Loss of hardware and most of backup data, wanting to recover whats left on sole remaining drive, ( non operating ware drive)

I have lost three computers and a server to electrical storm, I do however have a remaining backup drive from the server that is readable, on this drive there is contents of business files , excel , word, records of clients, etc..., I have reinstalled the server software it is now backing up the computers. I know the name of the prior hardware ( computers and have renamed them the same) the server recognizes the data files from before but will not restore it to the new computers as it recognizes the difference in the hardware. It says that it "does not recognize the operating system in the restoring computer and stops the restore at 81 %. So I have the files as data, and am wondering if there is something I can do to make the server recognize them as the old boxes, if so how, or if for nothing else, is the a program that can read these files and take the data files and restore them to the individual files the were to restore excel , word, etc.. The process to repair this is on going.. I will say that the server sees the files as an archive and its partial as if it wasn't a full backup, but the one moment that one of the burned computers did work , I attempted to get anything I could back and it showed me the files though partial and tried a restore until the computer it was restoring stopped and never again restarted, nor were its drives readable or operable . ( the system drive worked for ten minutes and failed on error, the others could not even be seen, I haves sent the other drives out for forensic and no cigar, they are ded dead....so my little hope is on this one set of files which contents contain a 250g of partials that would help a lot to recover,. There was no back up software just the windows server auto remote back up process, for the client boxes, is all. This hs been a really bad loss in most cases but any reuse of any data is a huge gain, due to our business,

Thanks.

Hi, my name's Jig. I uninstalled and reinstalled Windows Server 2012 R2 Datacenter due to some technicalities, however,

on the same machine still. I know that doing the latter would really hurt the activation process but I was without options.

Please help.

Server 2012 R2 Backup issues (unresolvable since hours)

Hey community,

i`m reading these topics since years. All issues could be resolved so far. But since yesterday i`m really afraid. I think i can`t solve this issue without you specialists.

I´m running a Hyper V (Server 2012 R2 Core) with currently three VM`s on it.
I like to initiate a host based backup with "wbadmin".

The used command ist: wbadmin start backup -backupTarget:B:\ -hyperv:"VMS030"

The VM has three disks: Fast Storage 400gb, Slow Storage 500 GB, Paging on SSD`s 15 gb.
I assigned 30.720 megabytes of RAM to this VM.

The other VM`s are much smaller. The Backup is working on these VM`s without any errors.
Now... what`s special about this VM? The VM is a SBS2011 with Exchange, SQL Server and AD on it.

The wbadmin command fails with

Do you guy`s have any clue how i can resolve this?

As i said ... i can backup a few smaller VM`s. Only the "Big one" fails.
I already thought about a disk space issue ... But there is at least 30 % of free space on each disk.

Thank you all!

Backing Up Bitlocker Encrypted Disks

I'm planning to have bitlocker encrypt the hard drives on my server, but I have questions about windows server backups of encrypted hard drives.  I use both file AND system image backups (i.e. Bare metal recovery, system state etc.), so my first question is are those backups also encrypted.  I seem to recall (though I hadn't gotten around to using it) that 2008 R2 backups were DECRYPTED (in any event, NOT ENCRYPTED), but I can't find any information about whether that's still true in 2012 R2.

I'd be grateful if someone could enlighten me about this.

Hi,

It seems my VSS is severely corrupted/damaged, somehow. When I attempt to do a backup with Windows Server of the system state, bare metal recovery, C: and part of D: drives, I get the following error:

As this includes a Hyper-V backup, the Hyper-V VSS Writer is activated. I am backing up to another partition on the physical HD of the host (VMs on another physical HDD). Error details are below:

The backup operation stopped before completing.
Detailed error: ERROR - A Volume Shadow Copy Service operation error has
occurred: (0x80042336)
The writer experienced a partial failure. Check the component level error state for more information.

Log of files successfully backed up:

Log of files for which backup failed:
C:\Windows\Logs\WindowsServerBackup\Backup_Error-03-05-2010_00-02-05.log

A Volume Shadow Copy Service operation failed. Please check "VSS" and "SPP" application event logs for more information.
ERROR - A Volume Shadow Copy Service operation error has
occurred: (0x80042336)
The writer experienced a partial failure. Check the component level error state for more information.

Although this is from another app (BackupAssist), they stated I should raise this issue to MS as they have no fix. I also had a similar problem with Windows Server Backup. When I do a backup of C:, partly D, bare metal and system state in Windows Server Backup, I get this error:

2147754806

0x80042336

The writer experienced a partial failure. Check the component level error state for more information.

The VSS service is running.

What's causing this error?

Thanks

Windows server 2012 R2 keeps deleting all previous backups

Hi,

I have read through for forum to see any previous posts that can apply to the problem I have. There are a few but none of those are answered with solution. If anyone knows the answer for fixing my backup problem below, I will send a million thanks :)

I have a Windows server 2012 R2 standard running as a file server. It has drives as below:

C drive: O/S

D drive: DVD rom

E drive: data. Shared folder. Users map to shared folder in E drive

F drive: Backups drive. Use it to backup the "E\share" folder

E drive has a folder called "share". This folder has about 2TB

F drive has 4.5TB. It's a set of raided drives, Raid 5 using Dell Powervault MD 1000

I'm using the built-in Windows server backup utility(wbadmin) to backup E\share to F drive. The problem is that the backup utility can only keep 1(one) backup file. The properties of F drive shows it has plenty of space. However, if I run 5 backups within one day, it does NOT delete previous backups. The problem is it delete all backups when next day the backup runs. Question is:

Why doesn't it delete other backups ran within the same day?

Why does it delete all backups on the next day it runs the backup?

It appears that it's not the hardware or F drive issues in my case. It's something with configuration or setting under Windows registry and it flags to delete all backups on the next day the wbadmin backup runs. I already formatted and re-installed Windows server 2012 on this machine and it does the same. Did anyone in here ever have this weir situation like this before? I also replaced all the drives in MD1000 to make a new F drive but the backup still does the same.  It's weirder than weird. I have spent my time for last 3 weeks but could not find a solution to fix this issue. Please help...

Backup VHD size is much more than expected and other backup related questions.

Hello,I have few windows 2008 server and i have scheduled the weekly backup (Windows Backup) which runs on saturday.
I recently noticed that the actual size of the data drive is only 30 GB but the weekly backup creates a VHD of 65 GB.This is not happening for all servers but for most of the server. Why is it so..and how can i get the correct VHD size..60 GB VHD does't make sence for 30 GB data.

2. If any moment of time if i have to restore entire Active Directory on windows 2008 R2 then is is the process same as windows 2003..means going to DSRM mode, restoring the backup, authoritative restore or is there any difference..

3. I also noticed that if i have a backup VHD of one server (Lets Say A) and if i copy that Backup to other server (Let Say B) then windows 2008 only gives me an option to attach the VHD to server B but through backup utlity is there any way to restore the data from the VHD,Currently i am doing copy paste from VHD to server B data drive but  that is not the correct way of doing it..Is it a limitation of windows 2008?

Volume shadow copies

Hi,

My server's hard disk partition (compressed NTFS) is of 1.5 TB and it has shared folders on it and Volume Shadow Copies were configured. for more than a year there has not been any problem with the shadow copies. But suddenly it stopped taking the Shadow copies. The data size is now half of the total space. I have freed some space by deleting four oldest shadow copies. still there is no solution. Actual space allocated for shadow copies is 120GB.

Every day, it is scheduled to run at 1:00PM. In the Event Viewer, I have these messages

1. At 1:00:55PM, The Volume Shadow Copy service entered the running state.

2. At 1:00:55PM, The Microsoft Software Shadow Copy Provider service entered the running state.

3. At 1:05:45PM, The Volume Shadow Copy service entered the stopped state.

4. At 1:05:45PM, The Microsoft Software Shadow Copy Provider service entered the stopped state.

But if I run the scheduled task, the task is running.

What could be the reason? Please suggest.

System State Backup return error 0x8078001d.

I've google a lot about these errors but nothing concerning Windows Server 2012.

VSS Writers does not show any errors (using vssadmi nlist writers)

No disk error anywhere in the event viewer.

I've also check the "JUNCTION" issue (mostly known in Win 7 and Win server 2008 r2) but none of them are "mounted drive" so ...

I'm really runing out of idea ...

EDIT :

No updates are applyed to the machine.

will try with updates ...

EDIT :

even with the last Windows updates, i keep get the same error

Windows Server 2012 R2 VM Back up fails with Insufficient storage available to create either the shadow copy storage file or other shadow copy data.

This problem was first encountered on an IBM x3650 in a cluster with an IBM x3550 for failover, however this problem is reproducible on a server running HyperV not part of a cluster.

When I try to run a VM based backup from inside the VM using the server backup utility to E: drive(which is an attached vhdx file). It fails with this error

Backup failed to complete. There is not enough disk space to create the volume shadow copy on the storage location. make sure that, for all volumes to be backup up, the minimum required disk space

for shadow copy creation is available. This applies to both the backup storage destination and volumes included in the backup. Minimum requirements: For Volume less than 500 megabytes, the minimum is 50 megabytes of free space. For volumes more than 500 megabytes, the minimum is 320 megabytes of free space. Recommended: At least 1 gigabyte of free disk space for each volume if the volume size is more than 1 gigabyte.

Detailed Error: Insufficient storage available to create either the shadow copy storage file or other shadow copy data.

In the event viewer I see this error

EventID: 521 The backup operation that started at '‎TIME’ has failed because the Volume Shadow Copy Service operation to create a shadow copy of the volumes being backed up failed with following error code '0x80780119'. Please review the event details for a solution, and then rerun the backup operation once the issue is resolved.

This problem was not happening in our test setup using Server 2012 R2 MSDN copy, before rolling out to production  using ourVolume license copy of server. So as a test I installed two VMs on a Host(MSDN), one VM using our MSDN copy of server and one with our  Volume license copy of server, very simple install, install Windows backup, attach VHDx file and attempt bare metal backup. The MSDN copy is able to perform the bare metal backup. TheVolume license copy fails with the above errors.

Has anyone else run into this problem? Or any ideas on where to look to see the differences between the two VMs that is stopping the backup from completing?

EDIT:

To trouble shoot and get it as simple as possible I tried a 3rd server with just hyperV installed, not part of the cluster. The VM that I install from our MSDN DVD(burned from ISO) the backups work fine. The VM I install from our Volume license copy DVD(burned ISO) fails the bare metal backup with the above

I have since verified this on two different servers, VM installed with MSDN copy of server 2012 R2 work for bare metal backups, VMs installed with purchased Volume license copies of Server 2012 R2 do not work for bare metal backups, another bit of info on the server that cant perform bare metal backups, its able to back up C: drive fine, its not until I hit bare metal back up that it fails.

I found this post which is similar to my problem I think, but when I tried his fix, and attempted to recover the VM the Windows PE System image recovery said it couldn't find a image to recover. http://superuser.com/questions/663782/windows-8-1-insufficient-storage-available-to-create-shadow-copy

Hi,

Since some time now i have not been able to use the Windows server backup tool anymore.

I cant really tell since when this started, but for all i know the windows server backup service worked fine.

I even created a backup schedule and it made some backups.

I am running this windows server 2012 Standard at home with just a couple of basic applications.

The server is used to host several websites with IIS, it manages my local DHCP and is used for locally shared storage.

There are no other security applications installed yet, because i am trieing to get rid of this error first. (so no symantec or whatever)

Since some time i am having trouble opening the windows backup snap-in.

When ever i trie to open the Windows server backup snap-in i get the following error:

A fatal error occurred during a Windows Server Backup snap-in (Wbadmin.msc) operation.

Error details: The Windows Server Backup service has stopped.

Close Wbadmin.msc and then restart it.

Whenever this error occures the folowing error is show in the windows logbook:

I tried to find simmilar cases over the internet but i cant seem to find a solution for the problem.

I already tried to remove and reinstall the Windows server backup feature, this did not help.

Is there anyone here that can help me find a solution for this problem ?

Thank you !

Windows Server 2012 R2 (Essentials) Backup - Compating Large Backup Volume Takes Hours

Is there any way to change the behaviour of Windows Server Backup (WSE2012R2) with regards Volume Compacting. When multiple (incremental) backups on disk, compacts the (largest) volume each time, taking hours - and being somewhat a disk resource hog.

Have a client backup volume which has around 2.2TB of data, as well as data and file history volumes with 800GB and 200GB of data. Backing up to a 6TB drive (which has around 2TB left free all of the time), but every time backup runs (daily) it compacts the 2.1TB backup of the client backups! This process takes hours to complete.

Ideally I would like to switch off compacting of this specific volume, or at least configure this to only happen say every "n" backups so that I could make this to happen maybe once a week.

Windows 7 / Server 2008 R2 Bare Metal Restore 0x0000007B Stop Error

Hi,

I am tring to restore a Server 2008 R2 Standard Ed (full installation) RTM to a virtual machine, from a full Windows Server Backup image taken of a physical machine (Dell PE 2970).  All restores fine, and looks good until it tries to boot, when a Stop Error occurs, with the following error:

*** STOP: 0x0000007B (0xFFFFF880009A9928, 0xFFFFFFFFC0000034, 0x0000000000000000, 0x0000000000000000)

I believe the non-bracketed portion means "INACCESSABLE_BOOT_DEVICE".

There is only the System Reserved volume + a C: volume (system volume) + F: volume (DVD drive) on the original server.  It has had other volumes in it before, which are correctly listed in the MountedDevices registry key, but they have not been physically present for a while.

The virtual disk I'm trying to restore to is several GBs larger than the original virtual disk on the RAID controller (2 disks in RAID 1).

I can't figure out why the server isn't booting.  I've successfully restored Server 2008 machines from physical machines to VMs before, including servers using hardware RAID cards (e.g. Dell SAS 6/iR).  The only difference I can think of is that this is Server 2008 R2, this is a 2 proc server (I've tried several virtual proc numbers on the VM to no avail), and the RAID controller is PERC 6/i, and this is the first server I've tried with that particular RAID card.

Any help would be greatly appreciated, even if it's to point out that I'm looking in the wrong direction.

Many thanks,

Chris

Windows Server Backup scheduled task run successfully but backup do not start (not running) on Windows Server 2012

Hi,

A backup job has been setup on Windows Server 2012 (Platform: Win32NT; ServicePack: ; Version: 6.2.9200.0; VersionString : Microsoft Windows NT 6.2.9200.0) via Windows Backup Software UI (Local Backup 1.0).

It is appearing as a scheduled task "\Microsoft\Windows\Backup\Microsoft-Windows-WindowsBackup" belonging to user 'nt authority\system' in task scheduler.

The problem is that the Backup job never start despite the scheduled task running and completing successfully (when run automatically or manually)!

Would you be able to explain why and assist in resolving that issue?

Here is what we know:

When the backup is run manually via the Windows Backup Software UI, it works fine.

When the backup is run via command line (as set in schedule task) in a cmd command prompt (as local/domain 'administrator' or as 'nt authority\system' which is possible by running command prompt via 'PsExec.exe -i -s cmd'), something like "%windir%\System32\wbadmin.exe start backup -templateId:{f11eb3aa-74e7-4ff4-a57b-d8d567ee3f77} -quiet", it works fine.

If you manually run the preset scheduled task while logged in as administrator, the task run and complete successfully but the backup job does not start.

Idem if you schedule task is run automatically at scheduled time.

The schedule task run and complete successfully but the backup job does not start.

It is confirmed by running the following in a command prompt as 'nt authority\system':

schtasks /run /tn "\Microsoft\Windows\Backup\Microsoft-Windows-WindowsBackup"
SUCCESS: Attempted to run the scheduled task "\Microsoft\Windows\Backup\Microsoft-Windows-WindowsBackup".

Despite success result, the Backup job does not start running...

No errors or warning appears anywhere in Event Logs (Microsoft > Windows > Backup or Task Scheduler) nor in the scheduled task History tab. The schedule task complete successfully but no Backup job is run...

If scheduled task automatically set by Windows Backup software is duplicated (copied) and set manually it runs fine as 'administrator' and as 'nt authority\system' (subject that 'nt authority\system' is added to the 'Backup Operators' AD group).

Here is an export of the current pre-set schedule task, is there any settings that need to be changed to make it works?
