Can Windows Server Backup spread a single backup job across multiple disks if they are not set up as a virtual disk?

This may be a dumb question, but I can't seem to find any definitive information after having done many, many searches.  Short question is - can Windows Server Backup spread a single backup job across multiple disks if they are not in a storage pool or some other RAID/JBOD structure?

Background:

I'm running Server 2012 Essentials with all Windows Updates installed.  I have been backing up approx 2.8TB of data (Bare Metal Recovery, C:, S: (shared folders), and system reserved) for the past year+ onto a storage pool made up of two-2TB external USB drives.  Backup is slow (takes approx 1.5 days to complete), but generally works.  Not surprisingly I was constantly getting capacity low messages so I decided to increase my backup storage pool by adding a 3TB drive and another spare 750GB drive for a total of 7.75TB.  Instead of having four separate external USB enclosures, I bot a 4-bay enclosure - Startech.com model #S3540BU33E to simplify this (or so I thought!).

The first problem I had was adding the two new drives to the existing storage pool. I think that is because the Startech uses a JMicron USB controller that reports identical uniqueid's for all drives so only one shows up in the GUI interface for creating storage pools. After doing research on this, I set up a new storage pool and virtual disk using all four drives via Powershell and thought I was good. However, when the backup ran, it failed after filling the first drive, saying there was no remaining capacity. In reality there were three remaining empty drives and there storage pool reported almost 5TB of avail capacity. I assumed this was due to the identical uniqueid issue so I decided to try a different tactic.

Instead of using a storage pool that combines all four disks into one virtual disk, I just added each of them to Windows Server Backup as individual drives thinking it would manage them collectively. I.e., when a drive filled up during a particular backup, it would just start using the next drive and so on. Apparently this was a foolish assumption because the backup failed again as soon as the first disk filled up.

So now I don't know if this is still an issue with the identical uniqueid's or if Server Backup actually can't spread a single backup across multiple individual drives that aren't in a pool or other virtual disk implementation. Hence, my original question.

My guess is that it does *not* spread them across individual disks, but I just wanted to get confirmation.

Thanks

Large number VSS errors "The specified network resource or device is no longer available."

I have a 2 node Hyper V Cluster backed up via Veeam Off-Host Proxy. I've already logged, without answer, a thread about the Off-Host Proxy server randomly (I guess) creating new duplicate iSCSI connections.

Today I have a single VM that won't backup. On inspection through the hosting servers Application Log I see a high amount of VSS errors being logged which I believe is possibly related to the iSCSI issue being logged by the SAN.

I'm not sure how to "show" the issue without a giant wall of the events but there is like half a dozen different events being logged when whatever this is is happening. For instance as well last night 60/61 VMs backed up find, but these errors were logged constantly while the backup ran...

The question as well is is this a Windows/VSS issue, a Veeam issue or a Equallogic issue?

Also how do I find what '\\?\Volume{06fba49e-9519-11e4-80cc-000af75dc050}\'. actually is?

In order of how they come I guess:

Dear Support,

Shadows are configured to create on Mon to Fri every week. Once a spell is over from Monday to Friday, they are not created from next Monday. Am I doing anything wrong? The exact time to start the Shadow copies is at 9:00PM from Monday to Friday.

In the Event Viewer, I do not identify any trace of error related to VSS, MS Software provider service as well as DCOM services. But at the same time, Service Control Manager has reported in the Event Viewer that the Windows Modules Installer service entered the running state.

Please suggest if any solution is noticed.

DPM 2012 has run out of disk space

Hi,

I'm relatively new to DPM and have run into a problem.  It appears that the DPM server has run out of disk space and has the following error:

DPM has run out of free space on the recovery point volume and will fail synchronization for H:\ on SRVFS02.FILECLUSTER.osfc.ac.uk in order to prevent existing recovery points from being deleted. (ID 30195 Details: Internal error code: 0x80990AB2)

Is there a way of freeing up some disk.  It appears that it allocated space which has run out but the disk space is fine.

Any help would be very much appreciated.

Problem with partion resulting in "One of the source volumes specified has an invalid format and cannot be protected using Windows Backup. Only volumes formatted with NTFS/ReFS can be protected."

We have two new Windows Servers 2012 R2 that I'm trying to set backups on using a script. When I used the -allCritical switch, I get the error specified in the subject. When I look at the partition information using diskpart, I see a 2048 MB partition with no drive letter labeled as System that is FAT32. I was never prompted to my recollection of what file system to format the partition with. Is it safe to assign this partition a letter, convert to NTFS, and then remove the drive letter?

Thanks

Windows Server Backup fail

Hi,

I had config a Windows Server Backup, however it was fail in every backup time. in Event Log, shown the error code  '2155348010' (cannot create a backup file.). I had search this error code on Google, said that the backup destination drive cannot other than 512 sector size. And I checked the drive is 4098 physical sector size. How can I format it as 512 sector size or 512e??? I tried using command 'format x: /a:512', but it say cannot format the drive. Since, the sector size specific is too large. Any method able to format my drive to 512e?

My drive is Seagage Expansion Desktop 3TB Model:SRD00F2

Many Thanks

Hey, i've got a file server running, every user got it's own storage. Is it possible to make a backup of this disk to different location without VSS?

It's just needed because what if an user deletes a very important file accidently... then he needs the IT group to be able to recover it. Not himself. that's what i had in mind.

Thanks.

Need you bright minds since I can not get any future.
I'm about to set up my WDS server for windows 7 deployment/capture
I can not test the capture step since I can not get through the final steps to add NIC driver for Realtek LAN at a Shuttle Slim PC XH81V  amd DS437 with an Realtek 8111G
But get the error:
windows deployment services could not add some of the packages to the server
Details say that typicial issue could be unsigned driver etc.

The drivres It look okay and signed, so I really have no idea of what's the issue

suspect a bad download or corrupt unpacked file archive.
I have tried to download both from the shuttle as well as directly from Realtek, extracted with 7zip. same result.
The driver:
LAN_REALTEK_RTL8111G_W7-64_W7-32

Any idea on how a can get it proceed, or something I've overlooked in WDS?

Tried to insert link and photo in this tred. but got the message:
ody text cannot contain images or links until we are able to verify your account.
Maybe a can ad it later when verifyed

Restoring to Different Hardware

I read somewhere that a Windows Backup on Server 2012 R2 could restore a system image on dissimilar hardware, however, I can't find any indication in the backup program of how to do that.  I haven't had to at this point, but unfortunately it could happen that after a disaster, I wouldn't be able to replace my server with the exact same hardware.

Can anyone tell me if what I read is true, and if so, how is it done?

wbadmin backup fails on server 2012 std , reporting Drive Cannot Find the Sector Requested

I've recently installed two 2012 servers on HP ML350p Gen8.

Both giving the same error while trying to backup (system state , BMR and c:) , "the drive cannot find the sector requested".

What i already tried (without result):

* increase the system volume bij 1MB or 10MB ,since this seems to be a common fix for this issue-> giving me a "Parameter Error"

*removing /adding the multiple disks again via wbadmin enable backup -addtarget:[id]

*formatting the disks.

*removing the backup schedule and re-apply a new one

*chkdsk run on all disks

Can somebody advice a solution / cause for this behaviour? Below the error description.

Thx in advance!

Windows 2008 R2 Sp1 backup failing with Event Id 517 and Error Code: 2147942487

We have a windows share that we dump multiple windows backup images from our servers.   We have 1 server consistently failing when performing a manual "Backup Once...." operation.

The error message in the Windows Backup gui is: "Failed The parameter is incorrect"

The event log shows an error of 517 with the message: "

The backup operation that started at '‎2015‎-‎01‎-‎12T14:25:20.681861800Z' has failed with following error code '2147942487' (One or more arguments are invalid). Please review the event details for a solution, and then rerun the backup operation once the issue is resolved.

"

The strange part is when we choose a different location to accept the backup we have success.  The backup starts, but fails between 1-6 GB transferred.

Any assistance would be appreciated.

Hello guys,

I made a windows 2012 Data center R2 server for my business. I installed the OS on a 250GB HDD. Because of reliability issue I bought a new WD 1TB HDD. I want to Mirror my 250GB HDD to the new 1 TB HDD.
I tried to mirror the HDD using disc management by converting Basic to dynamic drive. But coz of the size differents I am not able to mirror the HDD now.
Can some one please help me fix this...
I even created a complete backup of my server and restore it back, that didn't even work.

Please Help!!!

Thanks,

Emmanual
