backing up. The system writer is not available and I've tried all the previous solutions such as (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2009272) as well as others on here, setting the permissions etc. but the system writer never appears under 'vssadmin list writers'
It seems this issue has been around for many years on previous version. Is there a solution? I've spent days on this so far.
Many thanks,
Geoff
Failed Items - AppData and ServiceProfiles directories
For a few of our Windows Servers we are seeing various failed items in our backup reports. Mostly, these are .dat.LOG files and .dat files. Below are some of the failed items from the log. Can anybody please provide some suggestions on whether or not I can filter some of this stuff out safely / add exclusions? These servers are not using VSS for their file backups, but ARE using VSS for system state backups. WS 2008 R2.

what's the best practice on Active Directory backup plan
Dear all,
as we know, before Windows Server 2008 , Windows backup tool is very good and easy to use.
but since Windows Server 2008, the Windows Server backup tool's function is very simple, we cannot select full backup, difference backup or incremental backup method. and we cannot only backup the system state data in GUI in WinSvr 08, and we cannot define the backup shedule such as use full backup every week and diffence backup everyday.
in short, I don't think the windows server backup tool is useful to backup the Active Directory. and I don't think use System Center Data Protection Manager is a good solution, because it's too big and expansive if use SCDPM for AD only.
So, dear guy, would you please tell me how do you backup your AD is actural practice.
BTW, one of my customer use Windows Server 2008 SP2 (not R2) as their DC , they don't want upgrade them now. and they want me give them guide about the DC backup and restore . would you please give me some advice and suggestion.
Thank you

2012 Windows Server Backup UI (wbadmin.msc) is missing ?
Hi,
I have installed the Windows Server Backup feature several times in Windows Server 2012, but the "Windows Server Backup UI" is missing under the "Administrative Tools" and under the \System32\wbadmin.msc .
Any ideas how to re-create or workaround this problem ?
I really appreciate your help !

Windows Server Backup - Exclude Folders with filter (2012)
Hello there!
I am searching fo a way to backup a folder with all it's subdirectories except the directories called "source".
Windows Server Backup supports exclusions based on filters for file name extensions, but i haven't found a case where folder or specific filenames have been excluded.
- Is there a way to do that with built in features?
- Or is it better to use a powershell script in combination with robocopy?
- Third party utilities would be my last resort.
I am thankful for any hints and suggestions into the right direction!
Time zone of System Image Recovery
Hi all,
My server OS is Windows Server 2008 R2 (EN). But I set the time zone as China time (UTC +8:00) in the Windows already. One day, I wanted to recover my system in PE. So I inserted the Windows Server 2008 R2 disc into the DVD-ROM, and then booted from the DVD. Then I set the Time and currency format to Chinese (Simplified, PRC), but the time zone didn't chang to China time (GMT +8:00) automatically, it was still showing GMT -8:00 (PST). Can I fix it?
Thanks,

Windows Server 2012 Backup Not Doing Incremental
I'm running Windows Server 2012, with my "C" drive on a small, 60 GB SSD and a large, 3 TB drive as my "D" drive, with two VMs on "D" (only one VM runs, the other's turned off all the time). In the past I've had no problem using Windows Server Backup to do an initial Full backup of all drives, with scheduled daily incremental backups, to another 3 TB HDD. However, recently I formatted the backup 3 TB drive and started over (dumb thing to do). After the initial, full backup (System Reserved, Bare Metal Recovery, C, D, Hyper-V, Virtual Machines), all subsequent backups do System Reserved and Local C as incremental, but the large "D" drive, 3 TB HDD (with about 2 TB of data on it) is always done as Full, and it takes six hours. It used to do "D" as incremental and would take a few minutes, depending on how much data changed that day.
I have tried configuring Performance Settings to Fast, which is supposed to backup changes only, yet each night a full backup of "D" is made. I've also tried configuring Performance Settings as Custom, and forcing each drive to be Incremental in the drop-down box next to each drive, but it makes no difference: "D" is always a full backup. The time taken isn't the biggest problem -- the biggest problem is that I have no backup history. A file deleted yesterday is gone for good without incremental backups.
Does anyone have any idea why Windows Server Backup will not backup my 3 TB "D" drive (with 2 TB of data) incrementally? I used to be able to hold over a dozen backup copies before, now all I get is yesterday's data.

Event ID 521-- Not able to take backup of domin controller
Dear Team,
I am not able to perform entire server backup of domain controller as I am getting following error:
Error: A Volume Shadow Copy Service operation failed. Detailed error: The volume shadow copy operation failed with error 0x800423F4. View the event log for more information.
Need to take backup on urgent basis for security purpose.

Backup fails with error code 0x80070002 / Assigning drive letter for system-reserved partition helps, but why ...?
seems the Backup problem with error code 0x80070002 struck me as well:
Backup fails with only 0x80070002 and no further information. I'm not doing a backup for the whole drive,
but for selected folders from several partitions (being on the same physical HDD).
I've read lots and lots of threads here, so here is what I tried so far and what I can give as information:
- System is Windows 7 Pro 64-bit
- trying to back up to 1.5 TB external HDD (Western Digital) connected via USB
- system has 8 GB RAM, but chipset is Intel P55 so I guess I don't have Nvidia-based USB
(device manager says "Intel(R) 5 Series/3400 Series Chipset Family USB Enhanced Host Controller - 3B34").
So I guess the Nvidia USB fix mentioned elsewhere does not apply as well
- concerning shadowcopy storage area:
Situation was that used/assigned/maximum size was nearly the same values, but I changed it to be the following (and it did not make any difference
after a reboot):
C:\Windows\system32>vssadmin list shadowstorage
vssadmin 1.1 - Verwaltungsbefehlszeilenprogramm des Volumeschattenkopie-Dienstes
(C) Copyright 2001-2005 Microsoft Corp.

- in another thread I found something about USN journal on system-reserved partition after having installed Acronis True Image Home 2010 (which I also tried and removed again). But my output for this is as follows:
C:\Windows\system32>fsutil usn queryjournal h:
Fehler: Das Datenträgeränderungsjournal ist nicht aktiviert.
- no dual boot configuration - system was a clean install of Windows 7-64-Pro, no other OS added afterwards
- I checked the registry for the paths for the profiles, seems to be alright (did not check this any more because of the workaround
I found (see below))
- did a chkdsk /R on all three source partitions (where I take data from for the backup) and on the target partition (on external HDD):
no errors found
What I finally found as a workaround the following:
If no drive letter is assigned to the small system-reserved partition (containing bcd), backup fails with the above
problem. Upon reboot, I also see error event 24620 from Bitlocker-Driver in the event log ("Überprüfung des verschlüsselten Volumes: Die Volumeinformationen auf "\\?\Volume{06d90073-b8bd-11de-be0f-806e6f6e6963}" können nicht gelesen werden.") where the volume id refers to the small
system-reserved partition (checked it in the registry when I (for testing) assigned a drive letter to that partition). Noteworthy that
I *NEVER* did anything with BitLocker (and remember, my version is Win7-64-PRO).
BUT if I assign a drive letter to the partition and reboot, I don't see the BitLocker error event in the log and backup works.
This behaviour can be reproduced (take away drive letter, reboot -> BitLocker error event, backup will fail. Reassign drive letter,
reboot -> no BitLocker error, backup works).
(Backup worked in the past when I tried it in order to compare it to more sophisticated tools, and I think at that time there also was no drive letter assigned to that partition, but I'm not 100% sure about this)
Can you please explain that? Of course I do not want to waste a drive letter for that partition only to make backup work.
Regards,
Mario
Recover Deleted Daily snapshots (Windows Server 2008 Backup software)
I am currently using Windows Server 2008 built-in backup software to backup one server nightly. The backup USB hard drive got full and Windows Server Backup software deleted daily snapshots before May 15. I need to restore some folder prior to May 15.
Is there a way to recover deleted snapshots prior to May 15.
Thanks--Nate
Windows Server Backup (2012) Event Log documentation?
Is there any documentation for the details included in Backup Events 4 and 14 on Windows Server 2012?
There are several dozen fields and I can't find any information on how to interpret them. (Especially things like "State='14' PreviousState='17' FullBackupReason='10'.")
