Backup Fails after several successful days - errors "Device is not ready" & "The System cannot find the path specified"

Well I am back again, with another backup issue. After fixing one issue with the backup failing after a reboot, I have encountered another which is starting to cause me a lot of headaches.

The setup is thus - the backups run on a host machine running Windows Server 2012, this hosts three VM's (1x Server 2012 and 2x2008 Since the 19th of December a single backup drive has been attached for the backups (not ideal but the company had closed for the holidays) up until the 26th these backups were working flawlessly.

On the 26th the backup completed with warnings, transferring a good 90% of the data to the backup (2/3 VMs). On the 27th it transferred a bit more at around 95% (2/3 VMs).  On the 28th, it didn't completely backup a single VM.

On the 28th this error appeared in the event logs and after checking in the snap-in the same errors appear on the warning days as the errored day.

---------------------

The backup operation that started at '‎2014‎-‎12‎-‎28T20:30:09.774946400Z' has failed with following error code '0x80780049' (None of the items included in backup were backed up.). Please review the event details for a solution, and then rerun the backup operation once the issue is resolved.

Thanks in advance/

Ugh: Error [0x800700a1] The specified path is invalid.

I'm having the following problem. Our backups are failing with the following error:

In the backup logs, I find:

Error in backup of D:\ during write: Error [0x800700a1] The specified path is invalid.
Error in backup of D:\Perforce\ during write: Error [0x800700a1] The specified path is invalid.
Error in backup of D:\Perforce\Database\ during write: Error [0x800700a1] The specified path is invalid.
Error in backup of D:\Perforce\Database\p4s.exe during write: Error [0x800700a1] The specified path is invalid.

In the event viewer, I find:

The backup operation that started at '?2010?-?05?-?24T21:51:56.331072200Z' has failed with following error code '2155347997' (The operation ended before completion.). Please review the event details for a solution, and then rerun the backup operation once the issue is resolved.

And on the command line, wbadmin returns:

...
Found (41) files.
The backup operation stopped before completing.
Summary of the backup operation:
------------------
The backup operation stopped before completing.
Detailed error: Element not found.

C:\Windows\Logs\WindowsServerBackup\Backup_Error-24-05-2010_14-51-56.log

The operation ended before completion.

ERROR(-3): Backup failed!

This is very frustrating. The more I use Windows built-in backup the more fragile it seems to be. The D drive is a local drive and the path is valid.  Running check disk finds no problems.  The drive is mostly empty. I tried with and without the anti-virus software, same problem.  There are no other server errors to indicate a problem with the drive or the path. I ran vssadmin list writers, and none of them returned any errors.  Why would the backup return an invalid path error, for a path that is valid? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks much,
James.

The creation of the shadow copy on the backup destination has failed. Detailed Error: The Volume Shadow Copy operation failed with the error 0x80042316

When using Microsoft Backup on a Windows Server 2008 SP2 (not R2 - [Microsoft version 6.0.6002]) I get the error "The creation of the shadow copy on the backup destination has failed. Detailed Error: The Volume Shadow Copy operation failed with the error 0x80042316"

The odd thing is that when I start the backup manually, it works fine. When  it runs automatically the error appears.

When doing a SFC /scannow I do get errors that can't be corrected.

Is there anything short of rebuilding this machine (It's a DC and the only one this office has) I can do to fix this?

WS2012R2Essentials Reboot causes Server Backup Hang at Storage Spaces Drive

I am storing 7 Client and System backups on a standalone Windows Server 2012 R2 Essentials Server OPS in the LAN. All works well until I have to reboot the Server, then the Server backups hang and fail when the Storage Spaces Drive tries to do it's backup at 66%. To fix this failure, I have to stop the server backup and disable the Server backup settings to my External USB Drive, then re-setup the Server backup settings, then re-start the Server System backups to get it to run the Server backups to completion. This forces a completely new and long backup sequence. Can anyone instruct me on how to prevent this redo of the complete backup sequence every time I have to reboot the Server and make all backups run normally again? - - - Thanks Shorto

I can't refresh or reset my laptop (ASUS K55VD) running on Windows 8.1

I can't repair my laptop.

I already tried refreshing or resetting my laptop from the recovery portion of PC Settings in Windows.

When I try to refresh my laptop, the following error message comes up: "can't refresh your PC. the drive is locked."

when I try to reset my laptop, this message shows: "can't reset your PC. a required partition is missing."

I don't have a recovery disc or any windows installer. Please help, I really need my PC to be working before this year ends.

On another hand, can I still activate my windows properly if I used an outside source for the installer?

Hoping for a fast and favorable response.

Windows System State Backup - Windows Server 2008 R2 Std SP1.

HI,

I want to schedule two System state backups of the same AD Server on two different Network shared folders residing on different servers.

Scenarios will be as below:

Need to configure System State backup on AD with name ABC

1. First Backup Schedule on ABC will start at 03:00 hrs on N/W share \\target1

2. Sceond Backup Schedule on ABC  will start at 05:00 hrs on N/W Share \\target2

I tried configuring & scheduling one with GUI & other with wbadmin command line, & though I could see both schedules in task schedular but theone which is configured the last only works on respective \\target*

Eventhough ran the other non-funtional schedule task manually the same last configured schedule gets backed up.

Anybody has idea for configuring the same.

Windows Server Backup 2008 - "auto-delete" function not working

We setup full scheduled backups and they seem to be working OK for a while, but now that the backup drive is full, older backups are not being deleted and backups are failing.

We were getting below errors for a while
(EventID:51) Backup target is running low on free space. Future backups to this target may fail for want of enough space.

Then started getting below errors
(EventID:50) Backup failed as required space was not available on the backup target.
(EventID:7) Backup started at '1/2/2009 8:05:39 PM' failed with following error code 2155348010.

We have some servers running on Windows 2008 server Hyper-V guests on Windows 2008 server standard hosts and we are experiencing this problem on more than one servers.
We do:
 - Full Server backup (Backup size:78.94GB)
 - Backup destination: 300GB iSCISI connected disk
 - Backup was scheduled using Windows Server Backup UI
 - "Always perform full backup" is selected
 - We don't run any other backup program on this server
 - This issue is happening on Windows 2008 server Hyper-V guests

Is there anyway to fix this issue?

Thanks,
Noriko

Backup Fails With Error Code "2155348010"

Hello,

I am attempting to complete a backup on a W2K8 STD server to an external USB drive. The devices are 120GB Samsung S1 Minis. I cannot complete either on-demand or scheduled backups to these devices. When I attempt a backup an error is almost immediately generated and the backup stops.

The error displayed in WSB is:

"One of the backup files could not be created. Detailed Error: The request could not be performed because of an I/O device error"

A System event log error is also generated:

How to Delete Non-System State Backups in Windows 2008R2

Hello,

I am running a Windows 2008R2 server which uses Windows Server Backup to do the backups. We are using the backup-tool to create non-system state backups of the data-directories on this machine. The backup is done on a dedicated disk connected through iscsi (to a Synology box). This backup disk has become too small and we have now replaced the Synology box with a bigger one. Here i created a new LUN again for the backup purposes.

Now for my question; The wbadmin.exe tool supplied with W2008R2 does not offer a way to delete the old backups. I know that in Win2012 (which we we also have running) I could add the new iscsi location and then (when enough backups are available on the new target) use wbadmin.exe delete backup  to delete the old non-system state backups; e.g.

 wbadmin delete backup -version:08/07/2013-21:00

This (very undocumented) feature of Windows 2012 and higher works quite nice and is exactly what i am searching for on the W2008R2 machine; a way to delete the old backups (and under the hood delete the corresponding snapshots)

I've done quite a bit of research and it should be possible to do something similar in 2008 but then manually, The howto is described in the following link: http://blogs.technet.com/b/filecab/archive/2009/06/22/backup-version-and-space-management-in-windows-server-backup.aspx . Basically it describes that you should use DiskShadow.exe to remove e.g. the oldest snapshot with a  command like :

Delete shadows OLDEST \\?\Volume{7fc1871b-2e1f-11dd-a339-001e4fb7af35}

Windows Server backup (wbadmin) should then on the next run 'see' this deletion and update its list of available backups:

"You can perform the same steps manually to delete backups on demand. However, the backup catalog update cannot be done manually and it will happen instead during the next backup."

I've done this on our box and it indeed removes the shadows from the list. However, in the Windows Backup 'dashboard' it still lists the backups as available. Also after a new backup has finished (according the the article this is when it should 'update' its backup catalog). When I try to restore a backup from a date that i just removed it gives a nice message that this is impossible because the snapshot is not available (duh :)) ;

Unable to browse Local disk. The shadow copy of the backup stored on the backup destination cannot be found.

So it seems that the aforementioned method works; it removes the snapshot and frees diskspace, but it doesn't update the Windows Backup catalog. As a result the management tool (GUI) still lists the backups which are no longer available! How can i change this? Is there any way to do this? I found one article which mentions that the Dashboard bases its screen on the Windows Logs and not on the actual VSS snapshots available: http://forum.wegotserved.com/index.php/topic/23757-start-afresh-with-server-backup/ (WHS) In my situation however this seems unlikely because i don't have any logs that date back as far as my backups go.

In my opinion this is a real bug and it leaves us with a in-consequent backup schema. Does anyone have similar situations or even a solution to my problem?

Kind Regard, Martin

Rebooting a domain controller!

Hello,

If i reboot a domain controller (given the fact i have multiple DCs in my domain), will that cause an issue for users when they are logging in?
Does this depend on the what operations master role DC has?

Thanks

rotating backup log files

I noticed that windows server 2008 has the same event channel as windows server 2012

Microsoft-Windows-Backup

with Event/EventData/<Data Name="BackupSuccessLogPath">

however these log files only seems to get populated (with corresponding log file under C:\windows\logs\windowsserverbackup\Backup-DD-MM-YYY_HH-MM-SS.log) when running backup once (well at least the ones that I've specified and selected files to backup manually)

but there is no log file generated for scheduled backups.

why is this the case.

by the way, this works fine in windows server 2012.

Server Backup errors on Hyper-V R2

Hello,

I posted this issue in Hyper-V because the backup problems seems to be related to it, but did not get any feedback:

We are using a Hyper-V R2 server. There are several Servers (2008 [R2]) on the host running SQL (express), Exchange, DC, etc...
Hyper-V VSS service is registered (as described http://support.microsoft.com/kb/958662/en-us)

When we are using the built-in Windows server backup (WSB), shortly after starting, two different errors are logged several times (with different SIDs and volume IDs as shown)

Error1 (Source volsnap, Event ID 27)
"The shadow copies of volume \\?\Volume{ba882ffb-e66e-11de-8f15-001517cf3032} were aborted during detection because a critical control file could not be opened."

Error2 (Source FilterManager, Event ID 3)
"Filter Manager failed to attach to volume '\Device\HarddiskVolume126'. This volume will be unavailable for filtering until a reboot. The final status was 0xc03a001c."

These errors do not appear when I shut down the guests before starting the backup.

The backup runs and finishes without claiming any error on the host (except the logged ones). Also there are no errors on the guest machines during the time frame of the backup. However, on one VM a couple of errors occured: ("VDS Basic Provider", Event ID 1, Unexpected failure. Error code: 490@01010004) but the did not reappear after a chkdsk operation.

The volume IDs shown in the errors are NOT from local drives (I checked this) so they must be from the VHDs, but I do not know how to get the information which ID is assigned to which VHD.

I am not sure if the backups are running normal and safe due to this error, so I need help on this to solve the issues.

Thanks for any hint,
Rainer

I even created a complete backup of my server and restore it back, that didn't even work.

Please Help!!!

Windows Server 2012 R2 (Essentials) Backup - Compating Large Backup Volume Takes Hours

Is there any way to change the behaviour of Windows Server Backup (WSE2012R2) with regards Volume Compacting. When multiple (incremental) backups on disk, compacts the (largest) volume each time, taking hours - and being somewhat a disk resource hog.

Have a client backup volume which has around 2.2TB of data, as well as data and file history volumes with 800GB and 200GB of data. Backing up to a 6TB drive (which has around 2TB left free all of the time), but every time backup runs (daily) it compacts the 2.1TB backup of the client backups! This process takes hours to complete.

Ideally I would like to switch off compacting of this specific volume, or at least configure this to only happen say every "n" backups so that I could make this to happen maybe once a week.

Windows Backup Retention: Server 2012 R2 Essentials

Hi,

We are backing up a Server 2012 R2 Essentials machine's files and folders, using Windows Server Backup, to an external hard drive. That backup drive is now 84% full. It is my understanding that Windows Server Backup will automatically delete old backups when necessary, but does anybody know at what point that happens? When the target reaches 90%?

Thanks.

Windows SRV 2012 STD Backup error - Backup of volume \\?\Volume{fda1d5eb-5ded-11e3-93e7-806e6f6e6963}\ has failed. Incorrect function.

Hello folks,

please can anybody give me advise?

I am running two Dell servers with Windows SRV 2012 STD, I am able to backup server on Synology RS 812 without any issue but I am unable to backup servers on WD MyCloud 2TB.

Errors are follow:

There was a failure in preparing the backup image of one of the volumes in the backup set.
 Detailed error: Incorrect function

The backup operation that started at '‎2014‎-‎11‎-‎30T17:39:53.657001600Z' has failed with following error code '0x807800C5' (There was a failure in preparing the backup image of one of the volumes in the backup set.). Please review the event details for a solution, and then rerun the backup operation once the issue is resolved.

I tried lot of resolution I found on the interent - SMB2 and 3 disabling, make shared folder public, run backup with and without NAS credentials and so on.
